    Really hope they gets a few videos out with some evidence of suspension tuning. The two deal killers will be noise and ride quality because a car with poor ride quality does not impart safety and noise is not something most will tolerate from vehicles with long range options. This is rougher than my friends slingshot and the noise might rival it too. I am willing to wait, I like the 600 mile range option best, but I am in no hurry. This will be my old man's motorcycle :)

    I'm a proud investor and I'm excited for the potential freedom from the grid to achieve mobility. But I hope they aren't just blindly copying Tesla on the interiors, I prefer tactile, straightforward controls on high-access features like the direction of my AC/ heat vents, signals, wiper controls, etc. I need to be able to keep my eyes on the road while I fiddle with these things as the situation on the road changes.

  • @mattb6001

    @mattb6001

    there are reasons to put these controls all into a touch screen interface. With cost and efficiency being major factors to this vehicle, ultimately that means more things will be integrated into the touch screen instead of having physical buttons and knobs. that being said, i've seen pictures of this having a turn signal stalk. but we'll likely need to see how things are after a couple more prototype revisions that are closer to production final before we can fully know what is what.

    as an older gen z person I get it. But I also think that with more buttons more things are prone to fail. I like the recessed air vents on the teslas but I'm not an owner so I haven't experienced what its like. I'm sure it's more annoying when you want to mess with the settings while driving. Aptera is supposed to be the number one next generation space era vehicle. I think a good compromise would be to engineer really good touch screen button panels or something along those lines, but that would be a long way off for aptera.

    I'm sorry to have to say this, but you just threw away all that money on a pipe dream. This piece of junk isn't worth the plastic the body shell is made from. It will never grant "freedom from the grid" as that is not something that will ever happen. It is also not something to be looking for. You seem to not understand how this stuff works. For one thing, this cannot charge at night without being plugged in so their promise to have it charged in the morning when you wake up will require PLUGGING IT IN overnight. Second, this thing is only going to get 40 miles of solar powered range. Somehow, it claims to also have 1000 miles of range per charge. Sure, unless you drive it every day. After a month of normal driving this thing will have the same range as an ICE car; about 200 miles per charge. That is simply the way batteries work, especially the kind of batteries this thing uses.

    @@protoborg you want a solar car like from the cartoon the jetsons where it can fly and it magically has 200 mile daily solar charging? I don't have to tell you that would be impossible. With the current tech this is the best they can do. And with tech always improving the Aptera in 5 years will likely be more advanced. I want this car because it's the closest I will ever come to owning a motorcycle after being in over a dozen car accidents I will not get on a motorcycle. Plus, it's the only electric car you can wrench yourself. The whole thing is designed to be maximally efficient for the environment and for your wallet. 3 wheels instead of four because four is unnecessary. Motors in the wheels to reduce weight and more room for battery.

    @@yanpingyang9028 I don't have a reason to believe that having camera mirrors would reduce the carbon footprint in the long run. I couldn't find a study made of the subject. Regular mirrors do affect the aerodynamics of the car negatively, depending on how they are designed, but are maintenance free and do not directly consume energy. They also function reliably even in extremely cold weather. I do not know the carbon footprint of a manufacturing process of cameras that fulfill the standards required from them. They would have to withstand constant vibration, extreme weather and corrosion. Backup cameras already face these problems. Motorised cameras have appeared to battle that problem, protecting the camera when not in use, adding more electronics and moving parts. It might become a more functional and reliable tech, a stable piece of automotive industry, but for me it has not made it there yet. The whole car being quite experimental though, might mean it fits right in. I just don't like it, even though I, contradictorily to your claim, care about my carbon footprint.

The sound of electric motor is somewhat discomforting. I would prefer quieter version if possible. The vehicle seems a bit too rigid; the suspension could’ve done better job when handling corners and small bumps on the road. I’m not sure if it’s the microphone on the camera, but the air sound is also too loud as well as those little jiggling noises. Sounds like a plastic and it sounds cheap. Hope we see improvements on them.

    You are correct regarding your observations in general. I understand that the beta vehicles already have a suspension that is not only more capable in the corners, but also much more compliant. Roush has done a great job with their changes. The foam filled shell should result in a much quieter interior in absolute terms. However, having worked on noise reduction projects myself - primarily for a diesel genset cover, - I know that everytime you lower the noise level there are things that you didn't hear before that become irritating. It is a tough problem.

Though I could be mistaken as hub motors are supposedly louder. There is also the fact this is an alpha and therefore doesn't have the foam insulation the consumer models will have.

    It is hard to say. With closed windows much of the noise may be gone. The inner and outer skins of the vehicle are made of composite and are filled with foam, so the thermal and acoustic insulation are likely to be very good compared to conventional construction. However, there still may be some perceptible whine. If so, how annoying it is will be a personal matter. When I was small, the whine produced by the rear differential of a '53 Merc is something I still remember with fondness from trips as I fell asleep in the back seat. YMMV.

    I had a ride in the 3rd "Luna" prototype. It was hardly farm tractor like. The handling in twisties was much more like a sports car. But you are correct that it was harsh - no worse than some other high performance sports cars I have driven. The hope was that the Roush designed suspension would be much more compliant and I hear from Aptera people that it is. Roush added a sway bar to prevent body roll and did away with the single swing arm in the rear in favor of a dual link suspension. These changes all need to be tuned, but indications are that noise levels are decreased, the ride is smoother, and the handling much faster.

    I wouldn't expect an answer to the first question for obvious reasons. To answer the second one, Aptera hired Roush Performance to work on refining the suspension and both front and rear and had a team of at least ten engineers work together to redesign it. The suspension has been made more compliant, aerodynamically improved, and a front sway bar was added. The rear swing arm was eliminated in favor of a dual link. Really cool to see it going. Certainly seems to be plenty quick. Squeaks and rattles you can ignore because it's a prototype. The motor whining noise would be annoying to me. One of the main benefits for electric vehicles is that they're quieter than gas cars and this certainly is not quieter than my gas car. Some of it I think is inverted noise but some of it also sounds a bit like gearbox noise although I thought it had direct drive in the wheel hubs themselves. One small critique on the side mirrors or lack of them, the screens take the place of those. One complaint about those is that when you're looking in a review mirror you don't have to change your focal length, when you're looking from far ahead and then looking to the side into a screen you do have to change your focal length. This is not a real big problem for younger people that have better eyes. But as people get older it becomes more difficult to quickly focus from distance vision to closer up and you can end up with eye fatigue especially if you drove in the city a lot. One other thing I noticed it seems as though the camera itself is not quite positioned perfectly, you really should only be seeing a small piece of the side of the car in the view. You're trying to see to the side of yourself, looking at the side of your own car isn't really helpful.

    @@kens97sto171 Noise is a funny thing. I developed a manufacturing process for acoustic insulation and worked on the quieting of a diesel genset. Every time you lower the db level for one specific band of noise, another that was masked becomes prominent and then you have to work to address that one. It is impossible to tell how well a mic on a recording is mimicking an in person impression.of the sound. I think the actual db level in the cabin is going to be remarkably low. As to how irritating it will be to individual persons, I can't make a guess. It will certainly be a less familiar sound than the automotive sounds they re used to and this could make it stand out. I have ordered the upgraded stereo, and I hope that the low db environment will mean that I can easily mask road noise with sounds I enjoy.
