I have young children, including a 2 1/2 year old preemie heart warrior. I will be out there when my children are grown. If I don’t succeed in thru hiking the Appalachian Trail, finances will be to blame. I know that I can physically do it, because I’m strong willed and determined. I’m tenacious. I will succeed! I know that I can mentally due it, because I have already went through hell multiple times in my life! The woods are my refuge and sanctuary! They are where I feel my happiest! I got this!

The "washboard" sound may have been a type of frog by the way you described it. The howling was very likely coyotes though red wolves, considered critically endangered, are a unique species and can be listed under the federal Endangered Species Act. The only habitat for red wolves in the wild is on the Albemarle Peninsula in Eastern North Carolina, home to less than 30 wolves. There are no known gray wolf populations in the Appalachias. I missed Dismal Falls also. I did VA SOBO and the morning I was headed into Weary Feet hostel, I fell in a creek and had to be taken to an ER to get a couple of staples in the back of my head. I'll hit it before I get up north to Dalton Mass. where I left off.

Sorry this comment is a little late regarding women hikers. I was 60 when after watching my husband start section hiking the AT I decided to start with the hike out of the NOC having never hiked or backpacked ever in my life. Next I hiked with him through the Smokey Mts. When we completed that section I told him "you have to start over". We both went back to the approach trail and now have completed 1100 miles in sections over 6 years. I will be 67 this summer and our plan is to keep section hiking until we make it to Katahdin. I encourage anyone to try a section - it is a wonderful experience and you don't have to be a professional hiker to enjoy the trail and all it provides.

I lived in Honduras 11 years, teaching English after I retired at 66. I am so thankful for that opportunity to get to know and love those dear people! You are right about the wisdom of seeing in person poverty-stricken people in third world countries! What amazed me most was the joyful attitudes of these children! Once when I asked for volunteers to tell me one thing for which they were thankful, 4th grade Nolvia raised her hand. She said: "I am thankful for another day of life!" ❤

I retire next year an I have joined a mature women’s hiking group in western NC an hopefully, one day, I can meet up with and try some day hikes. Happy Hiking!

I absolutely love you guys! Seeing you and your son together touches my heart sooo....much. I lost my youngest daughter a few years ago, she was only 25. We both loved to hike together and had talked about thru hiking the AT someday. Since I lost her, I have been planning and saving up for the adventure that was supposed to be ours. I have booked my room at the lodge for next year, and have been buying some last minute items. I will be taking my baby girl with me in spirit and hoping for some self healing, in the process. I'm exited and a bit nervous at the same time. I miss her desperately.

I remember hearing about the very sad incident with the two hikers. At the time I heard of it, I was raising 4 small children and had not even thought about hiking the A.T. I will admit it did affect my decision to get on the trail, temporarily. Thankfully, I eventually determined in my mind 🤔I will not live in fear 😧 and start experiencing some adventure.

I know EXACTLY how you feel with the sensory issue with the nylon/polyester whatever issue - I have the same issue - I can feel super cozy in some fabrics but something in them slowly builds till I must throw them off - like some mild current or something weird is going on. I keep telling myself, "But it is soooo comfy"! Some chemist told me that polyesters are all different so that's why some don't bother me at all. Natural fibers are best for me; some fleece fabrics don't bother me at all, other scan be so bad I just give the fleece jacket away. Maybe get some other fabric between you and whatever is bothersome, like a liner. Washing new fabrics a few times often help. I have two sleeping bags the same style name, made by the same company, but one is the warmer winter version and drives my sensory system batty - the lighter weight one doesn't bother me at all. It all depends what it's made of though they may use the same generic label like nylon or polyester. Helps to get the new material chemical coatings off by washing. Good luck. Maybe for you it's something else and simple.

I am very intolerant of nearly all synthetic fabrics. They also usually stink if I wear them. Oh ; and no, it's not gross. There's a difference betweek "kit" and "gear". "Kit" is more what you actually bring along, "gear" is more just the stuff that you bring purely because you NEED it !! GREAT stuff going into ten minutes in !! I am having my last lunch at home before heading out tomorrow (today June 18, tomorrow June 19) starting out by train towards my next Camino, from Salamanca to Santiago.
