First off the fact it is experimental makes maintenance and parts cheaper. It was a blast to build and it flies great. The RV-10 is four place and has a very large envelope. Under gross weight with four people and bags, full fuel. LOP operations allow 160 kt cruise and 9.5 GPH at 10,500 with an IO-540. ROP is around 13 GPH and 176 kt cruise. I usually fly LOP.

Hey Sean, thanks for your note back. I was there just after the crash last week and there was some speculation that the Tri-pacer who was "landed on" from above by the Arrow did not have or was not listening/talking on the radio. The point of my message to you was that while it is certainly prudent, there's no requirement to have a radio. Consequently, I think in an environment where it's uncontrolled", the need for predictability is important. Safe flying!

It does, you can also fly further north and come in through the canyon if you don't want to make the tight turn. I like the tight approach better. Thanks for the comment!

Sad news at JC. I will be going back soon and hope there are no repercussions for the rest of us going into such airstrips. Thanks for the comments, hopefully we can meet some time.

BTW...that's a beautiful airplane you've got. I'm very familiar with the RV's as I built an RV4 in the 80's and lived in the Portland area for over 20 years.

Shouldn't be unexpected unless you are not listening. If you are listening on 122.9 around Johnson Creek you would definitely know where I am relation to the field. In other types of aircraft I would be closer but the RV10 is pretty slick and I don't want to be in a position to go around. A longer stable approach is safer and gives me a chance to slow the RV10. There was a recent crash there and I suspect listening to the position reports may have helped.

the only thing about Texas that i hate is we dont have stuff like that anywhere near Austin.. but going west there are a ton of mountains in the dry sand ;)

There's enough Texans in Colorado we could probably pretty easily just claim it as an exclave of Texas, or just take back all the land that was the Republic of Texas.

That was a nice landing. I was curious how the RV does on the grass. Curiosity abated.

I design and sell mounts from PlaneAround LLC. Look the company up on the internet. I have more models coming. The mount in the video screws in the tiedown brackets so you can mount below either wing or tail. The other mounts I make fit on the gas cap or the wingtip. Fully adjustable and screwed down. They are built for experimental aircraft.

It can be a factor on windy days but I usually go in there during the morning hours or late afternoons. I have been in there probably a dozen times and have had good luck landing in the mornings.

This is very funny because in 2016 I had to do an emergency landing here in a Bombardier CRJ-200. I am a commercial pilot and while I was flying the bombardier, suddenly we got an onboard fire, and me and my copilot had to try to land. This was the only nearby airfield and our only choice. Me and my copilot then shut off cabin electricity to prevent from the fire spreading, but it still got through to us. We had to land in a cabin while it was smoking inside! I had barely any visibility and I was the one on controls. Then, I suddenly heard a bang and all of our electric systems went off. Radios and everything. Then we saw flames in the overhead and we sent the plane into a 40 degree descent. This is very risky but it had to be done cos we basically had fire over our heads. I then put down landing gear and retracted flaps and spoilers to help slow down. We managed to land but we Lost our landing gear after the heavy landing. Luckily, all of the 11 passengers and 3 cabin members alongside me and my copilot made it out alive. Sadly, me and my copilot suffered second degree burns and smoke inhalation but we came out fine after. We still fly together on commercial flights luckily though!

Just my $.02 here and I really hope it doesn't comes across as "preachy" or critical. Why such a very long downwind? When you crossed the ridge at about 4:25 in your video I thought "Certainly he's going to crank it around in one turn to final". But you flew another couple miles. Here's the problem...If I was no radio, I would have never followed you that far out, I would have turned base inside of you assuming you were not landing. Be careful of doing the unexpected.

I know that was posted 9yrs ago but were you questioning someone else's pattern and you intentionally flying without radios or are you saying comm died? Sounds like a good reason to invest in portables regardless.
