The idea that they sell "lesser" chips from the same line of manufacturing is so basic and has been done always.

Pretty sure Apple used to do this back in the Power Mac G4 days too, I think the base model was underclocked for a very similar reason IIRC.

Most cpu physical disable the one core back in the day they used to use software but people find work arounds then enable that core causing more damage to the chip. Nvidia recently tried to stop crypto miners from buying all the gpu from customers by adding software to limit the abilities of mining via software but that didn’t go well either and people were exploit the software day one of the software release now they decided to do it physically instead of going the software route because no one really has the tools to physically change their cpu or gpu unless your a millionaire and has a degree in computer engineering

For intel a core i5 is just a core i7 wich didn't win silicon lottery same for i7 and i9 still the i7 and i5 are not called "defective" , same for rtx 3080 and 3090, They are less powerfull variants, the M1 with 7 core GPU is not defective by any means, they are just CPUs wich can't meet the stability needed , so they disable some parts it and price it lower. Binning is pretty common everywhere and shouldn't be seen as a wrong thing When your friend tell you he wants to buy a laptop with an i5 you are not gonna tell him to pass because it's just a rejected i7, same with GPUs you are not gonna tell him to pass a 3080 because it's just a rejected 3090 The clickbait title is just making me anxious because everyone is doing this not just Apple. Even in the car industrie and it is not something bad as long at is clearly advertise

I did say other companies do it... I also stated that it's common. The information is for people who aren't well educated in technology... It's up to them how they want to spend their money
