Appalachian People, Culture, and History - ROBERT SEPEHR

While the Appalachian Mountains stretch from parts of Canada to Alabama, the cultural region of Appalachia typically refers only to the central and southern portions ranging from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, south-westerly to the Great Smoky Mountains, and is called home by approximately 25 million people.
atlanteangardens.blogspot.com...
Appalachian people are considered a separate culture, made up of many unique backgrounds-Native Americans, Irish, English and Scotch, and then a third descendants of German and Polish immigrants-all blended together across the region.

My last name is Mullins, born and raised in southeast Kentucky (Harlan), and I am aware of the connection between the black haired, blue-eyed, dark skinned people referred to as Melungeon and the Mullins family. Other Appalachian topics I would enjoy seeing you explore are the mountain folk given the title of the "Quadrule" Indians, as well as the ancient Mound Builders of the region. Much, much more could be studied in regards to this region. Thank you for your excellent work!

This is my lineage. My grandfather was a moonshiner; my whole family were musicians taught by ear. My two sons played the violin- by ear and trained. We would gather under the stars eating and playing music. Christianity had set it's shame on dancing and drinking, so drinking was done discretely. When the inebriated couldn't hold their spirit back any longer, dancing would break out. I miss your narration:)

Excellent video, thank you, Dr. Sepehr. I bought land and a small farm home in Appalachia (NW North Carolina) in 2014. Although absolutely beautiful, it was so inexpensive, that I agreed to a 14 month mortgage and paid it off in said time. Upon paying the final payment to the elderly lady in person, she said she loved me, and that her family didn't believe I'd make good on the agreement. Believe it or not, I bought the property from the Boone family, and to boot, I bought it as is and we didn't use banks, which saved all of us money. The small town I live in is dry, as the sale of alcohol is illegal, but the moonshiners still produce it. It's quite understandable that they don't want competition from the big box liquor stores, etc. The people I've met up here have a great work ethic and the biggest hearts ever. I've been invited to and have visited many churches. The only thing that disappoints me about having relocated here is that 9 out of the 10 churches preach dispensationalism. Unfortunately, John Nelson Darby, Clarence Larkin and Cyrus I. Schofield's dispensation and pro-zionist stance has taken deep root here. Schofield Reference Bibles are everywhere and it's not uncommon to see John Hagee's books lying around. Regardless, it's an absolutely wonderful place to grow roots and settle down.

for years we have endured ridicule and scorn from Hollywood about our culture. we have seen our children shamed over the way we speak, think, and way of doing things. our children no longer want to learn of their origins due to the shame; I fear we are losing our culture and in doing so we lose a part of America. poverty is a way of life; any economic strides are reserved for urban areas and taxes pave the roads in Richmond. there is an epidemic of opioid addiction in our area that results from poverty and hopelessness. we still have those who come to this region and try to take what little we have in the form of taxation. we still just want to be left alone to live our lives without the interference of government or those who consider us ignorant and uneducated. thank you for this documentary and the respect in which it was presented. southwestern Virginia resident

Hi Robert - the clog dancing is more akin to the northern England clog dancing of the industrial revolution era and after that it is the Celtic nation style of dance which again was booted rather than clogged - the Appalachian mountains had a hard core of northern English folk, yorkshiremen and their ilk, miners and farmers, as well as Cornish miners who were always in demand in mountainous areas of the americas, north central and south. The north west of England has strong ties with Ireland as the north and north east, Yorkshire up through Northumberland, had and has with the Scots. Clog dancing isnt a specifically northern English theme but its is the heartland of that style of dance. That journey from northern England to North America and beyond can be seen in some of the North American ‘outlaws’ and ‘sherfiffs’ that later rose to fame - they were usually of northern English stock - wild bill hickock (not sure on the spelling) was I believe a Yorkshireman. As a northern English person (Yorkshireman) it does seem that we regularly get left out of history - for instance Rorkes Drift wasn’t the welsh but it made for a good movie script, and various expeditions and explorations over the centuries have been by men and women of Northumberland and the north but they seem to get homogenised into the south east English thing - we all seem to come from London and there are 62million of us in the UK - big city. Thought you might be interested you can still see that sort of dancing in northern folk festivals and various pubs across the north especially close to the old canal systems.

A beautiful people living in a beautiful land, coming from a beautiful land. Ive said this for years - Music is one of the ways I can most tell that americans are descended from European stock. Country music - and all of its varients - is especially telling. Both in the sound and style, as well as the content. It is "very Indo-European." Thanks again for the video!

I've noticed you guys get shafted by Hollywood every chance they get. I've seen movies, series and video games depicting you as rapists, cannibals and incest practicioners. At the time (5-10 years back) I didn't have any context and I just assumed it was just the specific characters but now that I know, the depictions seem so purposely devious, it makes me sick.

I wish I would have had a history teacher that would have taught me actual American history and who and where we came from. Thank you for the most informative and enjoyable videos on KZread. I am actually excited each time I see that you have posted a new video and along with sharing these videos with friends I’ll be sure to use them as a learning tool with our grandchildren. Knowledge is power. Also some of the saddest things to me is there is no information about the group of Serbian and Croatian people ( my great grandfather and grandfather as a small child) being one of them immigration to Calumet Michigan to work in the copper mines. Lots of information on the Swedish and Italians along with the Italian hall massacre but nothing on my grandfathers people.

Hey Robert, Thank you. I loved the clogging! My ancestors are mostly from around the North Sea, and I live in the eastern valley of the Appalachians. Unfortunately, I am pretty disconnected from the culture of my people. This video warmed my heart. There aren't a lot of resources out there (that i'm aware of) that celebrate Appalachia culture. I would love to know more, and your work inspires me to reach out and keep searching for more.

Just 3 days ago a wonderful Irish woman n me discussed the English n Irish history. It's a very painful 1, n hard for some to understand the class warfare that's used in all wars. The king took all the food, from oats to sheep. Leaving only failing crops of potatoes. Over taxed, n unarmed. It's sad.

I live up here. It was a good example. Some OM men were from VA and NC. They met here and grouped together to head south. Cleavland used a big horn on the mountain I live on the side of to call up locals heard for many miles. As far as Blowing Rock. They hung Tory loyalists here. Moonshine was big here. I know personally a lot of the bigger families that were in it. We have two legal distilleries in town our favorite local Moonshine style is apple pie. Jr Johnson come out of this area from moonshine. Clan wars were sadly common especially during the civil war due to people on both sides here. Some good books were written by Horace Kephart about the region just south of here. Interesting man. I had a brother to an ancestors that was a travelling separatist preacher in the old days over in KY. We have an annual Bluegrass, folk, American and blues festival here. It is awesome. Merlefest it is called started by Doc Watson. Come and see us and I can hook you up with some apple pie.

Thanks Robert, as a son of the South this is refreshing and true. My Mom was born at Scotts Landing in Coastal NC and my Dad was from Cordele GA. My three Sons were raised in Franklin NC. This heritage is good, true and still very much alive and respected. I wish there were more Americans with these values and respect for others, along with their independence and love of freedom. They have no fear in their desire to be free of oppressive rules and overtaxation. They are very willing to ignore governments holding unsound or frivilous nonsense rules. All in all, a people you can feel comfortable with as neighbors respecting your rights. A great part of America, a great people. PS Scotts not Scotch, a Scott is a person, Scotch is tape or whiskey. Thank you..

Thank you so much, Robert. The people are descendants of poor Scots and Irish that came into the country throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the current musical style is modified from those old world cultures and their musical style. We are leaving Communist Colorado and moving into the area of Mountain City, TN where countless family members live. Can't wait to meet them.
