These monitors really don’t have much in common, so they are really serving different markets, despite the M8’s resemblance to an iMac. The prices are also widely different. The M8 is really a TV with monitor capabilities while the Studio Display is a serious monitor serving a near monopoly in 5K displays. I doubt many people considering either monitor would take a serious look at the other one since they are so different.

Thanks. This is what I was looking for. I got Mac Studio but still on the fence about display. Currently using an existing AOC 27" until I decide. Will be difficult for you to define but I wonder how much better 5k would be over 4K in M8? My main consideration is picture quality and if M8 pic quality is not that much behind Studio Display's I'd be fine with M8. Decisions ! ah.

Is there much of a difference from the older M7? The one thing you didn't address is the Studio Display's refresh rate. The M7 and M8 both have a 60 hertz refresh rate which is quite low.

These features are just perfect for me to work on my home office work and enjoy my movies and sports programs. $1,600 for a display (it's still a monitor) is just an overkill for an everyday-use monitor. So far, love this Samsung M80C!!!

Do you remember how Apple said you could "order the Studio Display with the tilt stand and bring it to your local Apple store to install the height-adjustable adapter?" Well, forget it. I set up a Genius Bar appointment and then called just to be sure they had the part. I was told that (1) I must come into the store first, (2) the appointment is treated as a repair ??? and they could then order the part, and (3) when the part comes in, you schedule a visit again. What is really bad (in Seattle area) is that distribution doesn't even have the part!?!?! When I ordered the Studio display, the height-adjustable version (+$400) would take another 3-4 weeks and I didn't want to wait. Anyone else running into this?

The Apple Studio Display is made by LG. The Samsung M8 was released before the Studio Display. Comparing a 1600 dollar display to the Samsung M8 at 600 dollars is kind of irrelevant. Another words at 1,000 dollars more it should not only be better, but much better. Clearly the M8 is a much better value.

I was seriously considering it as a monitor for my MacBook Pro until you brought up the "Smart" functionality. I do not trust Amazon or Google and steer well clear of any of their smart devices (to include Android). Security and privacy are major selling points for Apple to me and I feel that this monitor's ability to function independently compromises that.

  • @joemysterymusic

A bit to unpack here and people have done a pretty good job in comments. I will comment on the camera/mic combo for each monitor 9:20. The M8 seems to have a mid-range mic emphasis and we are getting quite a bit of the room ambience. The Apple, meanwhile, has a more natural and rich tone profile and seems to capture the direct voice without much room ambience. This is preferable to my ear and necessary if your environment his noisier. Perhaps the quality of the Studio Display is a function of the 3 mic set up or is due to the quality of the mics themselves. As to video, the Apple seemed to have a warmer picture quality than the M8. What does all this really mean in the end? Hey, the M8 prices out at one half of the price of the Studio Display so in that sense this comparison is quite lopsided. I use a curved Samsung display with my M1 Mac mini at a second property. It looks outstanding so I am kind of partial to Samsung monitors. The 32 inch Samsung also offers awesome real estate for working with Logic Pro. I guess it will come down to what your uses will be and how you view the other features of each unit. Thanks for the post.

@@faautobahna9416 FA thanks for shout out. I am going to pull the trigger on a Mac Studio in Augist after vacation. I use my current IMac 2012 !!! for video calls and Logic. Waited all year for the supposed 32 inch IMac all in one that never came to be. Really do not want another 27 inch display hence my interest in scoping M8. I am also looking at ultra wides which I think will allow easier editing through whatever Logic project. Assessing their fit into the Apple environment. Apple really made the choice tough for me as far as monitors are concerned. I probably would have been willing to shell out $2000.00 plus if they had created a 32 inch screen. I believe there might be technical problems creating this size monitor at 5k and I guess they would prefer selling their $5,000 32 inch albeit at 6k. Anyway still looking. If you are really interested in the M8 I would try to see one in person or select online with a retailer that has a generous return merchandise option. The price is certainly attractive. Best.

Great video, thanks. But be careful here: 13:03. Like any other smart TV, this display can be sold “for cheap” because most brands will also mine & spy via the “smart” features. On top of that these smart features will probably become obsolete in 4 to 5 years (from now) because Samsung does not support (m)any of their Tizen or Android devices longer than that. They’ll become a sitting duck. But… for security and privacy reasons I wouldn’t hook up this spy device to the internet from the get go. Too risky. So, my advice is: only buy this if you intend to use it as a “dumb” monitor, without any data connection other than audio or video.

Its very easy to spot problem with Samsung is I saw at the shop back then. It looked fairly dim and bit wash out to see it. I wasn't impressed. So I wasn't opting for that VA monitor and went for high quality IPS like LG that I am sticking to which is 32GP850. VA is okay but concerned about lower colour gamut and volume vs IPS. Poor viewing angle like both side wash out while in middle looks fine on VA panel. It doesn't do well for photos editing when you need to see on edge and corner of monitor from VA as it looks wash out on edge and corner. Its very distracting. I know IPS is not great on edge and corner to the extreme as it does glow but most of time I don't see it. Not as bad as VA I often get bothered by haze and brighter on edge and corner. OLED is fine for some but I am too sensitive to OLED flickers so no go for me and I have to stick to IPS for now that is friendly to eyes and less strain and no flicker.

@@SuhaanaSafar88 Yes it is very common to have IPS glowing from IPS monitor unfortunately, it can only be resolved if you enable local dimming in miniled, the IPS glowing disappear. Like LG QNED91 TV or IPS miniled monitor with local dimming on for eg. IPS monitor without miniled can have either ATW Polariser or IPS black but it only removes some IPS glowing but not all of it. It's not perfect technology. Downside is having miniled local dimming on can introduce flickering to some IPS monitor and some IPS TV.

Overall I deep in the Apple ecosystem but I bought the M8 display. I wanted a display for my room to watch content and connect it with my MacBook Pro for work. I found different advantages of the M8 compared to the Studio display. First of all I consider neither of them good enough when compared to the Liquid Retina XDR panel in my MacBook and iPad Pro. The Samsung is a bit bigger which is important for me. Also, the Samsung can be used on its own for content consumption without having to plug in the Mac. And to top that of, bought the M8 for 450 USD, compared to 1599 USD for the Studio. For that price I would only consider the Studio if it had Pro Display XDR specs, meaning mini-LED display (which I love!!), 30+ inches, and higher brightness. For the price I also wouldn't say no to 120Hz, but it's not a primary concern for me. I don't feel that as it is the Studio display has the picture quality to back up its price tag. Overall, as a display snob, I would say that for sure the Studio display is a better display, but it is not a top of the line display, but it is priced like one. PS the microphone in the M8 is crap!!! I have to use my AirPods on every single call, otherwise nobody hears me.

Both good cars in their own right and yet not the same... Apple Studio Display is just that, an overpriced display. And the Samsung M8 just dropped a $100 bucks in price. In two years the Apple Display will be older tech, meaning it's overpriced metal and you're paying like a BMW for the name... I have an iMAC 27" 5K and while I love it, I can't see shelling the same money I paid for it for just an Apple Display. Samsung nailed it by having a monitor and smart tv for small spaces, studios or dorms. And for those who think that Samsung "copied" off the Apple, they didn't. Stay away, specially if you are using it for text like programmer, font display is very irritating and bright.... I'm regrating after buying M8 ,it's a entertainment device not a work device. Anyway Tv quality is too good. It's a smart tv not smart monitor.

Comparing Apple to Samsung.... Who cares about your honest opinion that most people will be better served by the Samsung? If someone wants a cheapish big monitor with a whole lot of bells and whistles, get the M8 Smart Monitor. For someone who just wants the better Retina quality image, the Apple Studio Display is a no-brainer. Sure it seems pricy up front, but amortised over 10 years, its not bad.

Do you think the monitor will hold up for 10 years/be relevant?

@@joshuapieper2945 I see no reason why it should not hold up for 8 / 9 / 10 years, or more. Dunno what you mean by relevant, but there are folks still using the Apple Thunderbolt Display introduced in 2011.

@@michaelbw As I said to someone else, I have a concern over the fact that it uses iOS, which could possibly reduce it's effective life considerably. Probably why Apple included it 😉

@@joshuapieper2945 Yes. My mid 2011 27" iMac still going alright with no difference to its display quality. Got a Mac Studio two months ago and my son uses imac for his video tuitions.

This is not a smart comparison. The Samsung monitor costs half as much as the Apple monitor.

I found the comparison useful. After WWDC, I'm considering either a Mac mini or Mac Studio and the biggest question, for me, is the monitor I choose to go with. Yes, that price difference is significant and the question is whether or not I can and should pay the extra for the Studio display. I think that the privacy issues with the M8 are eliminating it as an option, for me. However, there are other monitors out there that are just monitors and might be better choices over the M8 or the Studio. The biggest points for me are pixel density and whether or not the built-in camera/microphones on the Studio are enough to justify the cost? Since I'll almost certainly have to get a good camera and microphone for a display that is not the Studio Display.
