Tough call between the bomb explosions. The single bomb has a nice shockwave and the audio to match it, while the cluster bomb manages to hit several heart-strings with the way all those smaller bombs explode in such an almost harmonious rhythm.

This was my favorite arcade shooter for YEARS

Back in 1994, if any arcade were to get in a shmup, 9 out of 10 arcade would choose Raiden II over anything else.

Technically in terms of effects this arcade game is a top champion in its class,look at the effects, shadows, etc., everything is great! Big bravo for developers

Omg I’ve been looking all over for this game. I have very vague memories of me playing this with my older sister and when I asked her about it even she didn’t know what game I was talking about!!! I looked for a while until I almost became convinced that I made it all up in a dream or something. So damn happy I finally found this gem

The sheer amount of detail put into this game is extraordinary.... Particles, debris, explosions and Sprite animations.... However Weapon dedicated bombs (like in Raiden x) would have been so cool..

I remember watching my dad played this game at the arcade leisure mall when I was little. He lost at Stage 3. Good times. XD

This sequel to Raiden is what introduced me my older brother and father to the Raiden series way back in the 1990's which I think was back in 1993 or 1994 as there used to be an out of the way arcade located at a plaza in Bridgeport Ohio as my older brother got as far as stage number 3. Of course some years later I played The Raiden Project on my old Playstation console as I not only beat Raiden but also this game as well. Ah to feel young once again.

Awesome shooter! Used to team-up with a mate trying to complete this at the arcades around Athens back in the mid 1990s! I was shocked years later when I played this and the 1st on the PS1 in the Arcade Perfect Raiden Project Compilation. Good times indeed!

I first played Raiden 2 in a pub in Southport in 1995 when I was 7 years old. Just about made Stage 2 on one credit back then. Then I didn't see this game again until I played it in the TimeWarp Arcade in Bridgwater yesterday, 24 years later. A very enjoyable game even now, albeit very tough!

As a child the purple laser I call it spaghetti laser

Played this in the mid-nineties on one of the Cross Sound ferryboats. Absolutely blew me away and the graphics/SE are still satisfying today

At my local arcade back in the day. Is was the best player at this game. I would play during high school lunch. I would play for 30 minutes on one quarter everyday. Its not the same without the arcade experience. Letting an audience form behind you as you get further into the game. By far my greatest high school experience.

At long last, an arcade longplay of one of my favorite vertical scroller shooter, Raiden II, is here! Also a great gameplay there!

The purple lasers deal more damage than if it turned into the homing plasma stream.

One of my all time favorite shooters ever!!! So many memories playing this at the arcade

The best raiden of all!

I managed to find a PC version of it. Of course, with this version you can change the music, from the original Raiden to Raiden DX New Release or Viper Phase 1 sound tracks. I even tried the Raiden III and the Raiden IV soundtracks as well, and that was amazing.

God this brings back memories when I would play the flash version of this on Newgrounds and Gameclips on a dial-up connection which lags the game so much that you could reach the final boss with the purple beam and homing missiles were OP. I wish I could experience the arcade version of this game.

That was before the OG was able to be properly emulated until September 2014, and I prefer the blue laser to destroy the Final Boss (Mother Haven), whilst the homing missiles take care of those slimeball tanks.

The "shampoo beam" seems weaker once it fully merges together. It looks as though it's laser form is slightly stronger.

Richard Bell you would be correct. The beam sacrifices power for the lock-on capability.

But there is variability in strength depending on how much of the laser connects with the enemy, say a boss as an instance, the Purple beam can be devastating!

shampoo beam, lol. I've seen people nicknaming the plazma laser "toothpaste laser"... even in Japanese, but never "shampoo" 😃

man, I miss this game. there was a supermarket near my house. they have an arcade and this was my fv. 2 years ago, the supermarket closed. I did not have a chance for a full game (usually die at level 3 when I was small). Now, I cant believe that I can see it again, best ytb agorithm

The fly into space part is so beautiful

i remember this game looked really cool when i was a kid so I'd take a crack at it everytime I was at the arcade and could never even beat the 1st stage. damn those enemy bullets are fast not sure how any normal person can beat it.

I played this on the ferry from Dover to Calais in think it was 1989 or 1990 as we were crossing to France. Absolutely loved it but I could never find the machine again when I came back to the UK.

damn I can't remember the 90s or 2000s arcade I used to play, its similar to this game and you can choose out of 5 or 7 planes and there's a special plane that's hard to get with powerful spread weapon.

Yeah, Raiden IV has it as well, along with (I think) Raiden V.

RAIDEN DX on PS1 is exactly similar to RAIDEN II.

I thought mame couldnt emulate raiden?

There's only 2 home versions back then, PS1 and PC, both have the purple "toothpaste" laser. The first Raiden didn't have it, that's the game you're thinking of.
