Kitty- I'm also an academic F1 doctor. This is a great video (as is your whole channel). Even though Im pretty switched on in terms of how to build a medical CV (as most AFP doctors are) this actually helped me. You gave me a couple of ideas of how I can score points in areas I'm currently lacking in. I'm asked by students what they should be doing. I'm going to start sending them this video. Any thoughts on how to score on the "training in teaching" section on the CST application? I don't have time to do a pgcert in med ed nor £700 spare for the RCS training course?

Thanks and glad it has been helpful. I think for training in teaching you would be hard pressed not to pay for a course - over the last few years I have seen various courses pop up that are cheaper than RCS but should still satisfy the criteria as long as it is more than 2 days. Can't remember what they are off the top of my head but websites like ASiT / Doctors Academy / other online courses would be a good place to start looking... let me know if you do find anything interesting!

Is it possible for an img who has 0 points to work his way up during his non training job+F2 year to get into core surgical training?

Great video and really helpful! What would you suggest is a good strategy to successfully network and recruit a mentor? It feels really awkward to cold call senior clinicians via email/at conferences and just say "Wanna mentor me?"

Louise W I think email is the way to go; in-person is probably a bit more intimidating if you’re an introvert at heart like me! I would write something along the lines of - introducing yourself, say that you’re interested in their specialty / research, and if there’s any chance you could work with them on any projects. You could also say you would be keen to talk to someone about a career in that specialty. Mentorships are formed over time through involvement imo rather than something straight out the gate. Usually consultants have responded well to me in the past using this method; or they will direct you to someone else who is more suitable.

(I'm also an AFP F1) Just to add to Kittys response; Of course you need consultants for some aspects of mentoring (like doing audits and research), however, most day to day mentoring is probably best done by people less junior than consultants. Most consultants dont really understand specality applications anymore. CSTs, focused AFPs, and keen senior medical students can probably offer you more help. Who you ask depends on where abouts you are at med school and what year in med school you are in.

Can intercalated courses be done during F2 year?

Interclaation only specifically refers to a degree taken whilst in medical school (usually a year away from medicine all together); so once you graduate you can’t go back and get one. You can however do a postgraduate degree e.g. PGCert, PGDip, Masters etc.

@@chiraagshetty7164 Yes, I believe there are some online "distance learning" options offered by various Universities; so you can do these part-time.
