Apple HomePod Woofer Test - A 4 Inch Driver with Big Excursion!
Ғылым және технология
My curiosity got the better of me and I invested in a faulty Apple HomePod to extract the woofer! The process of opening it was just as difficult as seen by What's Inside and iFixit. After a lot of persuasion I managed to rescue this little guy!

When I first got my HomePod I was surprised by its bass. Stronger than I thought given its size

Finally, a video about it! The best looking beefy mini woofer so far... I just love fat surrounds and aluminium cones, and this one is a king!

@@iNubAlert well no. It isn't. I took this out of an actual Apple homepod. Check my Instagram page if you don't believe me. GHXamp are probably selling second grade drivers which didn't get put into the homepod. They certainly aren't Apple's OEM supplier.

Je suis Français, merci pour ta vidéo, j'ai un Homepod, et je me demander d’où venez les bass de cette appareil, maintenant j'ai la réponse un excellent woofer qui brasse autant d'air que des plus grand ! Merci mec ! I am French, thank you for your video, I have a homepod, and I ask that I come from this device, now I have the answer an excellent woofer that looks just as grand as grandiose! Thanks dude!
wow that thing likes to move doesn't it! I'm curious as to how it would sound in an actual box that's ported and has decent airspace. Also, North, Mid, West or South...? :) just curious

We’re you able to disassemble the HomePod with out damage? I can remove the sock and the top electronics without damage, but the rest of the unit seems glued shut
@wdbaudio

Sadly not! You're correct, the unit is glued shut and has to be cut open (I used a small saw and a dremel) but my unit was faulty to begin with. I don't recommend disassembly unless your unit is also faulty

@wdbaudio

Oh cool! I'd love to see that
A large speaker moves more air than a small one at even at low volume, big drivers always win, big engines too. A small driver have to move further than lagre one, the further it moves distortion levels go up. But at least it's impressive that small drivers can produce so much bass now, a JBL boombox with 40 watts would have been impossible to make 40 years ago in such a small package.
@hi-fidude6670

@DADOU OMÉGA Many use 8 inch speakers in the studio, not really that small. Bigger drivers can also go further down the frequncy range. For home, bigger is better. But quality also matters a lot, I've seen total crap 8 inchers than only go to like 80Hz, but my Canton Karat 20 can reach 36Hz with 6,5 inch drivers, they are how over top of the line stuff real wood cabinets and aluminium-magmesium domes
@hi-fidude6670

@Tekboy 808 I meant that a driver begins to distort if it moves too far. The big brands had great cone excursion already in the 70s, there is not a lot much difference between a 40 hifi woofer and a modern one, even in frequency range and distortion. 1970s 10-15 inch woofers can be insanely loud and clean. The rate of innovation in audio technology has slowed down because the big brands realised that they don't need to innovate to make a lot of money, that's why I straight up don't buy any modern equipment in most cases my gear frok the 1970s is better than what most brands are making now. To find great brands today you really have to search a lot. Even McIntosh has gone downwards, I have heard both the MAC 1700 and 1900 which are over 45 years old and have heard a modern MA 7200, I would rather have the old ones I find the sound to be better. The old ones are built like a tank they will never die.

Sadly that is what is wrong with the HomePod. Wow what bass... amazing. But it actually sounds terrible when you want to seriously enjoy music. Far too much bass that swamps everything else and almost no midrange where the enjoyment, bounce and subtlety is. I wish they would offer a flat option in the HomePod rather than let’s impress everyone.
@infiniteblaz3416

@@pauledwards2817 Your argument is rendered moot because the HomePod has multiple mics for a variable EQ. It may be bassy in one room but it’s not in another room.
@pauledwards2817

@@infiniteblaz3416 On a solid sand filled metal speaker stand in the middle of the room, far too much bass. I have used measurement mics with REW to equalise my main system out, found it was pretty close, and so use direct modes anyway, putting a DSP(s) in the chain may give cinema bass but sure robs music of all of its subtly and passion (how much music has significant content below 45Hz? Organ music, the largest orchestral drums, little in other genres, the CD allowed high intensity bass levels not practical on LP but certainly what the left us with is plenty of bass now possible but still little goes below 45.). The HomePod (I do have one) is the ultimate photoshopping of a great work of art. Sure look looks impressive but entire experience is ruined in the process. HomePod makes everything a cheap sequel to the original film, glossy, loud but just plain unable to move. If you are from the UK think of Michael Caine in the film Get Carter and Mr Stallone and his attempt.
is it possible to buy one
Looks similar to a dayton Tpc115-4
Can you please measure the TS parameters of the driver?
@StephanWahlen
2 жыл бұрын
according to someone in the Aliexpress comment section: Fs: 62.5Hz Vas: 1.4 Liter Qts: 0.82 So it lends itself heavily to a tuned port design. I Put it in a 5L (net, 9L goss) casing with a port tuned to 36Hz! Design should play down to 31Hz (-3dB), but actual response is a bit lower at these low frequencies. A bit of EQ-ing is advised.
Do you have the Klippel result of this woofer? Does it actually have 10mm Xmax?
