    I have to say this. As a uad x series apollo interface user. I have been extremely happy with my interfaces. The real time dsp is great the quality of the build is amazing, and the sound quality has been great, That and getting all the native versions added to my account for plugins I've already bought the dsp version of has really just added more longevity to my purchases.

    What a great video; informative and entertaining. I happen to have the interface, but have yet to use the plugins, Console, or anything else on it and still use it as a no-frills audio interface. This is perhaps the most clarifying video so far that I've seen yet that helps for me to know if I should keep it and dive in further, or toss it. I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro, and with it being able to handle lower latency with audio, I wondered if the UAD gear still matters. I'm now convinced, so thank you for that! Look forward to your LUNA overview, yet another piece of UAD software I yet to use, since I use Logic Pro. For Mac.

    Oh thanks so much! Indeed, you have much to experience! Man, I’ll tell you, I just love my Apollo. I didn’t even know at the time of my purchase what it could do as far as Unison preamps. It changes everything. I dove so far into UAD that I ended up buying many UAD plugins and also the Sphere mic just a week ago. That’s an entire OTHER adventure. I’m developing a series of short videos that looks deeper into each Unison preamp model and should help people decide which one they should get-if any. Stay tuned for those. As far as Luna. It’s the best sounding DAW I’ve ever used. However, it’s still in its infancy and it has a ways to go to catch up to Logic Pro or Studio One. The MIDI capabilities are few and there are no stock plugins. It’s great for mixing and mastering for that analog feel, though. Because it does that very well. I’m actually thinking of switching from Studio One to Logic due to some integrations that it has that I need. I’m very close. I’ll always use Luna when I don’t need fancy tools, or for mixing a song, but it’s not where I need it to be yet to fully switch. Thanks for watching!

    @@TheRecordist So now I'm returning to this awesome video because I needed to get more serious about those buttons! Also, I'm enrolled in an audio engineering certification program at the local community college, so it's gotten a bit more real and I have also upgraded some equipment at home....but still believe in the potential of the Twin X. On my wish list as far as request for future videos: the basics of using Console, and the basics of using LUNA, especially with the latter getting updated so much that I've lost track! Thanks again; will be watching this video again.

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    Жыл бұрын

    Haha. Well thank you very much! I think getting into the UA Ecosystem is a great thing-even without the plugins. But they come with several for free and that’s what gets you. It’s the preamp plugins that you load in that make everything sparkle. You’ll get a few for free if you buy one. Now, it can be said that the Apollos aren’t the very best interfaces as far as just the raw preamps in there go. Maybe second best. The RME line has some arguably excellent preamps but it has its own pros and cons. I think if it was me, I’d go Apollo, but try for a X series as the converters are much better. Hope this helps!

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    6 ай бұрын

    Hey there! Thanks very much! Well, the Apollo doesn’t have the world’s best converters, but they’re not the worst. And I’ve heard so many shootouts between the X series and, say, the Burl systems. You’d be hard pressed to tell the difference. Still, if you’re looking for the best, Burl makes great rack units, same with Crane Song, etc. The preamp emulations on the Apollo units are fantastic, however, they require a lot of DSP. So for mixing, you’d quickly run out of DSP without investing in a few satellite units. I don’t know if it’s worth it for that. Every instance of a UAD2 plugin requires more DSP (digital signal processing) that is found inside the unit itself. So if you have 30 tracks and you attempt to put, say, a Neve 1073 on each track, it’ll quickly gobble up your resources in your Twin. So the Apollo Twin X units are best for tracking - using the internal DSP for emulations and FX on the way in. You can put a preamp emulation on there, as well as compressors, and all sorts of other plugins to process in real-time on the way in. However, mixing and mastering in Luna is amazing. Luna (which up until very recently was only available if you have an Apollo) is a Universal Audio DAW that’s seriously impressive for mixing. With the optional built in Neve and API summing, and built in API channel strips (all using your own computer’s resources), are fantastic. It’s Mac only though. You can get Luna to test out without a Mac. It’s free for the basic version and I think with the API console and API summing pro version is $199. With an Apollo, you can also get Neve Summing built in. And with the UA Spark subscription, you can get native versions of many of their top emulations and other plugins. Hope this helps!

But if you’re not invested, and you just want a super clean high quality interface, the RME products are fantastic. For me, I’m heavily invested and also I use Luna a lot. When I was talking about the issues with windows computers, I was referring to the Thunderbolt version. Apparently the USB versions seem to be just fine. But I can’t say for sure. This sounds like a great question for Drew at UA. Perhaps opening a ticket with this question could give you a solid answer that you can go back to if needed after you purchase. In the meantime, if you’re on Facebook, try joining the UAD Apollo Users group and using the search function to find the plethora of Windows users with similar problems. I went through the exact same problem as you and I would recommend getting a different interface if you're only working on Windows. Get an RME or MOTU and never look back. Also, don't bother with that useless UA "support" forum. They will just pretend these issues aren't widely known in some vain attempt to delay you refunding the product, or they'll just outright gaslight you for wanting your $1k interface that was advertised work on Windows _to actually work on Windows._ 😂 Moral of the story, don't use UA stuff if you're not on a mac.

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s a great question. Does it sound like this? kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zm2nlKivZJXKY6g.html If so, it’s changing impedance and/or sample rates. It makes that physical click. You can force it to make that sound by changing the sample rate in CONSOLE or by plugging in a quarter inch guitar cable into the front of the Apollo. It’s weird that it’s doing that randomly. But if you’re changing between sample rates (like 44.1kHz and 48kHz) then that’s why it’s doing that. If not, then you might want to open a ticket with support.

    Hey there. If you’re going out of the preamp and into the Apollo and using line in (which is correct), then the phantom power will definitely not switch on, since it’s designed to power a mic - not a preamp. You should instead only be using the phantom power on the preamp. If the preamp has no phantom power, and you have a condenser mic, then you need to ditch the preamp and use the Apollo preamps on mic mode. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    @@ryancohenmusic yes. You definitely do NOT want to use phantom power when you’ve got a preamp connected. You only need one phantom power and that is on the preamp you choose to use. Outputting phantom power back into a line out of your preamp could damage your preamp or Apollo if you’re using TRS 1/4 inch cables. So, in summary: 1. Only the device you plug your mic into should provide phantom power to the mic. 2. The Apollo (when used to receive the output of your preamp) will then act as only an analog to digital converter. The preamp is bringing your mic up to line level and passing that appropriate level onto your Apollo where it’s converted to digital and then into your computer. Mic --> preamp --> Apollo --> computer. NOT: Mic --> preamp computer. Hope this helps. Haha

    Hey. Well that depends. If you require the DSP versions of UAD plugins (as opposed to the native versions), then you will need more DSP chips in the Apollo. This can be achieved either by purchasing a separate satellite device that adds more processing, or by purchasing an Apollo with more chips like a quad or x6 or something. But honestly, these days, computers are much more powerful and can handle many native plugin instances. UAD has the Spark subscription, which gives you many of their greatest hits in native format. In that case, you can run as many plugins as your computer will handle. If only wanting to run DSP processing inside the Apollo, you will not be able to get many plugins working simultaneously in the Apollo Twin Duo. Example: maybe 8 instances of Neve 1073. Or two instances of Capitol Chambers, etc. Here’s a DSP requirement chart: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/215262223-UAD-2-DSP-Chart Hope this helps!

    @@38svn hey. No worries. They sound the exact same. The X series has upgraded preamps and converters. This makes all the X interfaces a higher quality than the regular Apollo Twins etc. But they’re the same. Whether duo or quad, it’s got the same preamps and converters so you will not be upgrading the sound quality if you went with the quad. You will only be doubling the DSP (CPU chips). So instead of two Sharc chips, you’ll have four. And this in no way changes the sound. It only adds more processing power for the plugins.

    Hey. I hope I understand your question properly. The Apollo I reviewed here is a thunderbolt 3. This requires a Thunderbolt port on your computer and a Thunderbolt cable. It will not work with a usb-c cable. It has to be a thunderbolt 3 cable. I know it looks like it would work but it does not. And it doesn’t come with the cable. You have to buy that extra. Apollo Twin X Vs Apollo Solo Same audio quality?? which one is better quality

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    Жыл бұрын

    Technically, the Twin X is higher quality because it has higher quality d/a and a/d converters. The preamps are the same in the solo and the twins all the way up to the X8 etc. The Solo has only one Sharc DSP chip and thus cannot run many plugins at the same time. But if you’re using it for VO work or the like, the solo would be all you need. So the answer to your question is that the X is better quality audio than the Solo but only with the digital/analog conversion.

    so using LUNA on my Mac can do the DSP stuff instead of the Apollo (hardware) and its console (software)? if so, why would I want to spend a lot more cash for the 4 processor Apollo, and not just buy the 2 processor Apollo? also, didn't Universal Audio just make its plugins native, so they can be used with any DAW, not just LUNA or the Apollo console?

  • @TheRecordist

    Hi Charles. Those are great questions. Luna doesn’t convert all Apollo plugins to native. Only the ones that are available native. And there are only a small selection of UAD native plugins released so far. You can test them with Spark. But Luna WILL make a couple of Luna plugins work natively (Neve or API Summing and the tapes). I expect that UA is beginning to move more into native for the future due to M1 and M2 chips etc. But for tracking and printing immediately, it’s great. Depending on which UAD plugins you enjoy, and where you would use them, the dual may be just fine. It’s up to your individual needs. Hope this helps!

    @@charlespatrick8650 yep I totally understand. It’s a lot. I have a twin duo. Basically, I’ll track with a chain like SSL unison preamp, then maybe a c-suite c-vox, then an 1176 or a Distressor compressor followed by an LA2A compressor. All in a chain that’s printing right into my DAW. When I use the Sphere mic, I might add the Sphere plugin as well. I have just enough DSP for that. Some plugins are light on DSP and others are more intensive (like Capitol Chambers). But that’s my main chain and then when I’m done that track, I unload those plugins and I’m back to zero again. So I can load whatever chain and print that chain to the track-committing it. When I mix, I will usually get a track perfect and freeze or bounce in place to free up the DSP again and print what I’ve done. But that’s only if I need to use DSP again. I have a spark subscription and that has many of the native mixing plugins that I like. But Capitol Chambers and Ocean Way are unmatched reverbs and they’re only available using DSP, so whatever I choose, I know that at the end, I want it freed up for those plugins. Aside from those reverbs, I mostly only bought UAD plugins that I intend to track with only. That way I’m never running out.

    Truth, no, they are indeed just plug-ins, an emulation, they don’t sound like the real deal hardware units to anyone who’s used the real deal units. 2nd, not one of the hardware units sounds exactly like another identical unit next to it, the variance in values of the electronic components assure infinite sonic character changes, that said every single instance of the millions of people that use these plugins SOUND EXACTLY IDENTICAL, now you know why modern music has a homogenized milk toast sound, no character at all, buy hardware and use it to find a unique sound, daws and plugs are BS marketing schemes to corral ur $ into their pockets, nothings changed and u r farther from unique

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    I don’t think unique is the goal for these. While I agree with you on most of what you say, you must remember that “just get the hardware” is impossible for some people-even if they’re exceptionally talented. And some of the emulations would be downright impossible for most people. On my channel, I must always remember that not everyone will be able to afford high-end gear, but that doesn’t mean that they should quit creating. We can all do anything with anything if we know how to work with what we have. I’d love to talk only U87 Vintage, 414 vintage, Manley Reference, C12, C800G, and higher mics-and call all the Lewitts and Rødes and Aston mics junk, and go full snob, but that’s not the world we live in. And all of us can only do what we can do with the limitations we have. Do you have an outboard preamp/channel strip suggestion that is high end but affordable that I can get and review on my channel? If so, I’d love to hear about it. Thanks for watching!
