I met Fred in Seattle at a lecture... he told me to ride a bike instead of climbing because it didn't require rope.

My high school buddy and i met Fred at a lecture back in ~1986 in NY/NJ. He gave a nice presentation (slides) showing mostly nature from all his travels in the cascades. He gave me an 8x10 autograph picture, which I still treasure to this day.

I call it a leg coil. Works perfect for throwing it over your shoulder
