Apple TV 4K [Colour Balance] "Calibration" Reviewed on LG OLED, Samsung QLED & Sony LED LCD

Ғылым және технология

We review the new [Colour Balance] feature added by tvOS 14.5 on the Apple TV 4K box. Thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video! Head to www.squarespace.com/hdtvtest to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code HDTVTEST.
We ran the [Color Balance] process using an Apple TV 4K box (1st gen) & an iPhone 12 Pro on an LG C9 OLED TV, a Samsung Q80T QLED TV, & a Sony XH90 (X900H) LED LCD television, then measured the results. We even used a Sony BVM-HX310 mastering monitor worth £30,000 as reference.

    The one thing I like about this kind of calibration is that it would enable me to get more accurate color in game mode on my projector, then I could stream games from my pc to steam link on the Apple TV and have ok colors while in game mode. As is game mode looks horrible for me and you can't make any calibration on the projector while in this mode. It's something that would be super helpful.

  • @ShadowPoet

    @ShadowPoet

    Instructions are "within an inch" not "an inch".... the sensors are measuring wavelength frequency... this is color calibration not light intensity...

  • @privatename3621

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ShadowPoet NO. ONE INCH. This invalidated EVERYTHING Vincent said afterward and all of his measurements because he did not follow the most basic direction. You can see him at 1:10 literally holding his phone flat onto the surface of the TV screen. This is wrong. And it throws the camera and light sensor measurements way off. I wish Apple had found a way to put a crosshair, circle or some other thing within the outline of the calibration box, so that it could prompt users who don't follow basic directions to BACK OFF their phone to the proper distance. Anyway, calibrating your Apple TV video settings only and leaving all other inputs to your TV uncalibrated (as Apple apparently recommends) is a pretty stupid idea. It's far better to calibrate your TV using your TV's settings, but allowing features within the Apple TV + phone to help you adjust properly. I miss the old days when you just plopped in a DVD with test patterns and you adjusted white balance, contrast, colors, etc. based on the onscreen directions. So much simpler.

  • @Teja

    @Teja

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@privatename3621 no. It said within one inch. Not an inch apart. It said Keep your iPhone within 2.5cm here. And for what it’s worth Vincent did the right thing by holding it right upto the TV. As when I tried to hold exactly a inch part my hands wobble like crazy and that will anyday give a bad reading.Anyway, I tried all permutations and combinations like 2.5cm, 1cm, right upto tv with a case of 1cm apart etc. And holding the phone right upto the TV gave the BEST color balance. Which I’m now using.

  • @privatename3621

    @privatename3621

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Teja WRONG. Check with Apple. Learn how to follow directions. If Apple wanted people to "place your phone up against the TV screen" they would have said so. Most people understand that "within one inch" general means "about an inch away", and not "ZERO inches flat up against something". It's also common sense, right? The sensors on the back of the phone are being used for visual analysis: light sensor and camera lenses. And there is a big difference between measurements taken when the sensors are pressed right up against a few sub pixels versus measuring the cross-bleed spectral light being emitted from a much larger portion of the colored box when held roughly an inch away. Also, the light output intensity is very different when measured at 0.0 distance vs. an inch. But, sure, ignore my advice and try it both ways. You get two completely different results. And I would use neither. Because it is far better to adjust your TV settings individually by input than to have Apple set your TV settings globally based on an Apple TV-specific device.

  • @Teja

    @Teja

    2 жыл бұрын

    No. Within 2.5 cm means WITHIN that range. Not a range of 1cm-2.5cm. If it was that Apple would mention explicitly to not put it flat against the TV. And also, the goddamn camera and sensors wouldnt even work if it was flat against the TV as you are crying about it. If it wasn’t supposed to work when up against the TV the sensors and camera literally couldn’t catch the light and color. But they do, all the time no matter how many times you repeat. So your silly argument about it being too close to TV and blocking sensors and camera are blocked off is silly cos nothing is ever 0.00 cm away from anything. The Sensors work, Apple TV does its color calibration and I get more accurate results. End of story. Im not sure why you’re crying about it dude. Again, If it wasn’t supposed to be that way The sensors literally would throw up a error message or something saying “too close” “not enough light” but it never does. You try it yourself and see for yourself instead of talking for mute. Also, if you don’t care about calibration from Apple then why you complaining? Make up your mind man

    In order to get the full 4K, does it have to be plugged into the HDMI 2.1 120hz? Or is it meant to go into the HDMI 2.1 60hz? Thanks!

  • @wwp2181
    @wwp21813 жыл бұрын

    Quick question - Apple states 4K 60fps with the HDMI 2.1 connection. If 2.1 is capable of 120 fps (not sure if fps and hz are interchangeable here), is this just a matter of a firmware update on Apple's end to allow content to show at the higher frame rates like Gemini Man's intended 120 fps? Or is this going to be another marketing gimmick to sell you another Apple TV in two years?

It is disappointing the process doesn't yield better results as propper calibration is expensive, and tools that can be used for calibrating TV's and not just computers are not only expensive, but hard to find (I would LOVE to have my own colorimiter that I could use for all my TV's and computers).

    Hi Vincent. You raise a point here about the colour balance feature not being a calibration because it only affects the Apple TV box and not other connected sources. This is exactly the reason why I hate it when people refer to using ICC files on a computer as "monitor calibration". In every example I've seen, they haven't calibrated the monitor (or taught the audience how to) at all! They've simply adjusted the colour output of their PC to compensate for the monitor's inaccuracy! The fact that it is pretty much universally considered okay to refer to the use of ICC profiles as "monitor calibration" means it's near impossible to find information on how to best set up a display for use with multiple source devices. Have you got any advice on what equipment to use and the methods for setting up a monitor to the best of its ability using only the adjustments available in the menus? I'd really appreciate it.

    Does it in any way improve the picture for anyone that just sets their TV to dynamic/standard picture settings? I completely agree it's a weird reverse calibration thing, instead of fixing the canvas, Apple are putting a band-aid on the artwork. Samsung are coming out with a consumer calibration tool, and here is hoping the competition follows where hopefully as part of the TV setup people get a chance to do at least do a novice job of TV calibration.

    Fantastic video, Vincent. You covered everything. It’s a novel feature from Apple but one that has the pitfalls that you have highlighted. I ask myself why would they develop such a system? Mmm, the possible answer is that they would either produce their own TV or license out compatibility to other brands with the prefix, set the TV to “insert mode” (cinema, dark room, etc) and then perform the colour calibration. I wish you the very best for your new venture.

    @@alexanderulv3886 I'm not sure the giant tripod mounted light meter is what most normal people would consider entry level. There are various things out there like the Spyders etc, but it's hard to find solid information on the best place to start as someone looking to get into it, without spending thousands.
