ya gotta pull the laces, do the tongue and also around the seams between boot leather and sole ... then warm them gently with hair dryer so the oil melts into stitching

I, being young, a little dumb, and inexperienced, may have already ruined my Irish Setters after only owning them for like two months. There are cracks and peels in them from getting concrete dust and slurry all over them and letting them dry without rinsing them. I just cleaned them today for the first time with saddle soap and I plan to buy some mink oil later today. Hopefully I can use them for the rest of the year cuz I paid $155 for them 😅 if not, I know better now and I'll take better care of the next pair I buy.

i'm a big fan of mink oil. i use the paste like this (the liquid and the spray is an unholy mess). but i use a small horsehair brush because i think it gets the oil really into the leather and the seams and any little cracks/scratches. then i let it dry, 10-20 minutes until it's not wet to the touch, and i go back at it with a horsehair brush again to smooth it out and buff it a little. the stuff is great to darken the color a little, soften the leather, and even increase water resistance. i repeat the mink oil every time i do a deep clean (saddle soap is my favorite). good leather boots can last for ages if you keep them clean and take them in to a cobbler for care when they need to be resoled.

I wear red wings typically. I usually get a year to a year and a half out of them. I actually haven't ever applied anything to them.....however, it's not typically the leather that wear out on my boots. I usually see the inside coming apart and wearing through plus the sole wears out. I guess I should look into getting them re soled. With all that said, I wear my boots day in and day out, all day long. I'm not a person who changes into slippers or anything else after work, or weekends.

Yeah, well if your leather sees enough sun (UV rays), rain, etc the leather will eventually dry out and crack, deteriorate, etc. It's an animal skin that no longer gets the natural oils it did while living. A baseball glove does not usually see much rain, nor does it get used everyday unless you're a pro.
