Arca Swiss Quick Release Plates - Goodbye Manfrotto!

Фильм және анимация

See why I'm saying goodbye to manfrotto quick release plates and switching to Arca Swiss plates!
I think Arca Swiss quick releases are one of the better ways to go for video camera setups.

+Ron De Torres Just FYI - I'm newer to the game so I started with the newer Manfrotto stuff. I'm using a Manfrotto MV500AH head and the new plates have all the same features as the Arca Swiss shown (sans being skinny) plus they sit flat unlike the Arca Swiss. AND they take the old Manfrotto 501/701 style plates (although I don't think the old plates catch and could slide out if you don't tighten the thumb screw).

Great Video!! I just got my first Manfrotto head and thought viewers who historically use Manfrotto plates might like to know this: The NEW Manfrotto plates have all the features of the Arca Swiss shown - top load, slide but can't slide out, etc AND they sit flat on a table top!! Better yet, the plates will take your old Manfrotto 501/701 plates (although I believe these do not have stops and could slide out if you don't tighten the thumb screw). Only drawback is they are still wider than the Arca Swiss. Just FYI about the new Manfrotto stuff in case some viewers want to keep there old Manfrotto plates while having all the benefits of the Arca Swiss!

Far and away that small SunwayFoto was the best of the bunch in this very well presented tutorial. It had ALL the safety features required in the QR clamp assy except for an indent to prevent a plate from sliding out ( not all plates have the stops at each end ). The locking lever tab within the lever is a excellent design function as well as the adj. knob on the opposite side to snug up an odd width plate before locking down with the lever. I believe the other two clamps in this demo did not have these features, which in reality makes them useless in that when crossing a brook or stream or worse still, the ocean, ones' expensive camera gear cannot take a Swan Dive into oblivion... Neat push lock on the SunwayFoto system, but far more important when shopping is the location of the balance bubble. On the SunwayFoto, when you attach the camera, it covers the bubble. Contrast that with the Desmond with the bubble on one side and the clamp on the opposite. While it may not be quite as intuitive, when you attach the camera, the clamp (or screw tightner) needs to be under the lens so the bubble sticks out under your LCD screen on the camera. Most current SunwayFoto's have the have the bubble on the opposite end, but a few, like the one in this video, have it in the trackway to be covered by the camera when attached.

I honestly think that the Manfrotto RC2 plates way faster to use than these arca swiss plates. The RC2 plates just lock on contact once you pop it in, and peak design also has the dual plate which now works with most Manfrotto heads. The fact that the plate still slides back and forth without locking it at a certain spot every time makes it useless on gimbals because that'll require you to re-balance it.

Not necessarily! Take a look at Novoflex Q-Mount II where you can clip and lock Arca-Swiss plates as easy as the RC2! However the Arca-Swiss system is far more used all over the tripod manufacturers! ;)

Arca Swiss is a great plate in most instances and I use them a lot. but don't throw out the use of a 501 or 701 plate yet... the Arca Swiss is made for lighter gear, and the 501/701 plates are made for heavier gear. I have a cannon 600 mm lens that weighs over 14 pounds attached to my camera, and there is no way that I would trust it to a 1/4 inch screw in a small arca swiss plate.

(I sometimes use a peak design strap, which uses a small Arca swiss plate) The main issue I've had is finding a good stand-alone plate, to mount to things like a rig, or a Davis & Sanford head. So I really appreciate the links and subsequent reviews provided! Also I think you missed some cuts near the end: 9:55

This year I went the opposite direction and started using the Manfrotto 323 quick change plate system. I find it is much faster to go from a tripod to a slider to whatever than using a Arca Swiss style plate. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2St2MqPeLXHgZs.html The issue I have with the Arca Swiss is repeatable settings. With the 323, every time you lock the camera in place it is in the same position as last time you locked it in place. With Arca Swiss the camera's position almost always moves as you slide the plate back and forth.

Will you recommend a ball head for my tripod (velbon videomate II). To shoot posed images of one to several contestants indoors. My main concern is moving from Portrait to Landscape quickly, keeping cam level. All other options are relatively unimportant. The ball head will remain on this tripod specifically for this use. At 8:18 he demonstrated it for the larger plate, attaching the Manfrotto to the acra swiss plate, then the Manfrotto side fits into the Manfrotto head on the tripod. Leave it there permanently. Then the camera with the plate attached slides into the Arca Swiss on the tripod. If you have the smaller Manfrotto RC2 head, just attach the 200PL plate to the bottom of the Desmond or SunwayFoto size. Saved me a bundle of money not having to buy new heads, and of course I already had the 200PL part of the RC2 system.

I visited the amazon page in your link but it appears SunwayFoto no longer makes the receiver unit (or "clamp" as they call it) with the locking arm, only the round knob. If this your understanding?

  • @davepov
    @davepov6 жыл бұрын

Here's an update to comments I made earlier. The SunwayFoto receiver is no longer sold through B&H. You have to go to Amazon. However, Amazon doesn't actually sell it either but they will connect you to another site that does...Asahido Japan. That added about a week to delivery even though we have Amazon Prime. The price was $98.91 per received. The Arca Swiss quick release plates do work with the SunwayFoto receiver, HOWEVER, the plates do NOT work with the Kessler receiver. It will not tighten on the plate so, it continues to slide back-and-forth. Kessler told me this is because Arca Swiss changed the "lip" on the bottom of the plate. So, we had to purchase Kessler plates. This is no big deal for us as we are using these plates and receivers for different cameras and set-ups. We don't have our Kessler plates yet so I can't say if they will work with the SunwayFoto receiver. I'm guessing it will because of the adjustability of the receiver. We see. I'll let y'all know. I can say I like the adjustability of the SunwayFoto receiver. Thank you Caleb for the info.

I have 2 Manfrotto tripods, Bogen 3221 and the 3063, i love the tripods but i hate the Hex Quick release plates because they block the dslr battery door and you have to remove the plate to change the battery. Does anyone have a suggestion besides buying new tripod heads?

On many Manfrotto heads you can change just the plate-holder-part to a arca type plate-holder-part.

i'm a bit confused because I'm on the market to buy a bunch of "things" for my camera(s) and want to be as hasslefree as possible. I do mostly street/urban/rural photography, but I'm also interested in shooting indoor (to do reviews/demo) and also a little bit outdoor. I bought a benro tripod with tiltable center arm and a slide lite by peak design that comes with an arca swiss standard plate. I now have to buy a video fluid head (I already have a cheap ball head that has a screw knob that I use on my gorillapod, but it's a bit annoying have to screw back and forth), but I don't know what to search for, nor have an idea of how I can mix things up (maybe putting a plate on another plate or... @_@). can you suggest me a way of having to deal only with that standard plate fixed on the bottom of the camera and can switch back and forth between photo and video head... also, if you can suggest me a budget fluid video head that do it's job without breaking the bank, it's really appreciated. Keep doing good videos, I'm subscribed!

Hey Paolo! I would be an Arca Swiss clamp (like this one: amzn.to/2f3WIax) between the tripod sticks and the tripod heads. Next, add one of these plates: amzn.to/2fZdQQV to the bottom of each tripod head. Now you can quacking swap out video and photo heads instantly!

Yea, but if you have something like a Miller tripod/head you are stuck with their plates, which are really expensive. Arca plates don't fit into the Miller groove. Dang!

Anything but using arca swiss is silly unless you like spending more and complicating your life. I use a manfrotto element monopod but when I looked at a tilt head especially the quick release kind went for arca swiss so my camera would still clip to my backpack strap. If something comes with anything but arca swiss I simply don't buy it anymore. Reminds me of apple stuff , no having to jail break anything to use my equipment.

Are there any fluid heads that use an arca swiss plate? or are you putting an arca swiss clamp on a manfrotto plate for your video head?

+Chris Maybe I'm sure they are out there. I thought Zacuto was working on one but it'll probably be wicked expensive.

I honestly prefer the 200PL plates from Manfrotto. I can pop them in with just one hand and its already locked tight. You don't have that with the Arca Swiss plates

Are you buying lots of music from premiumbeat recently or have you had it lying around from other projects already anyway (since PB lets you reuse songs as much as you want)?

First, try tightening the plate using this trick: dslrvideoshooter.com/how-to-use-a-quick-release-plate-without-tools/ Next, if that doesn't work try adding some electrical tape to either side of the 1/4" bolt that attaches to your camera You might need a few layers. Also, the 1/4" bolt you're using might be too long and isn't tightening the plate to the camera enough.

if it won't sit flat on the table just carry a fat cheese plate with you, there's got to be two holes that fit those two pins somewhere. toss the cheese plate down and set your rig on it.

I moved to Arca Swiss because of the quick release plate my gimbal uses is Arca Swiss compatible. I want to have an unified system so that I can move camera quickly between tripod and gimbal. Gotta tell ya once I started using it I am not looking back. I am putting all my Manfrotto mounts and plates on Craigslist soon.
