Apple White: A Character Analysis

hi hi y'all! Today I wanted to do a character study of Apple White from Ever After High. I had such a hate-love relationship with her growing up and wanted to compile my thoughts lololol. Hope you enjoy!! :]

The issue with the webseries is that they never go the grey route. They make it clear that the royals are in the wrong (and strive to make them annoying/unlikeable until they agree with the rebels), so it fails to feel nuanced.

@@OpticalSorcerer Oh yeah I agree, we never really got to see what good there was to being a Royal. Honestly Madeline Hatter makes a good case for being a Royal, since she does love her dad and where she comes from, but she is a Rebel solely because Raven is. I think if we saw some more of this, with kids proud of where they come from and wanting to uphold their stories/culture it would make a better case for Royals

Fr. I remember seeing a theory about how Apple and Raven may have been switched at birth and that's why Apple seems to lack empathy naturally. There's also the fact that Apple is the first blonde out of all the Snow Whites (because Snow White's very specific description mentions her having ebony hair; there's no way writers could've missed that). It may also create a sense of insecurity in her, not to mention how her friend, Raven, seems to show herself to be kinder than Apple. Apple herself admits to find Raven more beautiful (or does she, out of pity, knowing that Apple would still be more popular? She was still happy for Raven knowing that she won the beauty contest), and the result of the poll also lead to decrease her popularity, which her mother has also scolded her for. At this point, she may think that she must go through her storyline in order to prove that she is the rightful Snow White. If Apple does wind up to find out that she was destined to be the Evil Queen, then she may be even more determined to hide the fact that she's not the true Snow White, since she may not accept that her life was a lie and that she's destined to die

I think a LOT of people forget that she's a teenager & almost none of her motivations are her own. She's a product of the adults around her, who told her that all she & all her friend's would die if they didnt follow their destiny. Even when she finds out that's not true, she still has no idea whats going to happen to her future. At the end of the day, shes a teenager who is scared for her future because shes been groomed for a very very specific life. @@paintingdreams290 Well technically Poppy (or actually Holly) can also be considered a Princess Charming as she doesn’t have her parents exact fairytale. From how the books describe, When a Prince or Princess Charming gets married to someone with a story, the first son or daughter gets their parents exact story while the other children become Prince and Princess Charmings. This is shown in both The D Charming’s family and Briar’s family since her brothers all have names according to the Charming rules so they will likely end up as Prince Charmings. According to Darling’s diary, she strongly suspects that Grimm made up her fairytale and with the reveal that the Book in the beginning of the year was fake, he probably did. I believe that the only reason why Grimm allowed all of The D Charmings to attend Ever After High is because Their parents provide a lot of money to the school. (Additionally unlike with Poppy, Grimm could think of a story and Prince for Darling to be paired with.)

Because Eah is mostly targeted towards young girls, it tends to favor the female characters so Daring gets the most attention in the show while Dexter gets the most focus in the books. (In the show, half of Dexter’s scenes were adapted out or given to Apple, Darling or Daring.) In the books, Apple’s reason for being a Royal is because she almost drowned when she was little and signing her destiny was a way to guarantee her safety. (Also Snow White was kinder until The Second Book series.) In the Books, There was foreshadowing that Apple and Darling would be paired together about two years before Dragon Games came out.

I honestly do enjoy Apple as a character, despite her very persistent flaws. I always appreciated her dedication to her future position. She's academically talented, and very involved ( running for student council, helping around the community) because despite having a secure future she could just wait around for, she cares about fulfilling the role perfectly. In addition, when Raven made a change that would shake up the very worldview she believed in and destiny that she worked towards for years, I expect her to be scared and worried. It would take some time to reach acceptance about it, no matter how right Raven is. I believe that's why she's so obsessed with making her other friends stay in line with their stories too, and not just Raven. She outright says she is worried that Ashlynn and Hunter's books could 'close forever.' I do agree she went too far when she reverted back to her old ways in Dragon Games though. She was under pressure from two adults, one very powerful and menacing, and I appreciate that she finally snapped out of it when she understood the consequences of her actions. However, at a certain point, her actions were still her actions, and she was manipulative and short-sighted, and hurt others around her. I really appreciate the EAH gave Apple complexity and admirable character traits rather than just being plainly selfish and terrible. A lot of kid shows wouldn't. I enjoyed your analysis, I'd love to hear more of your EAH opinions!

Yes yes yes this exactly!!! She liked her future, but she was also stifled by it because her mother expected her to be utterly perfect. Even though Raven is right, it just completely tears apart Apple’s world and she can’t accept it. *Literally*. Her mother wouldn’t allow that to happen, nor would the school staff. She’s meant to be the golden child, and believes that is her destiny because everyone keeps telling her it is and forcing her to live up to it. It’s all she’s ever known. I genuinely really like the nuance in her character. It’s such a shame the series was cut short.

Plus it seems like this indoctrination of roles has been going on for YEARS. The term "The NEXT Snow White" or "The NEXT Sleeping Beauty" its no wonder she's so devoted to it. Even if she does know nothing bad will happen if she does not follow it. It has been the norm for such a long time. It also seems like she was groomed and trained to follow her destiny her entire life. You don't see Briar trying to make a high score for the most hours ever slept. She's living her life to the fullest before she closes her eyes forever. Meanwhile, Apple seems to have years and years of praise and education on her future role on her belt. Her mom has also pushed the role onto her as well. She does know that pushing back against society's wishes won't end the world, but it's hard to not fall back into old habits when a certain mindset and ideology has been engraved in your brain your whole life.

I mourn the loss of EAH every day. What I interpret from Apple's character is that she has been socially and environmentally conditioned by all of the influential people around her to act and be a certain way, adhere to certain rules, break rules when necessary...etc. What makes Apple so frustrating for a lot of people I think is how she often backslides into negative habits born out of trauma (almost dying when she was a child which you can read about in her diary and her mother's/other adults' pressure to conform to societal standards). But this is totally normal behavior for someone who has undergone what Apple has. Though she has privilege she was never permitted to be who she truly wanted to be. She wants to be queen because she's told since birth basically that that's what she wants and what's going to happen. It's my theory (and a lot of others) that Apple is a lesbian and has repressed her feelings so intensely that when they do emerge it's in a negative way. I really think she has feelings for both Ashlynn (at the beginning of the show) and Raven (towards the end of the show) and her frustration with them not conforming with her ideals, culminates with her feelings and turns into her lashing out at them. I really should do a whole essay on her😭

Not gonna lie, I've always hated Apple White's character. Sure, she had a pretty design and all, but that's pretty much all I liked about her. She always seemed so selfish, especially of her goals of getting her own happily ever after, that it didn't seem like she cared about anybody else's fate so long as she got to have her way. Plus she was so passive aggressive, always hiding her true intentions behind sweet smiles and polite conversations. Heck, I empathized more with Duchess Swan than I ever did with Apple White, especially if you know how Swan Lake truly ends. All I'm saying is when she bit that poisoned apple, I felt a little cathartic about it.

That does remind me that I've once seen a theory about Apple and Raven being switched at birth (also, Apple is the first "Snow White" who has blonde hair). In a certain way, it seems to make sense considering the nature of the two. Raven does seemed kinder while Apple was a bit more arrogant (idk how to explain that though; I remember that she has a tendency to ask herself in the mirror about who's the prettiest, but I don't think that in itself counts as arrogance). If they were truly switched at birth, imagine the shock she'd find once Apple learns that she's not destined to be Snow White. But then again, it can also be owed by Apple's mom, the previous Snow White, who can also be seen as mean and also pressured Apple partly to have her follow through her Happily Ever After

Not really. I always felt like Raven’s character remained static throughout the show, and that’s something that I really dislike about her character. Nothing really changes about her, and yet she’s somehow a better character than Apple, who at least has character development, one of my biggest gripes with Ever After is the lack of nuance in its message, and the lack of understanding between both sides, as the show continues, you see the Royals start to understand the Rebel’s side of the story and their perspective, but we never see that same understanding from the Rebels, and considering the severity of Raven’s consequences on Legacy Day, I was somewhat dissapointed with how no one ever called her out for her reckless endangerment of their world, not to mention how selfish and rash the decision actually was. Especially when you take into account that her actions had consequences in the books, fairies started dying, as the characters decision to rebel damaged the magical essence of the world, since fairies are made up of magic, they started dying as a result. I also really didn’t like how the show never brings up the potential consequences that Raven’s actions could have, in fact before the scene in Thronecoming where Raven calls out Apple for her selfishness, and Apple brings up the fact that because of her all of the people attending Ever After could die, Raven just shrugs this off, and responds with “But we haven’t” just because you don’t see immediate consequences doesn’t mean that they can’t happen, and yes she does decide to sign shortly after, but the disturbing part is she already knew about this, and instead of thinking of a compromise or a more reasonable solution she decides to risk the lives of everyone in Ever After because she doesn’t want to live out her destiny. What’s the point of even having your own destiny if no one will be around to enjoy it with you? Also, her decision shows a lack of self preservation too. That could’ve doomed her life as well. But the point is, considering what everyone knows, (the characters, I mean) I don’t understand this narrative that Apple is wrong for trying to dissuade people from rebelling because based off of what we know, they’re actively endangering other people’s lives, and their own by doing so. If we view it from this lens, Apple is in the right as she’s trying to protect lives, I feel in some ways Apple is actually the scapegoat, she’s ultimately just trying to do what’s right, even if other people may disagree, she’s trying to protect the world that they live in, and keep people from dying. So the idea that Apple is pushing her ideals onto others is incorrect in and of itself, you could actually argue that Raven and the rebels are doing that to the royals over the course of the series. The whole rebel agenda is inherently selfish as they’re sacrificing innocent lives to do what they want, in a way their actions could be viewed as villainous.

This is something I keep saying but Raven should have just been the main character from the start. The story should always just focus on the Rebels while the Royals were more like a parallel to them. Apple white as a character isn't bad, but very inconsistent which causes a lot of audience to just get frustrated and whenever she goes back to encouraging Raven to follow her destiny. To me personally I wish there was more build-up to Apple White as a person and why she's the way she is. Sure we do get it briefly in dragon games but that honestly was not enough information for me to care. What I think leads to the ultimate downfall this character is the fact that not much was done to make Apple White in a better light. Had if the series continued way longer I do think it would have fleshed out Apple White and give her a nice character arc of her fighting against her destiny and making a new one. Which would've had a been a great character arc for her character. Because the series ended up with a really filler episodes special it kind of just makes me disappointed that we never got to see the potential Apple White. If anything, I would say Apple White is more of a character who was wasted potential than a bad character.

I feel like the books handled apple better tbh. Although I only have vague memories of it, there was a distinct flashback to a time apple fell down a well as a young child and almost drowned. She feels that in hers and in others stories there is security, I think that’s a really interesting facet the show didn’t cover as much, she really is afraid of the unknown. All she’s been told would happen her whole life is the same thing. To go from that to anything could happen must terrifying at least from her perspective.

Apple’s conflicting emotions on the matter of destiny becomes even more complicated when you take into account the recent theory that the evil queen created a curse to switch the destinies of her and Snow White’s daughter meaning Apple’s more selfish tendencies come from her true mother the evil queen and the reason why she and Raven are pushed even harder to follow their destiny is because the grownups around them are afraid of their world being destroyed, as in their minds with two destinies already being altered the world is already hanging by a thread and they can’t risk any more changes. The main evidence for this theory is one their personalities both girls are kind and caring, but Apple’s kindness feels rehearsed while Raven’s is genuine on top of that Apple tends to be selfish when it comes to getting her way as she’s willing to do anything even if it hurts those around her (she does genuinely care but she more often then not is very self centered) as opposed to Raven who while she also can be selfish from time to time will always think of others and their emotions regarding anything, and two their hair, Apple has platinum blonde hair just like the evil queen (in dragon games during a flashback the evil queen is shown to have platinum blonde hair) while Raven has black hair just like Snow White.

Raven doesn’t always think of others, that’s a lie, her decision during Legacy Day attests to that, as she decides not to follow the fairytale destiny that was set out for her to do, but she doesn’t at all think about the other individuals connected to her story, or the other lives she’s risking by doing so, keep in mind she was told that her story would cease to exist, but that also extends to others as well, and her first thought was the fact that she didn’t disappear after the fact, she didn’t spare a thought to how this would affect Apple, she basically made a decision that could’ve ended countless lives and somehow she’s considered noble and selfless. But yet, Apple is hated by nearly all of the fandom for pushing her ideals onto others, arguably Raven did the same thing, if not worse, as she made a decision without considering anyone else’s fates. It is true that after the fact she does think about these things, but the narrative that she’s completely innocent in the rebel/royal conflict is false.

I would really love for show to push the question of destiny in a grayer area. Like, obviously ultimately the lesson is to make your own destiny, but I think they really tried to give complexity to the both sides, just didn’t really pull through at the end. Personally I love Apple and Raven conversation about who is being selfish, because though at the end of the day Raven is right, Apple DOES have a point. Apple is a great character. I think the question more is she a good person. The answer is maybe. Is she a bad person? No. I agree with the point of her being heavily misguided by the adults in her life, and I think people forget how dangerous being privileged is not only for the ones who are outside of it. Privilege not only clouds your vision in general, but the propaganda of the norm, of the tradition, of the golden cage is so much more welcoming and inviting it’s almost impossible to detect sometimes.

I imagine a good ending for Apple would be to slowly loose all her friends because of her actions of imposing her will on others, then getting a growth arc by finding her own purpose/passion and make ammends and apologies sincerely to everyone. I think her realization should be that she's not confident in herself and fears being independent from her destiny cause she doesn't believe people like her for who she is but because of how her potential future can be so she never risks it, but doing so she loses herself and the People she cherishes. It would be cool if some characters choose not to forgive her and we see her accept it with maturity, highlighting her growth

I’m also kind of disappointed that no one ever talks about Raven and her lack of character development, because if you really pay attention her character remains stagnant throughout the vast majority of the series, she does have a few moments where she acknowledges things from a different perspective, but those moments are few in far between. Her most notable moment of self-reflection and change is in Thronecoming, but that doesn’t last for long, and it’s really irritating because people often criticize Apple for her never enduring pushiness, and willingness to encourage others to live out the life that she herself desires, but can we really say that Raven is any different, she actively encourages other people to rebel and not sign despite knowing the consequences, but yet no one bats an eye due to her actions appearing more altruistic, in truth I think that’s the reason why the vast majority of the fandom takes Raven side in this conflict, because her actions appear more altruistic, however I’d like to counter that by saying that it really doesn’t. Both Apple and Raven only thought about others as an afterthought. In both the books and the TV shows Raven’s only focus is not signing because she doesn’t want to, and the fact that she doesn’t want to be burdened with a life that leads to imprisonment and misery, which is fair, I mean who would, however during the Legacy Day ceremony, she states “My Happily Ever After starts now” and right after her first focus is the fact that she didn’t disappear. She doesn’t spare a second thought as to what’s going to happen to Apple, or Hunter, or anyone else involved in the story, or anyone that’s connected to those respective characters, and her only justification for this is as said in Thronecoming is that they didn’t disappear so that means that nothing bad could happen, she has no foresight into these things, so why is so confident that things will turn out in her favor. Arrogance at its finest, and it’s the fact that she also shows no concern at all for the people around her, and how they might be affected by her actions. Apple is also guilty of this during the first episode, she’s primarily focused on how Raven not signing will affect her, she’s focused on the wrong things however, as the Headmaster states her story, along with herself, shall disappear if Raven doesn’t follow through with becoming the next evil queen, but I digress. Apple says “I have to convince Raven to sign the book my destiny depends on it.” So yes, Apple is clearly being selfish in this conflict too, there’s no doubt about it, however what really irks me is this fandoms refusal to acknowledge both sides of the perspective, and look at things in a more nuanced way, it’s just Raven’s right, and Apple’s wrong. She’s literally the devil incarnate in this fandom, even though arguably her only offenses are pushing her ideals onto others, and later on releasing the evil queen, which was a total accident. When comparing that to risking the lives of many other students and faculty alike, it just can’t compare. I say all this to help bring some enlightenment to the fandom’s black and white perspective and I hope that people will be a bit more open to seeing both sides of the issue. Also, say what you will about Apple, but to get back to my point earlier at least she has development. Aside from the episode Thronecoming, Raven’s character never really goes through any significant growth, and you can correct me if I’m wrong about this, but to me it just makes her a far less interesting character, and honestly she feels kind of flat. I feel like Raven’s character could’ve had more potential too, like maybe exploring a character that’s morally grey instead of good, as I said both girls have good and bad sides to them, the question is not if they’re good or evil, but how far would they be willing to go in order for their ideal world to come to light. That’s the distinguishment between good and evil, and I would’ve loved a storyline where unintentionally, Raven becomes a villain by rebelling, remember her mother was imprisoned because of her going off script, so maybe Raven is following in her parents footsteps after all, especially when you consider how Raven rebelling would affect Apple and other storybook characters at Ever After High, and Apple could unintentionally support a cruel dictatorship that would suppress the rights of other people, while unknowingly protecting people from disappearing and having their stories vanish. Kind of like a twisted character, anti-hero maybe? I just say all this because I’ve noticed a shift in perspective after the series continued for a while, it felt like the only ones who were doing any growth were the royals, in fact, most if not all the Rebel characters retain the same views as they had during the start, which proves my point. Both the fandom, the show writers, and even the characters themselves seem to have this biased viewpoint of the Royal/Rebel conflict and view it in a black and white perspective, and that needs to change, also sorry if this got kind of long I can be a bit long winded with my comments, but if you’ve read this far, you’re truly interested in what I have to say, thanks for reading, and leave a comment or like if you agree/dissagree. Also if the creator of this video sees this, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this too.

I kind of disagree with the take that Apple wasn’t interested in Daring, just because they were never dating doesn’t mean that they didn’t like each other. In the first episode she just says that they aren’t a couple because they have forever to be with each other, so they don’t need to rush into a relationship, plus she actively goes out on dates with him, nobody’s forcing them to go on dates, she actively chooses to do that with him, just because Darling is her true love doesn’t mean that she didn’t have an interest in other people, plus immediately when she wakes up she asks if Daring woke her, and even fluttered her eyelashes a little. She also seemed dissapointed when it turned out that Daring wasn’t her true love.

Personally I think that apple white is one of the best characters from a kids cartoon. She’s selfish sure, and that’s why I think she’s so good. Of course if you’re raised to believe that your life is going to be perfect and you’ll get your “happily ever after”, she doesn’t get or care as to why other people don’t want their predetermined destiny. She’s only thinking about herself and how she feels because that’s the way she’s been raised. She doesn’t care that Raven won’t get a happy ending because in her eyes “everyone has a part to play”. It’s very representative of privileged people that we know, while being a fairy tale of course. I find myself seeing apple as a representation of rich privileged people in our society (especially nepo babies) and how they don’t get or care about the people who are less privileged than them, because it’s never affected them, and to them everyone needs to fit a specific role. Of course the kids of famous actors and actresses who practically have their lives guaranteed for them (similar to the destinies in eah) think that lower class people should fill up those “lesser jobs”, much like how Apple thinks. Her being selfish as a reason as to why people dislike her as much as they do is something that hasn’t made sense to me. Of course people aren’t gonna like her because she is dislikable but that is intentional. So in my opinion she’s a great character, and I would’ve liked to see how her character ends off in the series, but unfortunately we aren’t ever gonna get that 😔

I always related to Apple and Raven when watched this show. Yes I did find a lot of her actions to be frustrating but even as a kid I was able to recognize that Apple is simply follows what someone with authority tells her to do. Think about from Apple’s POV. Your whole life someone tells you that if you follow a simple life plan your life is going to be prefect. You will be happy and get everything you wanted. All you need to do is follow these steps and so does everyone else, and everyone will be happy! Apple was being literally told her whole life that if she follows her destiny and everything will be fine for her and her friends. So when Raven challenges that, that is terrifying for Apple because she would actually have to make her own destiny. Which is terrifying thought when you have never considered it before. Sure it does come from a place of privilege but that doesn’t make it any less terrifying for her. She has never had to think about the unknown and didn’t want to. Making her own destiny was clearly something she didn’t consider until it was in her face. Probably why she had such extreme reactions but with time she eventually learn that is okay. Problem is the adults in her life constantly tell her it’s not okay and she needs to “get it together” That is a crazy thing to ask for a like 15-16 year old. Apple is a very complex character and I wish we had a more open discussion when it comes to her.

I get what you're saying Personally, I never liked Apple White. She was super pretty, sure, but that's pretty much all she had going for her in my opinion. She was incredibly selfish, submissive, controlling, disrespectful, not to mention kind of full of herself, and a really bad friend, hurting and lying to the people she called friends and not even thinking of her friends' feelings or what they wanted or even the potential consequences, just to get what SHE wanted. She's a flawed character and that's okay, but almost every time she's in screen, she shows pretty much all of her worst personality traits with little to no actual kindness and hardly any remorse for her selfish actions. While she wasn't exactly evil, I saw her as more of a passive aggressive, self-serving, narcissistic mean girl antagonist in a cliche high school drama film Raven Queen was a WAY more likeable character than Apple in my eyes... and for a time, I was under the impression that the two of them were switched at birth or something

my theory about apple white's character development heavily relies on whether or not her friends starts to call her out for the selfish behaviours and subtle manipulation but I believe that Raven plays a huge role in her development as well. We see a scene in Homecoming where Briar put Apple in her place, reminding Apple that she doesn't have the worst stories - "Easy for you to say, Apple. You get poison for what? Like a week?" - after Briar voiced her concerns about her story - Sleeping Beauty. And that was the first time we see anyone stand up against Apple in a more aggressive way. I say this only because I know Ashlynn technically did the same but not really. If Mattel didn't cancel the show, I feel like we would have seen Apple slowly realise that her actions are wrong and she might lose friends because of her misguided beliefs. It also very heavily symbolises what it's like in real life for children like Apple who believes the adults are right, not having an opinion of her own and keeping up the "perfect" image of the White Family. Did you know that Apple White was originally going to need glasses to see? That idea, I think, was scrapped but if it was canon, she actively walks around without glasses because it shows she's not perfect. Perfect grades, perfect vision, perfect poise etc etc. This ties back to Raven who has to be imperfect - bad grades, bad behaviours, just BE bad but that's not Raven. Raven is kind and smart and tries to help everyone that allows her too - HELL even Apple admitted that in Way of Wonderland! Raven is not like the Evil Queen and she's happy she's not. Whilst Apple is not like Snow White but she wants to be. In a way, I actually agree with Apple that Raven plays a very important role in her story but who knows? I am most likely just waffling nonsense haha

This is a bit a fan fiction idea if this hasn’t been done yet in the canon because I haven’t watched the show in a long long time but here goes anyway, Let’s say eah had three or two more seasons, season A, B, and maybe C. In season A there is some inciting incident(reflecting on the dragon games or something new) and Apple begins to have a internal conflict where her heart is telling her that she has not been behaving well and she’s been treating her friends poorly and that she needs to atone and be better but her mind is saying she isn’t in the wrong because all of adults around her most of her life(Mom, people running the system, etc.) have said her behavior is fine. And she was also told not upholding those values and not being perfect Is bad(if you want to make it harsher she would a disappointment to her family or she thinks this but it’s not true) so she’s also struggling with this in her internal struggle as well, all while trying to pretend she is all right to her friends. Naturally her friends realize Apples not ok and eventually get her to talk about and tells them everything, and they encourage her to listen to her heart and also help her confront her mom about it. I’m not sure wether her mom should also learn and grow or not, but from here on out through seasons B and maybe C she would commit to being a better person and we would see her try to atone on the side or with B-plots. This is all hypothetical of course cause the story got cut short and she never got to really finish her character development.

I definitely think there could’ve been more to develop her but just the concept of Apple as a character makes her so complex. I actually like that her mind fluctuates so much behind her change of heart and not wanting to let go of everything she was raised into believing to be truth (even if that was unintentional in the creation and writing of the show). Also if you have ever heard the song little miss perfect, I think that song captures here entire story and existence perfectly, especially with hoe she acts in season 4 around charming. Another thing to note about the comment on how Apple and Darling never really interacted much. Charming thought he knew his destiny and what story he was apart of. No one expected darling to be apart of anyone’s fairy tail or even if she had a destiny. The Rapunzel twins also showed how one child had a destiny while the other may not (I actually wouldn’t be surprised they got the twins mixed up over who would carry out Rapunzels story). Apple really had no romantic interest in anyone (some could argue she had a thing for raven). It’s more so to show charming was never destined to save Apple in the first place, and everything we and the character thought was completely turned around.

I think it would have been great if Apple was actually the evils queen daughter and raven was snows. This gives a wider narrative to the story about good and evil such as there is always a grey area. That explains apples selfishness at no matter what to obtaining her happily ever after and making her friends accept their story’s even if it’s not what they want. Later on apples realizes she is the villain but doesn’t want to be making her realize of raven felt and then from there the two girls grow and choose their own stories.

I can never bring myself to feel empathy for the characters who get "bad" destinies because all their parents are still ALIVE AND WELL, which means they will be TOO. Briar was always so freaking annoying too cause tell me why her motivation was FRIENDSHIP ONLY? Like girl, other people are supposed to go to JAIL or "DIE"; sleeping for a long time and having narcoleptic episodes is the least of your problems😂

I’m going to play devils advocate here, but Apple wasn’t the only selfish one in the Royal/Rebel conflict that Raven’s decision kicked off. A lot of people argue that Apple didn’t think of how her actions affected her friends, and while that’s true, Raven’s decision at the beginning was equally selfish if not downright evil, some people may argue she’s even more selfish than Apple. She jeopardized the lives of not only those closest to her, but also every last one of the individuals within the fairy tale world, and I know it does eventually turn out alright, but what if it didn’t, she didn’t at all stop to think about the effects of her actions on her friends either. At first I admired her courage to rebel and do what she wanted to despite what others may think, it’s part of what makes her a unique character especially when contrasted with Apple’s cautious and rigid world views, paired with her preoccupation of others opinions, the characters really are polar opposites, I think the term is foils. But even so, Raven had no right to take away that decision from other people, and I think in the book series her actions actually do have real world consequences for the individuals of the fairy tale world, I realize Raven gains some self awareness later on towards how detrimental her actions could be, but I hardly ever hear anyone both in real life or in their world call Raven out for her selfishness, and her reckless endangerment of their world, and frankly I’m tired of people pretending that this character is a saint when she really isn’t. I just feel that as of now, the conflict between the royals and the rebels lacks nuance, and whenever people analyze it, people are quick to point out the selfishness of Apple and the royals rather than acknowledge how the rebels and their recklessness have played an equal part in the conflict. I would’ve loved for the show to explore more of Raven’s flaws, her recklessness is a character flaw established in the first episode, and I think that would’ve been a great thing to build upon as the story grows, have both characters acknowledge their flaws, and develop a better world view together, and this doesn’t just extend to those two, this could be explored through other characters as well. I felt like the royal rebel conflict never had a proper resolution, but anyways I’m rambling. Say what you will about Apple, but she never forced anyone to do anything they didn’t want to do, yes she could be annoyingly persistent with pushing her ideals onto others, but Raven’s reckless decision endangered the entire magical world, she straight up took the decision out of their hands and almost turned their world to crap. with her decision to rip out her page from the storybook. That is inexcusable, and that is why arguably, she’s even more selfish than Apple, at least in the beginning.

i do believe Raven being constantly pressured is what led her there, it is also seen later down the road that when Raven sees the consequences (despite it being fake) she immediately signs it. I do think Raven was simply pushed to a point where she needed to prove the others wrong, I do think Raven wouldve signed it if the claimed consequences happened to be true.

some people act like hating Apple is so edgy & different when the story is literally supposed to make u hate her 😭 that’s the whole thing with character development, it takes a little while. We just didn’t get to see her whole character arc. ik a lot of people were disappointed when she sorta regressed back to her old self for some of Dragon Games, but I think this is actually super realistic!! The road to self improvement and changing ur entire worldview is by no means a straightforward one. Esp with the pressure of her mom being so much closer. To me it seems like Apple had always felt the pressure of following her destiny exactly how her mother wanted, even if it wasn’t exactly what Apple wanted to do with her life. And with all her friends suddenly taking control of their own lives, Apple’s reaction is like a reflex due to the conditioning of every single adult in her life. Remember, she’s only a teenager. Her friends changing their destinies will inevitably change hers, and she’s scared of not living up to her mother’s expectations. I’m not trying to say how she reacted was right, or that her friends should forgive her. She’s supposed to be selfish and make bad decisions. Obviously no one *has* to like her, I just find it a little annoying when people call her character “bad writing” when she’s one of the most complex character in the entire show :]

I feel like it would be very interesting to have Apple have an arc where she wants to follow her own destiny and also possibly realizes that Darling is her quote-on-quote prince! it would be cool since I always thought with enough work Apple could become a better person (plus it's not like they're full adults yet they probably haven't fully matured). It's always interesting since Apple is pressured by adults around her to be perfect too! It'd be interesting if she became a rebel since that would definitely turn some heads. I wish Ever After High was continued; I loved the show!

I think she would still be a royale but her story would go in a different direction than her mom. Her prince being Darling instead of Daring shows the changes her story already has from her mother. Shoot, her being friends with the so called villain of her tale isba huge change!

Honestly, apple and the whole show's initial tone was so nuanced. It really showcased the grey morality of people who are born privileged vs those who arent and who to blame for that inequality. Dragon Games was when this show really lost its touch, just making apple bad and raven good. It's dull and removed what made apple and raven so compelling to begin with.

1:55 the storybook raven refused to sign was a fake; with a real one still out there that’s why Apple was scared. The book could still have made her friends disappear if they didn’t sign it

I think the writers had bigger idea in store for apple's character but the series never continued which is a shame. I do hope one day they'll continue it In my analysis i think the writers had decided apple would be lesbian which if you see the lack of shock apple probably already liked a girl before but had forbid herself as she had to follow her destiny. As a lesbian girl and someone with alot of lesbian and lgbtq friends (and a girlfriend) i think this would be the most Logical or accurate too real life conclussion

Also, because of Raven’s story’s role in the fairytale world she risked losing many other people’s stories as well, because they were many different stories connected to hers. This is what I mean when I say she really didn’t think her actions through, honestly if it wasn’t for her kind heart, this action itself could be deemed almost villainous, she nearly doomed the whole fairytale world all because she wanted a happily ever after too, if that’s not villainous I don’t know what is, but yet people make out Apple’s actions to be super horrendous like she’s Satan herself. Point being, Raven took a very risky gamble, that could’ve had extremely detrimental effects to everyone around her, and everyone just glosses it over for whatever reason, but gets mad at Apple for questioning it or showing concern, her reaction is understandable, I can imagine I’d be very distressed if someone I know made a decision that could end my, and everyone else’s lives in the blink of an eye. If anything, maybe she should’ve been more pushy. Also why didn’t Raven think about any alternative options, you can’t just overthrow an entire system that’s been done for centuries if not thousands of years and expect it to be fine, you have to develop a new better system. I know she’s only 15, but like I said she really should’ve thought this through before taking such drastic measures.

Apple is the living example of a Spoiled Princess. Always gets whay she wants, acts nice to peoples faces so theyll do things for her, and throws a fit when she doesnt get her way. And no one judges her or holds her accountable because of who her mother is. I honestly couldnt stand Apple, and feel like an interesting take on the "dark counterpart" version of her should have been someone genuienly nice, and not wanting people to follow their pre-determined destinies. Honestly whaybwe ended up getting feels more like her actual personality coming out full force with no need to be so sugary sweet to mask her intentions.

She’s not evil but she’s definitely self centered and two faced even towards those she calls friends, especially Raven, who she’s constantly calling evil and putting Raven through emotional turmoil just to make herself feel better, and she will willingly throw them all under the buss to save her own popularity, she’s one of those people that hides her cruel intentions behind a sweet smile and crocodile tears, her mom and the adults are partially to blame for this and her head is definitely clouded by the privilege and praise she’s gotten all her life and the perfect destiny she’s been promised is also clouding her judgement, but when your best friend is going against her unfair destiny that should’ve been a wake up call that not everything is a happily ever after in fairytale land and as you said she willingly teamed up with the evil queen and manipulates and gaslights whenever she can, she’s not a villain but definitely one of the biggest passive aggressive mean girls I’ve ever seen, but that all being said she wasn’t past redemption, I could see her improving herself over time but unfortunately, we’ll never know what would’ve happened

Even when I was younger and watched EAH, I hated Apple for her treatment of Raven (legit Raven Stan for life lmao). I really did not like how manipulative she was when Raven said she was selfish. I also hated how she had basically zero empathy towards her friends and why they want their own destinies. Also acting like it’s their fault for how their parents turned out and that they don’t want to follow their destinies. She reminds me of one of those highly-privileged spoiled brats who complain abt little things and know how to get their way. I feel like her being an “evil” character would be interesting, as it can show that “oh, just bc you’re supposed to be like your parents doesn’t mean you will.”
