Apollo the Cockatiel plays his version of Peek-a-boo!

He learned this before he even learned any songs.

    Glad to share! Apollo has since learned "Don't worry, be happy" and "Happy Birthday", which he sang to me non-stop during my birthday week. I will have to post updated videos soon as I get the time!

    Baby is not a good talker, but he is a VERY good whistler. Takes about 4 weeks or so to teach him a new tune, and he will get it exactly right over time. He does a pitch perfect imitation of the microwave tones (and he'll do it as soon as I reach for the buttons, which tickles me).

    How did you teach him? Did you food reward him or just like repeat it over and over? Honestly this is the cutest thing I've seen a cockatiel do.

  • @radams36

    @radams36

    OTOH, parrots are some of the few birds with appreciable senses of taste, so they do respond well to treat rewards. Cockatiels will often do what you want them to just because they figure out that you do want them to. I occasionally treat Baby, but not for particular behaviors. He still tries to do what I want as best he understands, just to please me.

    The only word my 'tiel, Baby, knows is Peek-A-Boo. Apollo enunciates better, but it's otherwise quite similar.

  • @KrisPen2012

    Oh that's cool! Yes I was told they don't speak many words, but rather love to sing. Apollo can now also say his name, and he's learning "Hola", but doesn't have it that clearly yet.

  • @radams36

    Kris P There was actually a purpose in playing Peek-A-Boo with Baby - with humans, it's part of how babies learn object permanence, and Baby completely freaks out when I leave the room. I had hoped he would also learn from Peek-A-Boo, but he just learned to say it. He still goes off the rails every time I walk out of the room. Really sweet, but kind of sad, too. His cage has to stay covered all day when I'm at work because if he sees I'm not around, he will get very upset.

    Richard Adams wow. that's really interesting. Apollo actually won't play peekaboo anymore with me. Not sure if he's outgrown it or something. He will sometimes randomly say "peekaboo", but when I put my hand in front of him, he acts like he has no idea what to do lol

  • @radams36

    Kris P He may very well have outgrown it or gotten bored with it. .Parrots are smart enough that anything repeated has a chance of becoming tedious for them. Dr. Irene Pepperberg had challenges around this when she worked with her African Grey, the famous Alex. But you'll always have the video!
