Some of the best sounds and pixel art visuals ever created, and just a very creative way to design a game with humor.

I like how they use classical musics in a fun way in parodius series. So good

The game that determines difficulty by how long you survive, a rank system, the longer you survive, the harder it gets. No home port of this game retained the original arcades difficulty as they used a different rank system from this one. Needless to say arcade operators had to be happy with this choice as it kicked people off the machines pretty quickly. This version also only gives out so many free lives, after you hit a quota, the game gives you no more.

No, they were a bit easier, looks like Konami used a different difficulty system for them. I do wish the PS1/Saturn ports of Parodius Da had the arcade difficulty as a hidden option, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Thank god I've read your comment. First I played Parodius on Game Boy (which was pretty possible even with the hardest difficulty). After that, I tried the Super Nintendo Version, which has few more stages than the Game Boy Version. I beated it on difficulty 7 (the highest difficulty you can configure. After you beat it on 7, you will unlock difficulty 8). Difficulty 8 I didn't try to be honest, because I saw the Arcade Version. So far, so good. Of course I do NOT use any savestates, when I play games! Now what, I tried the Arcade Version and at first, I thought: "when I beated the game on Super Nintendo on difficulty 7, the Arcade Version would be easier or at least not harder". Well, the first stages were like difficulty 2... after each stage I realized, that the enemies themselfes are shooting more often and move faster. I got until Stage 8 but than after so many Coins and tries (guess I tried over 3 hours), I gave up. Some scenes were just IMPOSSIBLE to beat, because the checkpoints were tricky. When you die, you will respawn in the last checkpoint with 0 weapon. So you are immediately in the chaos where all of the enemies come, and you don't have the time to collect Power Ups. Your first try is your only chance, to beat the hardest checkpoints, because you have all of these Power Ups. When you die, it's over because you respawn all the time in a bad checkpoint, where you are in middle of the stage and all of the Power Ups are gone. You can not start over the Stage itself, you are just stuck in that checkpoint. I gave up, this is where the challenge ended and the unfairness began, which will make frustration.

This game is perfection

I spent a summer with a broken leg as a teenager basically doing nothing but playing this game. All these years later it still stands up as the best and most batshit shooter I’ve ever played

This must be one of the first 'bullet' games. I remember playing this on hard and dying alot by the sheer speed and frequency of the enemies and their projectiles...

In my humble opinion, this was the O.G in BulletHell games. Playfully throws so much shit at you, all the while stealing your powerups when you really need them (come on peeps, you ALL know what I am talking about! :-D), and kicking your ass to a killer soundtrack! Absolutely spectacular. and totally nostalgic.

Well done! That was some fancy action. I'm currently working on clearing the PC Engine port.

i was 9 when this came out and got it for christmass for the Snes, i have lovely memories of playing for hours with my sister.

I know the GameBoy Version of this game. I see many same stages, but also different things, but the grafic is amazing with this colors. :3

I have this game, and the others in the series in a few formats, just missing MSX Parodius on PS1 (got it on Saturn and PSP), Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius SFC (got it on PS1, PSP, and Saturn), and Sexy Parodius PS1 (got it on Saturn and PSP). Got this one here on PS1, Saturn, PSP, and SFC, Gokujou on those same formats as well. One can never own too much Parodius.

The amount of drugs used to create this game could kill 10 Rick James clones... DEAR GOD, that's a lot of drugs! XD

after watching this vid... i tip my hat to you sir. I could not distinguish where the bullets were coming from or how you dodged them. To quote a film "Bullets, they slide all over you, you play with them."

If only would make a remake of this with current gen tech, that way it wont have slowdowns and updated graphics.

Freerk Bethlehem If you want to play these games without Slowdowns try the PS1 Games...^^ Remakes of all (except GB and MSX Parts) Parts of the Series are available for PS1... And trust me... they get really difficult without Slowdown...^^ (especially if you play it on 7)

I love this game and the Parodius series to bits! This was one of my favourite and most played SuFami games I owned back in the day, it still is one of the most played. Just as I put sooooo many hours into the Gokujou Parodius Da!! Deluxe Pack on the Saturn in 1995. I still play that game all the time too! Strange thing though, I could swear that the Fugu boss stage was not in the Deluxe Pack. I thought it was a SuFami exclusive stage, I guess not! The music in Gokujou is some of the best ever made! It's a shame this series died with 32-BIT. Those games on the 360 are fucking shit compared to the Parodious games and it is an insult for them to be called "spiritual successors", bah!

Sorry for the reply after 9 months, but that song is based on Warship March (軍艦行進曲, gunkan koushinkyoku) AKA The Gunkan March. It was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during WWII, and later re-adopted by IJN's successor, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. It is interesting that this Version Misses a Stage! The second to last Stage (Bathing Area) is missing here. Instead you get directly to the last stage... :-( I assume it was added later...

+TheMarkus1204 Only available in the SFC version sadly, no other version has that particular stage. The main reason despite having it on PS1, PSP, and Saturn, I went out of my way and got the SFC version as well.

OMG I just found out that if you finish the game it starts again in hard mode!!! All powerups gone and the enemys shoot more than ever. I think they dont want the game ever played through. Or does anyone have a video of the arcade version played in hardmode?
