Second video from The Art of the Planted Aquarium, presenting aquariums which took places 6-10. My favourite aquascapes are aquariums of the 6th and 9th places. The first one is a very nice, simple yet beautiful iwagumi layout made by Georg W. Just, and the second one is a driftwood-based composition by Tobias Fricke, with ingenious positioning of Anubias nana on top of the driftwood. There is one usunusal aquatic plant in this aquarium - it's Ranunculus fluitans, a coldwater species of plant which you can find easily in Central European rivers.
All aquariums were provided by Eheim, there are standard Eheim aquarium lighting in the hoods (2 T5 fluorescent lamps) and Eheim external aquarium canister filters. No CO2 supply systems were used during the contest. The substrate was provided by Dennerle, however some scapers used their own substrate. There were no tropical aquarium fish in the aquariums because they are forbidden by the rules of the contest :)

Yup, exactly, just a white plate, skewed towards the top, and a small light at the bottom, behind the aquarium. Take a closer look at 0:55 - 1:02, the white background is clearly visible behind the aquarium.

I would vote aquarium #15 , 8th place to the top. #1. Some are incredible from an aesthetic point of view, but this tank is both gorgeous and practical for the fish. random like nature, many caves and hiding places, elevation to the right with the large water column on the left. I'm in love. Kudos to that guy.

They set up these tanks at home, well in advance before the show (like 3-4 months, minimum), and then they disassemble everything, and transport the decorations and plants to the exhibition hall, where a tank of similar dimensions is waiting for them, together with water and substrate (all is provided by the organizers).

The rocks are probably the Seiryu stones from ADA. Try to look for them in online aquarium shops in your country. And the plant is called Eleocharis parvula.

  • @DefiniteAquascapeTV

Well, it can be done. And maybe it's even easier than cleaning gravel, because when the carpet is present you won't be able to suck gravel granules (happens to me all the time when I do vacuuming of the substrate in my tanks). But the most important thing is that when there are not too many fish - there is actually no need for vacuming. The dirt is falling down between plants and substrate, and stays there for plants' roots to consume it :)

Sure they do. First, water movement is good, second, mechanical filtration is also good, third, additional bacteria in the filter will not do any harm - the more bacteria, the more stable the environment conditions.

Well, more info on yor tank is needed. There are many carpeting plants to choose from, but tie choice depends on the conditions you have. What size of the aquarium, what illumination, what are the water parameters, do you want to add ferts/CO2 or not, etc.

Hi your tanks are impressive. Im looking to do a freshwater tank design and was wondering what Driftwood you use.? I don't want to use plastic and want to go for the natural look. I've heard that tannins can leak into the water from the driftwood. How do the designers overcome this.?

That depends on the species of fish - there are some specied not suitable for planted aquariums. But most of the typical aquarium fish you could easily put itno such aquariums, and nothing bad would happen. The fish are not present in the tanks only because it's forbidden by the rules of the contest :)

Yeah, when one forgets about the kitsch-like part of this aquascape - it's quite interesting :) After all, the plants on the bottom are well composed and look nice. It's not a nature aquarium, more like an "orderly garden" (not sure if "orderly" is the right word, I mean that there is order in the way the plants are arranged :) ), but still - looking good :)
