Aputure Nova P300C LED RGBWW Light

In today’s episode, we have a look at the new Aputure Nova RGBWW LED light panel. This professional grade LED light panel features many of the things we are used to seeing in pro-level lights - durable build, good color quality - but also a few things we don’t see as often in the pro lights. This includes things like the wireless control via the Sidus Link app. Let’s have a closer look!

    Some have expressed disappointment that I didn't include my traditional Pros and Cons section. I did this because this is an overview based on 5 hours of use with the Nova. However, here's my initial list and we will circle back with a comparison video after I have a few months to work with this light. Pros: - Excellent color quality w/ SSI = 85 at 3200K - Substantial light output for a 120 degree beam angle soft light panel - over 10,000 lux at 5500K - Color temp accuracy - set it to 3200K and it is nearly spot on. - Green/magenta balance setting - no need for +/-green gels to match other light sources - AC or battery power options - Excellent build quality - Intuitive, well designed controller box which can be attached to light head or stand - Accessory slot for bespoke softbox or those from other manufacturers - Fan is well engineered to avoid interfering with sound - Full RGBWW - 2,000K to 10,000K plus full RGB range - HSI, RGB, CCT, XY, gel color modes - Sidus Link app for iOS/Android with color picker and color match - Effects - fire, candle, TV, lightning, explosion, cop car, color chase, & more - Firmware updatable - $1699 USD at launch - $1899 with rolling hard case - $149 for softbox Cons: - Heavy at 23 lbs, 10.4 kg for head, but that includes the power supply. Requires at least a C-stand - Cannot power with a single cine battery - requires 24-48V block batteries or new optional power station

    Hey Curtis, did you or your brother at one point faced operational issues with some earlier Aputure panel lights? If I recall correctly, the units were repaired/replaced. Tried searching for the video, wondering if it was you or just my faulty memory!

    @WL H Yes - I gave my original Aputure LS1s to my brother. After I had used it for probably 2 years and he had it for 6 months, the AC adapter for one of them stopped working. He contacted Aputure and they sent him another entire LS1s (the whole kit).

    Dear Curtis, thank you again for your calm way of presenting the facts of gear to your community. I'd be interested how the P300C keeps up in outdoor conditions. In all reviews I saw so far it's only used in indoor shooting situations. Most of the outdoor scenes in the official Aputure material are night shots. I don't expect it to keep up with a 6K HMI fresnel. But especially since they already announced the upcoming battery solutions it could be a very interesting solution for outdoor shootings where a reflector won't work but you have so brighten up your subject a little. Right now I'm using the Aputure C300X for brighter conditions which can keep up with the sun surprisingly well but produces very hard shadows and can only be used for a small surface to be lit. In cloudy conditions I tend to my Astra 3X panels since they are very easy to set up and modifiers are easy to attach. Having a solution that without doubt would have it's price (just the batteries for 1.5h would cost around 1000 to 2000$) but be reliable and efficent. You will always need a truck or huge car for carrying around the traditional HMI fixtures and without a circuit from a nearby house you're doomed to use a current generator which - I don't think you would disagree - is always a sound engineers nightmare and makes it very unconvenient and slow. Kind regards, Daniel

    How soft would this be compared to something like the LS 200d II + the Light Dome II? This is what I'm currently comparing between for my 10x10 filming room.

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    2 жыл бұрын

    Softness has everything to do with 1) how close the light emitting surface is to the subject, and 2) how large the light emitting surface is relative to the subject. So they can both produce soft light, it mainly depends on how large and how close the diffusion is to the subject. Out of the box, the surface area of the p300c is smaller than the front surface of the light dome 2, so the light dome II will be softer at the same distance. But you can shoot the p300c through any large diffusion material and get beautiful results.

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Christian, I think it depends on what you need that last light to do for your lighting designs. The COB lights with the Light Dome II or other large soft boxes are great if you have enough space on your set - they're a bit less expensive and produce nice soft light and can, of course, be used as a hard light as well. That's super useful for product shots or hair lights. The Nova is a great light in a lot of ways, but cannot produce the hard light that the COBs can. Hopefully that provides a little insight as to which would be most useful for you. Happy filming!

    Excellent review Curtis, this light looks amazing. My question is about power consumption/draw, do you think I could use this with 15amp outlets? Also how does this compare to a C300d ii in your opinion?

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Michael, thanks. Yes, this draws just under 350 watts so a 15amp circuit should easily be able to power several of these. The C300D II is a very different light and I see their strengths as follows: C300D II - LOTS of light output and capable of taking lots of different modifiers to produce any variety of hard or soft light. Good daylight color quality but not tunable so can be problematic when trying to mix with other lights. Nova P300C - Soft light only. A few soft box options - though the 3rd party options are quite expensive. Very good color quality at any temp, and especially at tungsten. Not quite as much output as the 300D II, but enough to be useful in most situations. If I could choose only one for my corporate work, I'd probably choose Nova.

  • @MichaelWynneCAS

    @MichaelWynneCAS

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@MichaelWynneCAS Yes, I'd pick the Nova over the 120D II as a key for corporate work. I do a ton of interview setups in small offices and conference rooms. To soften up the C120D II, you need a big softbox that often takes up too much room in tight quarters. Its color also is not tunable and it came in at close to 6000K as I recall - so tough to mix with existing office light in many cases.

    Ok...good to know. We can't have any of those old fashion lights (Arri) that get extremely hot. We regularly have people who help us do fill-in grip work and they will just grab a light to help us move a set-up or break down. It's a big safety issue.

    Hi Curtis! I'm looking at buying into a lighting system for use in my work's studio. We will be lighting a max of 4 people, more commonly 1-3. What do you recommend as a good lighting system for smaller studio like this? I've been researching into Aputure and Lupo. I'm leaning towards the Aputure since you get that bluetooth system in addition to everything else. I played with the idea of the Godox series of VL-UL lights but seems like your rating for color quality was lower and there's no G-M shift option. I'd really like to have a system set where I'm not having variety of color shifts between lights and the output can be big so I can film at higher f-stops or shutter than I can currently. Thoughts? Thank you for your fantastic videos, such great info. btw I just got the Mix-Pre 6 so I'll be purchasing your training on there here soon :)

    Hi Jay, the Aputure 300DII may be a good choice for this situation. I'd opt for at least 2 of them, ideally 3. They very versatile if you have the room for them - they can take a good bit of space once you put the Light Dome soft box on them. But 3 of them should provide enough light and give you enough flexibility to get started.

I just stumbled onto the Hive Lighting Hornet 200-C. What are your thoughts on that? More expensive and not mesh bluetooth but seems better across the board compared to the 300X. Better size/weight (14lbs lighter!), service/warranty (heard tales of poor aputure customer service) and with full 7 color chip RGB. Light output and quality seem comparable.

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    They can both be used for a key light. With the Light Dome, the 300DII makes a nice soft light source for interview shots. The Aputure softbox for the Nova is a little smaller, thus not quite as soft, but still very usable as a key. There are third party, larger soft boxes you can use for the Nova but they're pretty pricey. The DoPChoice 5' box - a dreamy soft modifier - runs around $1000 once you buy the adapter necessary to mount it. But it looks amazing.

There's a bit more information you should know before making a judgment on either of those. 1) I do not always summarize with pros and cons. I have a series of videos on pro-level gear in which I take this exact same approach - how is pro gear different from consumer gear in this space. 2) I received this light on Tuesday evening and Aputure originally requested I post a video on Wednesday, the originally planned launch date. Then they moved the launch date to Thursday. I asked for more time based on my preference to dig a little deeper into the product before posting my video. Aputure agreed. I work a day job so I had approximately 5 hours on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings to work with this light, and not on any corporate shoots like I typically do when there isn't a pandemic. On Friday evening, I shot the talking head portion of the video. On Saturday I shot the b-roll and edited the final piece. From my perspective, it would have been far more disingenuous to present this as a final review than as a "what makes this pro light different." What I can say now in terms of pros and cons is the following: Cons: - It is much heavier than most other lights I've used and requires at least a C-stand, preferably a Junior stand. But to put that in context, the Arri Skypanel S30 is very close to the same weight so this is not unexpected. Pros: - These were outlined in the video with color quality and output being at the top of the list - Price is also good given the feature set - Build quality - etc. based on the items I covered in the video Of course this will become refined over time as I have a chance to work more with the light. I will have a follow-up comparison video once my corporate video work picks back up and I have sufficient time to work with the Nova. I hope that provides a little more background info on why I approached this the way I did. I don't believe I have sold out, and I refuse to present a review with such a limited period of use. I hope you understand.

    @@curtisjudd This fluff piece is longer than the last review video you did with pros and cons. A solution to not having enough time, if such was indeed the case, is to wait. The fact you had to agree terms with Aputure kind of proves the point. Just be aware when you cut corners or make compromises, you risk eroding your credibility. This wasn't as egregious as Armando defending R5 overheating, for instance, but this sort of rah rah session is mind-numbing, benefiting the vendor, rather than informing the community you serve.
