Appalachian Spring Ballet - Martha Graham - Aaron Copland - Merce Cunningham
Музыка
In 1944, Martha Graham's ballet was filmed in 16mm with the original cast, as a reference tool. Unfortunately, it was shot without sound, and as far as I know no one has attempted to add the score back.
I took the music from the 1958 film included on the 2007 Criterion DVD:

...and tried to match it as closely as I could to the 1944 version. This is all the footage that was included, in bits and pieces, on the DVD.
Bride: Martha Graham (in black)
Husband: Erick Hawkins
Pioneer Woman: May O'Donnell
Revivalist: Merce Cunningham
Followers: Nina Fonaroff, Pearl Lang, Marjorie Mazia, Yuriko
"In 1926, Martha Graham formed the Martha Graham Dance Company, which was founded on the principles of dance as inner expression. Therefore, she did not aspire for movement to be beautiful, as much of classical ballet demanded, but rather that it be significant. Many of her works dealt with explicitly sexual or violent themes, and Graham also worked extensively with the techniques of contraction and release.
She often created works entirely from the roots upwards, including the costumes, music and choreography. She collaborated with and/or taught the foremost artists and dancers of her time, including dancers Alvin Ailey, Twyla Tharpe, and Merce Cunningham, composer Aaron Copland, and sculptor Isamu Noguchi."

The original APPALACHIAN SPRING was less flowery than the one we know. I like this. TY for posting.

You did a great job of matching the film and the music. It's fantastic to see the great Martha Graham dance this role.

WOW! Thank you for posting this!
What a superb contribution you've made! Your synchronization is terrific, not that I know the dance, but it sounds like it's matching the dance. Bravo and thanks.

PamelaJean2013 Thanks - did the best I could. I wish they had included the entire ballet on the DVD!
Good synchronicity between silent film and music
joshuajeffery I really love the Pioneer Woman in this original rendition. In the '58 version she's less stoic (no offense to the incomparable Matt Turney). I'm also super thankful for this being filmed...it's incredible to see Martha move at her prime as well as the legendary Merce Cunningham.

She actually has a technique that has some elements of Graham. It is a little kinder to the hips ;)
Merce Cunningham is from my hometown.
You did ADD THE MUSIC? I am speechless, i clearly imagine the effort and INTELLIGENCE needed to achieve this Formidable Result === BRAVISSIMO, Classics! === (Why t.f. "Broadway"...?)

Thanks - it was very tough to synch it up! (The channel is a catch-all. I just named it Broadway Classics because that's how it started.)
101germx thanks a ton, you saved my dance grade...gotta write a paper on this . britandveg Awesome!!! . Evetskeem Moving and beautiful, thank you.
@myrna38717 No, it's a film made for reference purposes.
My favorite song "Simple Gifts"
Wikipedia lists eight sections: 1. Very slowly 2. Fast/Allegro 3. Moderate/Moderato - Duo for the Bride and her Intended 4. Quite fast - The Revivalist and his flock. 5. Still faster/Subito Allegro - Solo dance of the Bride 6. Very slowly 7. Calm and flowing/Doppio Movimento - "The Gift to Be Simple." 8. Moderate. Coda/Moderato
I want to hear and order Erin Copeland opis 13
I was delighted to find this. Do you know if this is a film of the premiere at the Library of Congress? (Also, fyi, Marjorie Mazia was married to Woody Guthrie and is Arlo Guthrie's mother.)
I know the whole piece is Copland, but does anyone know what the piece of music is called from 4:14 on wards? His piece is broken down into many different sections, and I cant seem to find the right one. This for my Dance Degree, I have to reconstruct a pre-1960's American theatre piece! :D Thanks in Advance
