Apple MPX w5700x VS AMD Radeon VII - GPU Real World Test

My Apple MPX w5700x finally arrived and before I sold my AMD Radeon VII I did some real world tests comparing the two GPUs. I ran a test with combinations of 4k Canon Raw, 6k Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera BRaw, 4k AVC, 4k MP4, 4k Prores Proxy and a mix of effects and filters. These are REAL tests that I did, not benchmarks.

Man, you have a Mac Pro but use unoptimised Adobe software. If you used FCPX you would be getting way better export speeds and scrubbing.

I would, but some of what I do needs to be passed along to clients when it's done and some of it I try to sell project files to clients after its done and none of them are using FCPX.

As a fellow Mac Pro user, I feel this. I've been Adobe since Final Cut X came out 10+ years ago. Tempted to give FCPX a go now that I have such an optimized machine.

As long as AMD has no Pro version with 16 Gb Vram or higher Bangwith, which only perform more stable in some high end professional Render Software, i personally would keep one or even 2 Radeon VII instead of any 5700 Card. Isaac Wettero did a good comparison on that. Would be interesting to know how this Pro Card is performing with Davinci Resolve, since the Blackmagic Software uses the most out of the GPU than any other software.

Same here, haven’t bought the Mac Pro just yet and still on the 2013 Mac Pro. Wanna know more about how the W5700X compares against the D700s and also the Pro Vega II and Duo. Sigh so complicated ! Thanks for this

I don't have the Vega so I can't help with that, but I did the same render tests on my 12 core D700 trashcan before I sold it. Working on the video for that now, should be ready early next week, subscribe to get notified when I post it.

Nice video bro thanks, I also ha e a Qnap Nas with 10g and just bought my 16 core W5700x module yesterday but will have to wait 60 days to get it here in Peru. I was wondering if you could do a test with resolve. I’m sure it will give you better times and a better you test as well as Premier only uses a percentage between 20%/30% of the gpu power we’re resolve will use all the toys you throw at it. I switched from premiere to resolve and couldn’t be happier. Thanks again for the video.

Thanks! I'm thinking i'll take one of the projects and do a Premiere/Resolve/FCPX test. Just debating buying the $20 SendToX app to make things easier.

@@calvinengel maybe you can pass it from Premiere to FCPX through Resolve without having to buy the other app. Just export xml from premiere to Resolve and then in resolve export FCPXML, it has worked for me before very well, just a couple of tweaks in some speed ramping items but nothing complex

I feel if you use Adobe premier it's better to use a PC if you use FCPX or DaVinci then a Mac is great. You may get better results using boot camp? I use FCPX I would to see a test with that.

I'm going to try to bring the projects to FCPX for a test as well. Like I said in a different comment some of the time clients need project files which leaves me stuck on Premiere.

@@calvinengel Ya I use premiere, i just wish Adobe would make their software work better. It could be so much faster and smoother. FCX is like butter.

For me I had to get a 580x when I ordered bc the w5700x wasn't out yet. So when I sold that original MPX module and the Radeon VII the upgrade cost was minimal and I got the extra thunderbolt ports. That said I think the Radeon VII is one of the best bang for the buck cards you can drop in if you don't mind never putting your computer to sleep (the fans kick up to 100% on it)

It was basically a wash with selling the original card that came with the computer and I got more stability from the system. I couldn’t put the computer to sleep without the gpu fans kicking up to 100%. Plus I got extra ports I use every day. For a slight drop in performance.
