Arcane Was Good. Its Characters Weren't.

Even though the whole series was pretty good, Netflix' new show, "Arcane" features very few truly heroic characters. Most of the people we're supposed to root for are thieves, murderers, and corrupt politicians.
Is anyone else hoping that Season 2 will bring us some actual good guys?
Stay tuned for a bigger discussion of Arcane on the next episode of Out of Frame coming out this Thursday!

@@miphatitou8824 that your "ratioed" comment is wrong? Of course... Even if the video did have more dislikes than likes, I wouldn't particularly care. Most of the negativity in the comments here has come from people who have imagined arguments or claims I didn't actually make. I stand by what I said in both videos. Arcane was a good, well-written show. Most of (not all) its characters are bad people who do bad things to others, regardless of whether or not they believe they're right. Regularly robbing random people isn't morally OK just because you're poor... Amassing power and using it in corrupt ways isn't noble because you started with idealistic goals... And you don't become a hero by not doing stuff you shouldn't have done to begin with. You just go from bad to neutral. Yes, I get it, the show created a world where no one is ever really good and the villains are sympathetic. That's why I said it was a good show. Not the greatest of all time, but better-written than I expected. However... in my *opinion* ... dark, depressing tropes about how no one is truly good or bad, and how people justify doing awful things to each other in a cruel, depressing world is getting to be played out. TV is filled with this kind of message (ie. Game of Thrones, Ozark, Black Mirror, Handmaid's Tale, Westworld, Peaky Blinders, and on and on), and... again, in my *opinion* ... it's getting old. As a result, I'd like to see some more genuinely heroic characters and maybe a less depressing take on humanity emerge in Season 2. This does *not* mean I want to see less complex characters, Mary Sues, or one-dimensional "black and white" storytelling. The same level of narrative development that goes into telling a story that presents everyone as dark and awful can be used to showcase better people who struggle less with recognizing the difference between right and wrong and more with the consequences of taking the harder, less expedient path. If you know you could get what you want by hurting someone and taking their stuff, but understand that it is wrong to do that, your challenge becomes getting what you want via moral means. There is a lot of good drama to be mined there if a writer were so inclined. That may not happen, of course. Such is life. But speaking as someone who's getting tired of shows that treat bad people as if they're heroes - and especially speaking as someone who has now read through dozens of comments from people who claim that morality is relative and universal standards of good and bad behavior "don't exist" - I'll stick with what I said.

Well-executed concepts to me, are better than original concepts that aren't well-executed (though if you can do both that's better).

@@FEEonline TL;DR: I pretty much agree with you that the characters in Arcane are not good people. I feel like I should stick up for you a bit here, even if you don't need it, because I don't like seeing people yelled at for sharing their opinions. I don't really see the characters as good or bad, but I can understand the argument for both sides. In your video, I think the point you made was that the kids don't really seem to care how they affect others, so long as they can survive. I don't think that kind of behavior is productive. You listed a lot of characters that, I agree with you here, make some really bad choices. The only thing I'd change about what you said in your video is that I don't find it difficult to root for these characters. I may not understand or agree with the decisions they make, but I do feel like a lot of the characters are trying to do good. A lot of the crimes the kids commit is because they want to earn their keep, in a sense. That's something that I can admire in them, even if I think there's better ways of doing it. This is a very delicate definition of morality for me, though, because I don't believe that the end always justifies the means. Just to conclude, I think you made some very good points, and I agreed with a lot of them. To what you said about having more morally aligned characters, I think Caitlyn is a pretty good example of that, though she can be a little impulsive as well. I think this is just human nature, though. Most of the characters in Arcane are not good people. There's no real way around that. I admire you for recognizing that, and I also hope we can see a little less selfishness in season 2 between the characters, now that some of them kind of have something to lean on and no longer need to prove their worth.

If they were breaking the law by say: Smuggling and selling necessities in a non-commercial district, or practicing medicine without a license in a community that had no doctors, that would be an example of breaking the law for the good of the community. Arguably, I believe that all of this characters are extremely well written. They are not "bad" because that is supposed to be the shows premise, they are bad because of the way they grew up. Vi and Powder's parents are dead, and they are forced to steal in order to keep themselves alive. Even though these characters grew up from a similar background, they all have extremely diverse personalities. And no, some of the characters ARE good. They are just FLAWED which shows a well developed character. Also this video focused on them while they are children, which only lasted three episodes.

Yep, definitely arguable. The show is pretty shallow. I can get that people who are having the revelation for the first time that life isn't pretty and people are 3 dimensional would love this show (it does look beautiful) but they just fck up some basic writing rules and throws away nuance for the sake of having a conflict, and then having those conflicts shrugged off. Like having Jinx roll her eyes at learning her adoptive dad did bad things. Like Marvel-levels of humour. I don't know. If you enjoyed it and learned some things from it, good for you. I personally didn't. And seeing the worship-levels here just rubs me the wrong way. It's NOT a perfect show.

Nope. They're all really good characters with heavy characterization. The main thing why Arcane stands out (at least for me) is because EVERYONE is morally grey, everyone is shaped by their environment in their own ways. They're selfish and do things according to their beliefs. And yes, we don't resonate with their thought processes a lot of times. I feel it's a breath of fresh air because the protagonist is not necessarily nice and the villain is not necessarily bad. Everyone are right in their own perspectives. It's just their compulsions in life that made them who they are and i feel it's the most interesting thing ever because we usually don't see so many characters with such good backstories & characterization at such alarming numbers.

Yeah, their argument bothers me. Like it makes no room for morality brought out of circumstance or how surviving is often more important to people than being polite and not stealing from rich folk. And how they immediately call the kids, “horrible people” as if moral ambiguity doesn’t exist. As if survival takes into account the input of others who are thriving and haven’t had to survive the same way for a day in their life. It comes off as lacking in empathy.

"These kids are THIEVES!!" Because they're starving hungry children who are forced to steal to survive. Did you not see the look on powders face when she found that sandwich? That kid was prolly gonna go hungry without it. Edit: To address the people claiming that the kids shouldn't be going hungry because Vander has a stable job in a bar that's always full... while Vander might have a relatively stable income as there will always be alcoholics in the undercity, the rest of the undercity is still dirt poor with little to no access to actual assets, such as an education, quality food, or doctors. Even if VANDER PERSONALLY has a bit of money socked away, he is still living in an extremely poor society with very very sparse access to resources to support him and his kids. He might have the money to pay for a doctor but do you think there would be a decent doctor anywhere in the undercity anyways? Regarding food, it's very reasonable to assume that food would be scarce as well in the undercity. The costs of transporting, managing and keep large quantities of food fresh to support all those people are overwhelming and likely not something the economy in the undercity is able to support. With all that factored in, let's not forget that Vander has 5 kids. Even in our society, it's crazy to expect a single dad to support 5 kids working at a bar. The problem here isn't Vanders personal finances, the problem is the society he lives in and what he has access to.

Bro literally nobody is “with you”. The whole idea of arcane is terrible people and good people are both people. They’ve been humanized and CHARACTERIZED. Not every show has to make every character an op anime protagonist. Vi is human and reacted harshly towards powder because she LOST HER WHOLE FAMILY WHEN SHE WAS A TEENAGER. Even then, she was immediate in turning back to save her sister. Powders theme is “no matter how hard you try sometimes it’s not good enough” and where were u during episode three when the kids were risking their lives to save their father? I get Jayce is not too likeable, but it’s supposed to be that way. Climbing through the ranks into corruption. Plus Caitlyn and Viktor are the sweetest characters. You clearly did NOT watch the show, you slept through all the good character moments.

It's almost like the expectation is that rough orphan kids in the slums are "bad" because their choices are "loot food" or "starve." Honestly I love Vi and Jinx. Does Vi love fighting? Sure, maybe that's not "good-gal" in itself, but she learned to enjoy being the best to defend herself and her family, because she grew up in constant violence. We all want a big sister like Vi. And Powder is like any of us: She just wants to be helpful and loved and appreciated. Jinx is just that same child who snapped and found that false appreciation and love with a bad influence. How many of us have realized we followed the wrong parent figure or mentor who was bad for us all along? How often have we seen best friends in abusive manipulative relationships? This show CLEARLY isn't a "horrible people doing horrible things to each other" fest like typical Showtime/HBO/Starz faire. Heck I'm still rooting for Jinx. Like damn she's done some awful stuff but that's why it's compelling : I will watch 15 seasons to see her forgiven! @@soup331emd5 he didn't tell Victor to go die. He was trying to get him to accept that sometimes there are things that can't be changed no matter how talented, persistent, or good we are. It's something he's had to cope with for centuries watching good peoples lives begin and end countless times despite his own best efforts. Granted this perspective was an unreasonable one for Heimer to expect from Victor considering his own limited perspective but that doesn't make what he said any less true.

@@X23Natalie I agree with you on Heimerdinger, but he did mistakes too. Because he is a magical being who's basically immortal, he isn't tied to anything related to time, he has no concept of time. Him telling Jayce and Viktor to wait 10 whole years labouring themselves just to make Hextech safe is just rude and probably sounded condescending to Jayce and Viktor, who one is literally dying and both are the geniuses who made a Scientific Breakthrough that can change their city forever. Though Heimer has a very valid reason to say that, saying that to Jayce and Viktor who are humans and Him not explaining it properly to them are his fatal flaw. (Telling them "Magic is not safe, trust me bro" is not gonna cut it)

He was kicked out? Heimerdingers story arc was about being _too old to understand suffering._ he, while incredibly kind, was unselfaware and willing to _let viktor die_ before he ever got to see the fruits of his labor. He had time, humans dont. He is removed from the council, _voted out_ because of his lack of awareness to human life. He didn't choose to leave. *he had a flaw, that jayce recognized and removed him for.* This doesn't make him bad. This doesn't make jayce good. It simply enunciates how nuanced every character in this show is.

@D. Va Im not saying its rude for us viewers, Im saying Heimerdinger telling Jayce and Viktor that, came out rude to them because Heimer doesn't consider that they're humans that die for a very short amount of time (Viktor is literally dying because he's sick, so that's a additional factor). I will admit yeah Jayce and Viktor are literally building weapons for war but, all of the characters in this show are not flawless, they make mistakes but those mistakes align with their ideology and POV in life and that's what makes them great characters.

Yes, but even so she has her prejudices against people from the Undercity. She's progressing but she's still viewing the progress of the Undercity from the viewpoint of a privileged enforcer. The great thing about arcane is that the characters mean well, but they're actually neutral as theur perspectives make them villains in the eyes of other people.

@@angelopouIos I think she's definitely alot better at that as of where she is in the show. At this point, I think she just has very strong emotions about how the undercity has been treated and wants to do justice for both sides. She grew up I a privileged place, but she's done a good job tearing those mindsets down and viewing everyone equally, humanity wise.

The part with the kids tho, they're living in poverty and dying. They have to steal to survive. You can see it as a criticism of their surroundings and the circumstances they live in. Stealing for the sake of it is bad. Stealing because they need the money, is okay because they need it to survive. Also, Powder was like 7. Any 7 year old would play with a shiny thing they found

@@nickawp8909 exactly. That's my main problem with this video. If you want characters who are good all the time, watch a Disney movie. I like how the characters are complex and you can't say any of them are good or evil. If you refuse to see the motivations, then you're going to look at it through a black and white way. That's what I enjoy about the show.
