Apple’s Reasoning on USB-C Charging Ports and Privacy | WSJ Tech News Briefing

Apple is at the center of two big shifts in tech: privacy rules that have shaken the digital ad market and Europe’s move toward a common charging standard for devices.
At the WSJ’s Tech Live conference this week, Apple executives Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak spoke with WSJ Senior Personal Tech Columnist Joanna Stern about those hot-button topics.
Plus, Larissa May, founder of HalfTheStory, discusses tackling the downsides of social media. Zoe Thomas hosts.

    A possible reason for Apple to not use USB-C is to make their customers spend more money to buy cables, adapters, and similar garbage and underpin Apple's revenues at the expenses of the whole society for the pollution excess this practice generates. This is a barrier to Innovation because a small new firm with an idea for a next gen port will now have to send Lobbyists to the EU parliament to allow for exemptions. I asked ASUS a question - are there any replacement avaliable for the brick if it bricks? "The issue is solely on the retailer" was the answer. Went to the retail store and asked them the same question. Not one spare in existence. Just figure it out with USB-C cable, charging block and USB-C to DC connectors. Similar stuff with Lenovo laptop proprietary connectors. It can go 140w, there are already 140w cables and bricks (I've seen even 240w, but the price is OOF) Nevermind that in EU it is already common when new apartments and buildings have power iutlets in the wall with USB-A/USB-C ports.

  • @miketech79

    Apparently you missed in the video that they support different chargers, but the cable is the real mandate here. There is nothing preventing you from using a USB-C charger to charge an iPhone with the USB-C to lighting cable. Worth noting that Apple has for a long time now been shipping iPhone's with USB-C cables as well. So it's pretty much a moot issue or so Apple thought.

  • @ModernTenshi04

    @ModernTenshi04

    Жыл бұрын

    @@miketech79 The problem is Apple doesn't license Lightning to anyone else for phones or charging. They never added Lightning ports to their own computers, so it's a standard that only iPhone uses, and the "USB-C cable they include" is only at one end to plug into a laptop or charger that takes USB-C, but you still need Lightning at the other end for the iPhone. The real reason they're upset is because of the licensing fees cable and device manufacturers have to pay to produce stuff with the Lightning plug on it. You make three different length cables in five different colors? You have to pay a certification fee for each length and color to Apple, then give them 15% of the sale from each cable sold. They're saying this is going to be an environmental mess as cables and products are tossed once USB-C hits the iPhone, but it's a mess Apple made by creating their own plug type and then only using it on their devices, thus creating a split. It's hilarious to go into gyms and see older treadmills that still have 30-pin connectors from the iPod days that are all now pretty much useless, when if a more standard connection type was used those cables might still be handy for some today. Apple's complaints are entirely their own fault, and if anything the EU is looking to standardize not only to make things a lot simpler, but to prevent the e-waste issue from only getting worse. The Lightning port standard has never been updated in the decade it's been out, and it's literally just a standard USB cable that's been "flipped" so the tab that makes contact is the thing you're plugging in. It still only operates at USB 2.0 data transfer and power delivery speeds as well.

Yes, iPhone users will need a usb-c cable but when you upgrade your phone, you will be provided with one. Do you need 7 cables so you can distribute them around your home, car, work etc? No, you do it for convenience but you don’t need it. Eventually, yes, your old cables will become obsolete but most cables deteriorate over time from use so they were going to become unusable anyway. It’s meant to decrease the number of chords, (aka electronic waste) over time. Obviously we won’t see the change in 1 year. It’s a long term decrease if all electronic devices are forced to operate with the same accessories.

Apple may have reasons for doggedly sticking with the cable they use beyond the dubious "green" reasons, but they did not share them when asked. The only one I've heard mentioned in the comments that makes any sense is higher transfer speeds, but the primary use of that port for 90% of the users 90% of the time is charging and that doesn't require high-speed data transfer.

    People are arguing about horses when Apple is moving on to make cars. If you look at the past few years of the iPhone experience shift, the cleanest bet would be to move to wireless charging completely, thus removing the need for a connector. The original Airpods were released in 2016 and replaced the wired earphone. The release of the iPhone 8 in 2017 was the first iPhone to support wireless charging. The remaining key would be to increase data transfer speeds - but that actually already exists. USB-C can transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps - which is the same as 802.xx wifi - 5G can go up to 20Gbps, future wifi specs will go even faster. So audio, charging, and data transfer, can all be completely done wireless nearly on par with wired technologies - the Apple way would be to just simplify and go all-out wireless.
