Aquarium Algae - How to Remove It

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today we'll discuss everyone's least favorite topic in the aquarium hobby: algae! Without a doubt, algae is the number one reason people quit this beautiful hobby. Algae has a rough reputation, and rightfully so. It's unsightly, appears to come out of nowhere, and exists in some capacity in every single tank. But fear not! Once you've got some knowledge, experience, and the right tools under your belt, algae isn't so intimidating.
We're three weeks into the life of my UNS 60U, and the green hair algae and diatoms have arrived right on schedule. In today's video, I'll walk you through my step-by-step process for how I respond to that first wave of green algae and diatoms. I'll teach you how to clean your glassware with a bleach solution, I'll go over how to clean the aquarium glass, we'll scrub the plants, siphon algae/diatoms, and drain waste organics. We'll conclude with a large water change.
Thanks for watching! Don't hesitate to leave a comment and let me know how you deal with nuisance algae and diatoms. There are many roads to success in aquascaping, so I'd love to hear from you. See you in the next one!

Great video Logan! I love using small hoses to syphon out the little bits without losing tons of water in the process! Really gives you the time to remove all the crud before you take out too much water!

For how long did you have diatom algae? my 350L aquarium is soon 2 months and I am trying to keep the diatom algae down. There are fancy goldfish in it so the shimp are exposed small snacks 🙈 I often measure phosphate, nitrite and nitrate and all values are where they should be PO4 below 0.5ppm, NO2 below 0.3 and NO3 below 12ppm.

As long as you do your maintenance, diatoms never last for more than 2-3 weeks for me

I do it every week, but it pains me to use so much water (42 G) due to diatom algae, the water is clean enough for the fish. But the many plants do not like to turn brown.😔

does hydrogen peroxide work on the algae like the bleach does, would a 20 min soak in peroxide give similar results? i assume not right

20 mins is a lot. More like 90 secs. Test with a very hardy plant like an anubias first.

I saw that you use a Twinstar M3, but it's look like doesn't help.

I haven't done any proper controlled tests on the M3 so I can't say I have definitive data I can point to. I mostly keep it for the increased O2 levels and the cool factor haha. I'm a gear head so I like testing weird equipment

No matter how much I clean, I can't seem to get rid of my diatoms. Covers plant leaves and substrate but not the glass. Because of this, my plants are suffering. Tank is 9 months old and this is the only issue I can't seem to get rid of.

It’s quite abnormal to have diatoms for that long. First see if there’s an imbalance with lighting, ferts, co2. Of that fails I would consider RO water. If you’re using tap you may have high silicates that promote diatom growth

@@LoganRandoAquascaping Thank you. I am currently adjusting lights, ferts and co2 trying to find that balance. I don't think it's my water because I have an established 75g with zero diatoms. I just can't seem to figure out where I'm off! Trying my best to he patient because this is my first planted tank!
