Parks did not "impersonate" Jolson. He was just an a actor who lip sync'd to Jolson's actual vocals that were used in this 1946 movie, "The Jolson Story." It's no secret that Jolson desperately wanted to play himself in this movie, but the studio execs at that time deemed Al "too old" at age 60 to play the part of his younger self, so Parks got the gig. But Jolson sang all of the music. That's Al in this clip belting it out Jollie was dead four short years later.

My father used to sing this to me when l was a child. L'm now 81 and can still remember the words and sing along brings tears to my eyes, my dad had the most beautiful blue eyes and played the guitar another favourite at bedtime was ' Down in the Valley Valley below.' Dad had a lovely soft voice and it would send me to sleep. Great memories. No mobile phones or ipads to play late night games that excite the brain instead of calming and let it rest a while . ..

Donning black face is not always racist, indeed a few days before joining my university as a freshman I was performing with an Al Jolson tribute act in a local bar. Unfortunately it was full of students, not wanting them to think I was a ‘whitey; looking down on other people, I was forced to wear black face for my entire four years at University so as not be accused of being a racist. This spiralled down into me joining local black gangs to keep up the pretence and now I’m serving a life stretch for a drive by shooting after hitching a ride home with some boys from the hood. Ironically I still remain to this day, a huge Jolson fan.

Vast oceans wide melt into our sky Make rain an snow clouds up high Oceans far and wide are the supply Spring showers bring flowers to eye When if it's to dry in July they all die
As he got older hus voice sounded even better
Lovely song
Looney Tunes episode - Wet Hair brought me here
It rains in April
Donning black face is not always racist, indeed a few days before joining my university as a freshman I was performing with an Al Jolson tribute act in a local bar. Unfortunately it was full of students, not wanting them to think I was a ‘whitey; looking down on other people, I was forced to wear black face for my entire four years at University so as not be accused of being a racist. This spiralled down into me joining local black gangs to keep up the pretence and now I’m serving a life stretch for a drive by shooting after hitching a ride home with some boys from the hood. Ironically I still remain to this day, a huge Jolson fan.
Larry Parks as Al Jolsen in "The Al Jolsen Story"...1946.
❤️❤️❤️
The lady he sang to was played by Evelyn Keys.
tiny tim's version was so full of Joy. this is more dramatic!

Impersonate: to intentionally copy another person's characteristics such as their behavior, speech, expressions. I think Larry Parks did an excellent job of portraying Al Jolson and doing all if these things. evelyn Keyes was very good in her part too
Bugs bunny did a version of this in “wet hare”

I haven’t seen that - sounds interesting
Why was this actor blacklisted for portravying Al Jolsen? his name is Larry Parks.

He wasn’t blacklisted for portraying Al Jolson - he was blacklisted for being a member of a communist group. Very unfair treatment.
This isn't Al Jolsen, but an actor miming to Al Jolsens voice, I am 100% sure. How come that I don't get to read about this in the commentaries here.

If you look at the description it tells you that it is actor Larry Parks miming to the voice of Al Jolson.
Not Al, but pretty good.
Larry Parks isn't Al Jolson.

The voice is that of Al Jolson. The clip is from The Jolson Story which Jolson worked on by recording most of the tracks used.
It is a tragedy how Mr. Parks was "Blacklisted". What a total waste of a Great Talent. };-/>
