@lidelacreativelab I, for one, think that bird lives with people who love it and care for it. Apollo has a rare brain for his species and it's lucky that his full potential is being realized. What should he be doing instead? What "bird things," I'm curious?

@@olgaknowsbestofficial he enjoys mimicking humans. that's what parrots do. and since he can talk, he can better interact with his owners, which is good, since parrots are very social. he's still a bird, just one that has been taught to listen to and talk like humans. nothing sinister here.

i’m sure he wants to stay longer outside, to feel the sun on his feathers. One minute outside and rapidly inside is nothing. Of course he will enjoy the sun and the fresh air also - like we do.

The fact that these birds can use human language _within it's proper context_ is absolutely mind blowing

In studies it has been shown that African Greys (Apollo’s species) have the brain capacity of a 4-5 year old human, with the verbal capacity of a 2-3 year old human 🙂 They are very clever! 😊

Oh yeah, he's thinking, "I got these people to take me outside, how do I get them to get me a million dollars in small bills?" Never underestimate an african gray. I know of two grays who live together, who have fun by calling the dog and then laughing when it comes to them. They live for fun.

@@olgaknowsbestofficial jfc, can you chill? Apollo isn't anywhere near his species' native habitat. Being outside is not always the best. Especially when there are birds of prey that would see Apollo as little more than a chew toy. Wanna grand-stand actual animal cruelty? There are people all over social media with heavily inbred dogs for you to yell at. Apollo has tons of enrichment, healthy food, and attentive caretakers *who are working toward getting him more time outside- the very thing you are insulting them over.* Siddown. You ain't sinless.

He doesn't understand what the sentence means, he just repeats it.

You can see Apollo was a bit nervous with being outside, but I feel it’s expected when taken out of his comfort zone. He will get better about it the more often he goes.

I’m glad to see you taking your bird outside and walking around the perimeter of the house. Not only does he get fresh air and sunshine, but he’ll now know what HOME looks like in case he ever gets loose. Many birds are lost from an open door and can’t find their way home because they don’t know what it looks like.

I read that if your bird gets lost you’re supposed to put the birdcage outside and somewhere high up so that the bird can find it and go inside...

My parents lost their African Grey for 3 days, he knew there was a swimming pool in the yard as we would look at us when we were in the swimming pool, so some lady living about 500m away called the "animal center" saying there was a weird grey bird on the side of her pool, so my father got there and that was him, and got it back home.

That’s awesome I’m glad he made it back safely to your parents My cockatiel flew away one day and it wasn’t even the first time She knew what the house looked like and even came back But one day she decided to fly off for good… it’s been 2 years now and I live in the north so there are brutal winters…

@@thetwilightpug8778 I'm in Canada, currently -10°C, goes much lower in february. so yeah he flew away during summer for 3 days, he never tried during winter, but he did once in early spring, but I found him in a tree a couple of streets away (hint, there are no telephone ringing in trees) and we managed to make him come down to us with almonds. He was being bullied by crows, and the night might have been too cold for him.

bit late as this is 5 months old but i love that he continuously gets you closer back to the house when he wants to return. "pour water" to get you back to the pond/hose, "glass" to get you to walk back to the house's window, and then "let's go back". just smth i personally noticed and it could be nothing but i think if that's the case with him, he's SO good at problem solving

I had an African Gray when I lived in Nigeria. One day I took him outside and he did not like it at all. He bit me and when we went back inside, he turned his back on me, an ultimate insult. Apollo did not look happy. It will take time in short doses but he will get used to the great outdoors. You are such a loving handler. He is in good hands.

I can imagine. Their fear of snakes and raptors is bad enough but in Nigeria there are plenty of other animals that will eat a gray if they catch one.

The little sound at 0:47 was so cute lol. He was probably remembering the last time he saw rain drops while looking out the window

One of the most interesting things I think, other than the fact he can recognize objects, is how birds in captivity pick up phone noises. Had a green wing a long time ago that would ring like an old analog phone.

I know that when Apollo bites, it hurts..lol. My Max, a Double yellow headed Amazon Parrot has bitten me before and it hurts. But Apollo gets frustrated like we all get. He's beautiful and so smart. He makes me laugh. I love him like I love my own Parrot. God made them beautiful with colors. They are so fascinating. You guys are awesome too. Apollo is blessed to have you both.

Just became a subscriber. Love this video! I think you need to wait for permission from Apollo, before you take the harness off. Let him recover from the outside stimulation for a minute. State your intention and then slowly take it off.

African Greys are incredibly beautiful birds. I love them so. The way I love them responsibly is to love them from afar because I know I can't give them what they need 😓

You're a braver person than me, Sir! Apollo is adorbs btw. We have an African Grey, Dinga, that's been in our family since I was five, he's thirty five now. It would be an act of sheer suicide for one of us to try to put a harness on Dinga. He doesn't like to be handled, unless it's on HIS terms only and he's not nice, frequently. We love him though and he's spoiled rotten, grouchy and grumpiness included.

@@olgaknowsbestofficial Umm, Olga, this is filmed in America. That's an African Grey Parrot. African. Okay? If they "put him outside" he would die from starvation or predators because he is a.) on the wrong continent to survive on his own and b.) a hand raised bird that has no concept of living outside. If he were a Cardinal, Mockingbird, or Blue Jay it might be different and I would agree that those wild Native birds should be free. Not a tropical, hand reared bird, that has lived his whole life in captivity. That would be the equivalent of dropping a human toddler off in the African Congo, where the parrots are from, and say "good luck kid!"

So nice to see you having a harness on him !!!!! Great job !!! I'd love to take my Amazons outside but no way would I be able to get a harness on them !!!!....Maybe when they were babies.... but definately not now...I often see videos of parrots outside without harnesses and dont know how people can trust them not to fly away......even clipped some can still fly off. I guess that's why people lose them..Apollo is so cool.....he did great going outside today !!!😊

@@flamingomtn my sister just lost her Goffin Cockatoo......he"s 35 yrs old . He was out loose and flew out the door when someone was leaving..he had been clipped by her vet 4 weeks before ...She just moved to a rural area a week before......not even a sighting..😪

Have an Amazon, he loves to go outside in his tree, and comes back whenever he wants, only time he flew away was when a cat tried to attack him, fortunately my neighbors catched him and had a very intense conversation 🤣

That was overwhelming for Apollo having spent months inside before this little trip to the garden. He clearly shows uncomfort being outside while handling all the unkowns. His instinct or knowledge tells him that he can expect danger from above and particularly from below. The way he is peeping around says it all...and then the roaring noises from every where plus completely unknown sounds hitting his ears.. .the short while outside must have been shocking for him. No wonder that he refused to take pistachios and started to bite every now and then.

Holy crap, he can actually say what he wants or he does not want they r talented animals and his so cute 😍

You’re so patient and kind

The best way to do it is to let him chill on the porch for a little while a few times a week so that for a couple weeks so he can get used to being outside again, and then take him to the yard for an extended amount of time here and there. Eventually you can take him around the block a couple times a week so he can get used to leaving the house and then anywhere. Just gradually becoming a traveling burd , I think giving him too much too quick might actually do the opposite of what your trying to teach because it can overwhelm him.. just some advice, I hope you read this cuz I care about that brilliant bird and want him to be outside and enjoy the fresh air wind sun trees people other birds and the world

You can tell he was really taking things in and then quickly assessed that 'outdoors' is just too dangerous. I like how he says "Glass" (wanting to get back to his window). I also like how quickly you realized that: 1) he doesn't want to be near the ground outside and 2) he wanted to go back into the house.

I love watching how you guys show and teach him new things

This takes so much patience and time. These are a major commitment. People have no idea. So many birds, pets, in bad homes with no understanding of what it takes.

Its interesting to see him be content with not having to be wild. I know a lot of people talk about birds wanting to be free but he didnt want to fly around and he was fine just seeing the outside. Its a strange thing to see but its also very interesting.

They say that with cats and dogs you might wanna let them be with a harness also inside for some time, to let them get used to it. Birds are different sure but maybe being fussy about taking it off means he needs to adjust to it

teach the parrot to come to you when you blow a whistle with some very characteristic sound and then offer it food, since when birds are not seen, they call each other with sounds. In this case, if the parrot gets lost in a wooded area, it is very easy for it to blow the whistle and fly to where the whistle is (especially if it also feels hungry).

Apollo and his sisters are learning a recall.

He did really well for his first outdoor excursion. Our parrotlette totally freaked out when we tried to put on the harness.

I used to let my Blue Fronted Amazon go outside a lot, he always loved it. Back when I lived in California, I drove him down to Dana Point Harbor and just walked around with him sitting on my hand. He would say hello to ppl as they walked by staring at him. A Seagull was sitting on a post nearby. He spread his wings and flapped them a couple times, which did freak my bird (Travis) out a bit, but I reassured him that all was well and that was it. Other than that, we had a great time.

I love how the red harness goes well with his red tail feathers ❤

I remember this process with my big ole greenwing macaw, and let me tell you…you got it easier than me my friend 😂. Mine has four times the bite pressure of a pit bull dog, and three times the beak size of a grey. She shreds untreated 2x4 boards for fun. She hated and was overstimulated by the harness too, although she likes to go outside. She gets hyper the same way over it. We decided it was easier to just build her a covered aviary on the back of the house. The bottom is thick concrete pavers, the bottom of the sides is metal panels (sometimes used as roofing) screwed on to wood framework covered in PVC pipe slip covers (treated wood so it doesn’t rot, but covered in one of those thick white pvc pipes to cover the dangerous wood not safe to be chewed). The upper part of the cage is made of dog kennel panels including the top of the cage. This made the cage tall enough by putting the kennel on top of metal walls. They are powder coated and thick enough to keep her from breaking it, and everything dangerous is kept out. We put a metal roof on it made of the same panels. There’s no outside door so no one can get in. We take her into the cage through a secondary door inside the house that we butted the cage up against. We usually only put her out there if we are home anyway, but it’s definitely safe enough that she can be in it while we’re not home. We have all manner of creatures around our house because we live in a forested area and nothing ever gets her. If foxes, coyotes, cats, dogs, hawks, etc can’t get into this cage-nothing can. They’ve tried and failed.

Apollo Did so well... My grey is always kinda nervous when being outside, but thats just how greys are.. Always seeing threats everywhere. As long as you know, when the bird starts to be overwhelmed, is everything fine... I saw how your hands shook :D .. Taking the harness off of them is the worst part ever, I was never looking forward to do that after any of our walks... my fingers still hurt :D

It is, they have worked long hours with Apollo. They have put lots of hard work and it shows. Apollo is so smart. My daughter stood and said her name Holly over and over. Until one day she pulled up out front in her car, got out and my Parrot said, Holly! Whose Holly...lol. They hear us even when we think they dont..lol
