Arcam AVR 850 Dirac Live Setup Guide - High End AV Home Cinema Receiver

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to Pursuit Perfect Systems Setup and Dirac Live Guide for the Arcam AVR 850 AV Receiver.
www.arcam.co.uk/products,av-re...
In this video I talk and show you how I setup this excellent AV Receiver to get the best out of Dirac Live. I show you a simple method to get a very Cohesive overall sound stage from all your speakers and subs and I talk you through a few quirks.
I also talk you through the Firmware update process for the AVR 850
I strongly advise that you invest in a UMIK 1 microphone as its by far the best solution for Dirac Live and this Arcam warrants the best

Great video....I would have struggled to do this without your guidance.....thank you very much. I did struggle with the bi-wiring of my L&R speakers. When I got my graphs my main speakers were dropping off at a high frequency, but once I’d figure out that I had to add them as part of the surround everything was perfect. Excellent work.

I'm curious how the Arcam 850/30+ would compare with the new Nad T 778? I hear the 778 has a Sabre chip like the 30. But in terms of amplification, I assume the 850 and up from Arcam might be better?

Hi, Thanks for the instructions which are very helpful. Just one question though. After linking the speakers and optimising to get one target curve you unlink and then roll off the bass of each speaker to suite it's frequency measurement. You say this is really for insurance so is it that the crossover you set should actually ensure the speakers are not being asked to do too much ? In other words is simply setting a sufficiently high crossover enough with no real need to go back in and roll off each speakers bass?

Hello Pursuit Perfect, just an amazing video and a big help, in fact Arcam video is not that detail or effective as compared to yours.I need your advise and help;Equipment I am using;Oppo 203, AVR 850, Dynaudio emit 30 front left and right, center B&W LCR 600 S3, rear definitive technology di polar SR9040and rear back def Mythos gem.Hope my speaker set up is good, Yes I have to look into center to match the left and right. Great job done and I will share your video with Arcam to learn something from you. Key part I learnt was put all the Direct measurement in one front and left speakers and then optimize, once done separate each speaker individually. Very good coherent sound all around, that is amazing. I have few question please help me;1. Measurement does not seems to be very accurate, should I measure in feet and convert to MS? each speaker?2, I like little louder sound from back, how should I keep the over all volume level of all speakers. 7.1 including back and front.3. Do you recommend anything else to make it better for movies and music?4. what Hz reading should I keep.5. I don't have any fancy place its a living roomPlease below picture to have a better understanding. I will put in another post.Thank you in advance

Jack Ryder I think the latest firmware for the AVR is the 1.7... as far as Dirac goes use the 2.4.1 version instead of the one that it’s on the Arcam website. Make sure you are hardwire into the router from your laptop. Don’t rely on the WIFI. But as far as doing your measurements it basically the same as the video shown.

Pursuit Perfect System, thanks for your feedback. I think your Dirac setup guide is absolutely perfect and thank you for that. I was always set the input gain as described on the description in the right corner. The message is: 1. Always start with input gain at its HIGHEST setting, and output volume at it’s LOWEST setting. 3. Gradually move the Input gain down until the background noise level is just below the -24dB mark on the Level meters. (If the noise level remains below the -24dB, even when the input gain is set at its highest, then just leave it set there) I’m a little confused about that.

Kiиg Becković! Maybe thats the best advice for using the included microphone with the arcam. Maybe the input on it is very low. To me it makes no sense to overload the input above 0db if you dont need to. To me 0db is the highest level

Pursuit Perfect System. Hmm...but if you open Output&Levels for the first time, your Input Gain is factory set at +20. And on your video I can see clearly that the level meter is just fine about the needed -24dB, but you just set it to zero! And after that, the level meter disappear from -24dB under -36dB?! I don’t use the included microphone. I do my measurements with an miniDSP Umik-1. Sorry for asking that again and again. I just hope to understand it right.

Hello how did you set up the Subwoofer..? If you watch the Arcam's own KZread video they say that you should have the output volume at max in dirac live and adyust back on the volume nob on the Subwoofer manualy after the other speakers output volume. Hope you understand what i mean..:-) Or should i set subb volume to half volume back on the subb and adyust the subb in dirac live output level so they match the othet speakers instead you think..? Have you done any more video about how to calibrate and adyust the calibration messurements "Target lines" ..?

It doesnt matter what you set the level on the subwoofer itself for Dirac as you set Dirac up after - however you will want to set it for what is best for your subwoofer design. Different amps on subs work differently I have found the SB13 Ultra subs from SVS work better with the volume nearly maximum - they seem to have better extension like that and that is how I set them. This might also be dictated by where you sit in the room and how much room gain you get and how much bass echo there is in your room. My Bass echo is very low due to a lot of absorption products from GIK acoustics. I do set the overall volume to maximum - 0db is maximum - above 0db makes no sense to me. Maybe you would need this extra gain in a huge room, not sure but I dont see the mileage in going over 0db for the overall level I do plan to make a target curve video - its bit of a faff get the footage I would want thats the only reason I havnt made it yet, I will try and do it soon. Let me know if you need anymore help? Thanks

They are going to have similar amps in to the Sb13's - I read advice from SVS re having the sub level high and input gain level lower - however if you want to check for sure email SVS Technical they are very good at answering questions from customers. In terms of your room size its the same size as mine roughly - its only a small room so you dont have to worry in that regard.

I don't understand having one curve for all the speakers (14:39 mins). Surely the orange line is now telling the sub to go up to 20 KHz and is also telling the surrounds to go down to 25 Hz (approx). I have different make sub, fronts and surrounds. I would have thought to leave each speaker as the green Dirac curve recommends as it has EQ'd them all already. Can anyone help please?

  • @PursuitPerfectSystem

    @PursuitPerfectSystem

    6 жыл бұрын

It doesnt work like that, the green line is just your target curve its what Dirac will eq not what it has eq. In an ideal world the best surround system would have all the same speakers all sounding identical for an immersive sound field. In the real world thats miles from the truth thanks to the influence of the room and often the use of different speakers in different positions for convenience. By adding all the speakers together you do 2 things - you ensure you set the same target curve is set for every speaker so that they all sound as the same as possible. More importantly it allows easier visual subwoofer integration with the other speakers. If you set the speakers to small after then the speakers and subwoofer will only cross over to their set frequencies. The rest is just graphs - not how things will play out - this is not the only method you can use to setup, but one I found easy. I do mention for safety reasons separating the speakers after in dirac and checking the roll offs at the extremes to ensure no over eq is done in the wrong places. Thats a just in case measure

Peter J I have the volume on my subwoofers set to nearly maximum. In an ideal world you dont want to use multiple equalisations but in practice you might need to. In my instance I have 2 very big room peaks in frequency response. One you can see in this video. When I run dirac measurements those peaks clip the measurement so I have to reduce the channel volume to stop it. This results in too low overall reading for the subwoofers . So I do use the manual dsp in my subs to reduce the peaking frequencies some so I can measure the subs at a higher volume in dirac. I hope that makes sense in what I am explaining there.

Hi again, Hope I didn't disturbing you... I got few more things to ask if is ok?!?! I watch all your reviews about Dirac and Arcam AVR's and it help me with my setup a lot... Now the questions are... First one... I'm using only one subwoofer Dali E 12F after the measurement if I connect the cable through the LFE the bass doesn't sound to deep but if I connect on the Left and Right input to the subwoofer using both pre amp subwofers (Sub 1 and Sub 2) bass it is much deeper how I like... Now is ok to using like that? Do I loose the crossover?!?! The second is...After I do the measurements, when you go at the end on the filter design you have down on the bottom thew things, first allready ticked (Measured) leave like Dirac it setup, the bass looks like it sound from one side were is the subwoofer only, if I tick on the right side were it show (Corrected) Spread option the bass is deep and looks like is come in from all speakers... Which I like more how it sound the bass. Is ok to keep the settings how I like or that Spread thing it just make the sound weard, I mean all the channels are not doing that sound accurate like without tick the Spread option? I mean the channels instead send the the sound in the right speaker when you watch a movie it just mix them up with this option... I do appreciate if you can give me an advise about all this... My sistem setup is 5.1.2 (front speakers Wharfedale 11.3, surround speakers Wharfedale Diamond 220, center SVS Prime, atmos upfiring Mission's and subwoofer Dali E 12F) Thank you and take care!

I agree, however with this range of Arcam AVR's it very often sets the channel levels stupidly high which means when you crank the volume the sound can distort and the unit can shut off. I have found you can get better overall sound by setting the speaker levels more appropriately and when you turn the sound up you don't get any distortion

Steve Evans Hi ,have no fears with Dirac live ,I have the arcam av860 ,and was intrested in doing the calibration myself ,so purchased the umic-1 microphone as this is what’s recommended ,then came the day to do the calibrating ,before anything I watched the how to tutorials about Dirac on KZread ,it’s very simple to follow ,just common sense ,anyway after moving the microphone between the positions it comes to what look like a screen of confusion ,but not so bad ,I found its best to link all speakers together so Dirac does one for all once this is done make sure you save it ,so you can go back and make changes with the target curve ,as this can be done until your heart is content ,do remember the target curve is set by Dirac and you could just leave it at that ,but most people make adjustments ,to suit ,by giving it ago yourself won’t cause any problems ,but would recommend watching the Dirac tutorials ,and vids on pursuit perfect system ,that’s the best starting point ,and regarding changing the levels on your receiver / av after Dirac has done its magic no! I left mine as is ,as it doesn’t make any sense to change ,good luck

If you're on a Mac, your only option in reformatting a USB stick that will work with the Arcam is to download Paragon's NTFS formatting tool. While Mac Disk Utility will format any OTHER windows format, it won't do NTFS. And of course, that's the only format the Arcam will accept. After 30 minutes wasted, it says it's updating.

Yes its same setup procedure for all Dirac - but a lot of whats in this video was specific to these Arcam unit at the time and not necessarily something you need to follow now such as setting speakers to large etc

  • @gingerninja7187

With changing the line levels set by Dirac doesn’t that have an effect on volume coming out of the speakers and making it not as clear for listening Say for example the centre is now louder than the fronts so it’s harder to hear them I’m not sure why Dirac sets it like this I just assumed that’s the way it should be to maximise the sound

The channels need to all be balanced, yes changing the trim levels effects their output volume but if you balance the whole system its not an issue and can be a good thing for a few reasons

Pursuit Perfect System Hi I’ve been told the Dirac live setup sets the levels to Dolby spec as if I play the 7.1.4 demo on the atmos disc all the levels are correct But when I did this on my denon avr it was miles out and would have to adjust have you come across this ?

@@gingerninja7187 Being honest I dont think the arcam sets the levels well at all after a dirac calibration. I am sure they are all in the correct place for balance however they can cause the arcams to overheat and shutdown which is unacceptable. I set them manually as a result

I followed your video verbatum but have a question regarding resetting the speaker volume setting at the end of the setup utilizing a db meter to 75 db for all speakers and I notice the over all gain is quiet a bit less than not using the new Dirac settings . Is it better to just leave the settings that Dirac so I am not driving the volume up to compensate?

  • @PursuitPerfectSystem

    @PursuitPerfectSystem

    5 жыл бұрын

75db is not important - it's not the number that's important but all the channels being at the same volume. Leaving the channel trims as dirac sets it would make sense except for in the case of my 850 it sets the L C R to +10db in the trip for no reason. I don't believe having any channel trim in +db as being a good thing. Turning the overall volume up is just fine in my experience better than having a high +db channel trim

Great I think what I will do is up the volume still using a db meter to the level which I hear when not using Dirac. This way the only thing really changing is EQ not volume.

I followed the instructions in your video exactly. I upgraded the firmware on the arcam to latest. Factory reset. Set my fronts centre and sides to large and enabled sub. I have my fronts by amped. In a three hour troubleshooting session last night I tried a range of different things with no success. Seems odd that the test tones are being sent to the wrong channels. When I get some time I'll do some more troubleshooting and just have one speaker active, then two, etc and build up slowly to my 5.1 setup to try and pinpoint. Just wondering if anyone else had encountered the same

Arcam needs to get it's head out of its @ss when it comes to being user friendly. As a UX designer, I see so many missed opportunities to make life easier for the customer in this product. The fact that we even need a video on this stuff, in 2018, is ridiculous. In regards to the OSD, Arcam, Windows 95 called and they want their OS back. STOP leaving user navigation up to systems engineers. I'm on a Mac, and I just spent the past 15 minutes trying every drive reformat I can in order to get the finicky 850 to recognize the files on the stick... still nothing. Download files > copy to USB > plug USB in BACK of machine while pressing two buttons on the front. Read this crazy long PDF with info I don't need. Are you f@cking kidding me? A $500 PS4 UI destroys a $6,000 ARCAM OSD. This brick has Ethernet plugged in, right into the back, and yet its not smart enough to update it's own stinking software.
