    When they can get a vehicle to Aptera (Elaphe, who has a winter test track) , we will see winter test track videos, perhaps not until next Fall. I have a 2WD model on order and will use studded snow tires in Iowa. I expect that with traction control that can sense torque and adjust 32 times per wheel revolution, that it will be excellent and AWD will be better.

    If you some how flip, how do you get out? Unlike a traditional door and window, you would not be able to open the door because it opens upwards and even if you roll down or break the window to get out it seems the opening might be a bit narrow since it has a divider through the middle of the window. I wouldn’t think you could kick out the front windshield because the car is front heavy so it would probably be against the ground. Maybe the rear hatch might open enough but maybe not since it would be opening in the direction of the ground. Or could you make the divider in the window removable in such an emergency? Or maybe an emergency lever could be integrated that when pulled would disconnect the door from the car.

    I'd love to get an Aptera, but I'm worried about 2 things. My first minor concern is maintenance. Will this vehicle need to be hand-washed only? I'm not sure if it'd be safe for the vehicle to go through a car wash. My final concern is safety. How safe is this car in an accident? These vehicles, as mentioned in the video, are often categorized as an autocycle, which means they're exempt from auto safety testing standards. How will I know that this car won't electrocute me or any first responders who attempt to rescue me in the event of a crash. I mean, will I even survive a crash in the first place? Once this is answered, only then will I seriously consider an Aptera.

    This seems good for a single person , with no access to electricity. The money saved in electricity is $1-3 bucks a day (assuming full charge in the sun , 2-4 kwhrs worth). I'd love to see this car make it to the UK market. With 1000 miles of range, I'd never have to accept expensive roadside charging ever again. As others have mentioned, visibility of the side wheel assemblies is important for the driver of the vehicle parked next to you - especially if your car is on the passenger side of their vehicle. Those could easily be in their blindspot and therefore be fouled by the other driver when driving out of a parking space. A solution would be to have something like a pop up flag / other indicator out of each wheel assembly when parked.

  • @dangr3957

    @dangr3957

    The solution; if you have a fancy car try to not go to a public carpark but if you have to use one try to use the less busy places and if it’s too many car parking, park beside cars which reversed in. Definitely you must have a BlackVue dash cam with a parking mode enabled, so if worst case scenario at least find them to pay you damages.

This was great for handling, but would have only been acceptable for sports car enthusiasts. Roush redesigned the suspension, and the wheel motor wheel pants mounts have also been changed along with the wheel pants. There is now a front sway bar and the suspension is more compliant. The rear has a dual link instead of a single swing arm. I think it will be a much quieter and softer ride in the betas and my guess is that it still corners better with these changes. I think the increased compliance will make the suspension much quieter. Final tire choice will also have a major influence on road noise.

    As much as I like the Aptera I can't deny that it is a very wide vehicle, about 10 inches wider than the current Prius. Not that it matters to me because I've driven school buses, but an unfamiliar driver can expect to see a few wheel curb rashes if they are not mindful. A full-size school bus is 93 inches wide, the Aptera 88". yes, you can fit a small school bus into two parking spaces easily but only because of the box shape and mirrors. The video isn't lying about the Aptera being parkable, although those fenders will be parking issues sometimes. Definitely be careful with parallel parking. Won't be a problem with our roads because everything is wide. More importantly, than width is the turning circle which i'd suspect should be good given the short wheelbase and the generous amount of Toe range that the wheels seem to achieve.

    I calculated the Aptera Beta turn radius at 20.17 ft (6.15 m) [or less] based upon the following video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paVpysyMnr2TaM4.html Consider that the smaller (new) circle diameter is 5.5x (my measurement on the computer screen) the distance between the outer edges of the Aptera tires (88" which should be an overestimate as there are no wheel pants, hence the [or less] above). Since the radius is 1/2 the diameter: 88" x 5.5 / 2 / 12 (inches/foot) = 20.17 ft. Per reference.com: small city cars, such as Smart cars, can have a turning radii as small as 23.9 feet. The same site then talks about 2015/2016 sedans "in the middle range...of the list" having a turning radius of 37.4 feet.

    It's a nice vehicle that is being developed and produced not far from where I live, here in San Diego. The problem I have with it is not the vehicle, itself; rather, it is the rationale some people might have for purchasing it. Yes, it is a completely 'clean' energy vehicle, and it totally makes sense in San Diego, where it is both overcrowded and perpetually sunny. However, the biggest source of pollution in southern California is NOT vehicle emissions. In fact, if every licensed driver owned and drove an Aptera, it would probably have a minimal impact on the quality of the air we breathe. That is because a huge percentage (OVER 30%) of the air pollution in southern California is actually coming across the Pacific from CHINA. Foisting higher and higher 'green' air quality standards on California drivers while China just keeps upping their pollution and sending it across the ocean makes no sense.

    They are on track to start production in December, but there will be a slow ramp up in volume next year. My guess is that the number of preorders will explode once these are on the roads, so it is difficult to predict. The present preorder list is well over 26,000 vehicles and increasing quickly. AWD can be ordered. I live in Iowa and think that with studded snow tires, even 2WD will be fine. I will report on my experience when I can.

    I saw the video expecting a clarification for my main concern (UV resistance), but it wasn't mentioned. This car is designed to be charged by the sun, so it will spend most of its lifetime taking direct UV rays. How will the composite materials tolerate 10 years of direct sunlight compared to a traditional metallic made car? How long will be the warranty for sunlight UV degradation, and what will be the criteria for damaged panel replacement? On similar topic, what about the glue used to stick the solar cells. What is my resource if they start to fall off? Finally, for a car that will live outdoors, heat kills water stripping seals (I have seen it - a leaking car is not fun). Is there a warranty or maintenance schedule?

    @@famfloro A wrap is what was originally planned. 3M offers factory warranties against UV damage. We do know that they are now looking at other options too. Some of these decisions may need to be considered with several other factors. We do know that they were planning to use UV curing to produce the composite panels. There are a few other choices and this could all be interrelated I think that most of this will be resolved by the time production starts,, but I also think Aptera will be using the Kaizen concept of continuous improvement.
