I'm an exiled Englishman living in rural New Zealand. As you know, neither governments, UK nor NZ, are keen for their folks to own guns. I live on 3.5 acres of land and am a keen archer. A simple bow in experienced hands can cause mayhem to those intent on harm. I also own a gnarly powerful crossbow as well. Flaxen Saxon. Va Victus!

Dude, you chose the wrong country to which to exile yourself. NZ and Australia are just colonial clones of England. They never actually cut the umbilical.

I feel bad for all of you living in countries that ban guns. I have lots of edged weapons, compound bows, crossbows, But in my state..NC we can own most anything. I have a safe full of AR's, Shotguns, pistols.. We wll never give up our rights lile you had to. Be safe. Stay safe. Keep an edge on your blades and train daily.

Also. If you consider going full medieval. Look toward multishot crossbows. Yes it's a thing. Yes, they have quick reload clips.

Great advice my friend, I live in the UK and of course over here firearms are not easy to legally own or have in your house for protection. I’m a Knife and Sword collector so I have a large number of edged weapons that are legal to own but not to take outside in public places. I would recommend Cold Steel Machetes or Cobra Steel Short Swords if your on a budget. Most budget priced ‘Real’ Swords are made to brake and bend if used as a weapon so don’t waste your money. However unless your protecting yours or another person’s life just get decent home insurance and keep your head down and call the police. 😉.

    1) If it's stainless steel it ain't for real. Any blade over 12'' or so may break easily if one attempts to use it for real. 2) If you plan on being able to use a sword, get training. With out training a sword can be as dangerous to the wielder as to an opponent. 3) Try out different swords until you find the style that fits.

@@clydeadair3809 I totally agree with you, however although yes the will break or bend that first hit would hurt someone not protecting themselves and of course if the point is adequate then they are a stab risk. Any argument regarding the pros and cons of any edged tool or even wall hanger isn’t for us as we know how to respect the tool and aren’t the people who are abusing them or using them as weapons. Thanks for the feedback it was very well received. Stay safe and stay sharp my friend 👍.

The Gladius or Xiphos make a lot of sense because compact stabbing weapons have an economy of motion that is absent in chopping/slashing specific weapons. They were designed for use in shield formations, where there was likely to be no room to swing a weapon. To this end, they were intentionally made shorter than the bearer's arm so that the tip could be drawn all the way back to the front of the body when at contact distances. Pressed up against a door trying to deny entry, inside a narrow hallway, or maneuvering inside a stairwell, there may not be room to swing a tomahawk, machete, or kukri. But even at grappling distance or hugging inside a phone booth, you can still draw your weapon hand backwards, until the tip of your gladius is near the front of your body, and then plunge it forward into the body of your opponent. Stabbing attacks are more lethal. Most large blood-bearing organs and vital structures are located deep in the torso or on the inside of large skeletal structures to protect them from superficial damage. Even standard clothing is surprising effective at absorbing damage from slashing attacks. But a large stabbing weapon like a gladius, xiphos, or bowie can inflict a lethal wound through clothing with comparatively less expended energy and time than a slashing weapon. Remember, the quickest way from A to B is a straight line. A thrust is a linear attack and will always be faster and more effecient than a sweeping rotational attack, like a slash or chop. Short, compact, effecient stabbing motions in close quarters are extremely effective. A thrust from a broad, doubled edged short sword will likely cause more trauma than a handgun round, and a sword never runs out of ammo or jams. Inside a certain distance, you should never bring a gun to a sword fight.

I have been playing around with my cold steel spetnaz shovel. It sure seems like a good weapon as well, fast in the hand, sharp all around and hits like an axe. Throws really well, also blocks like a shield as well. If you have ever played tennis or raquet ball then you already have some of the skills ingrained in muscle memory for hitting fast moving ojects. Just thinking that having a "sapper" in one hand and your Gladius in another... wow! what a combo that would make! LOL

Yes I have seen more then one person talking about using a Roman Gladius type sword or machete. I have the Cold Steel Gladius Machete. But an even better one that many have talked about is the United Cutlery Combat Commander Gladiators sword/machete. The steel, and it is high carbon steel, is better then the Cold Steel version, of which I also have. And I prefer the fit and finish. Plus, with a short sword/machete, you could use a second weapon, or a make shift shield. If your going to get a machete, then you might want to reshape it for stabbing.

2 things - if you've played around with that needle tip gladius - I bet u poked yourself a few times (or got it stuck on your clothes) - 2nd, unless u can STAB with that machete - it's NOT gonna do much except scare someone or piss them off - cos it's not gonna stop them - mostly STABS stop - research it my friend - I'll take a rattan stick than that machete (for self defense) any day.

My go to weapon for home defense and an "apocalypse" is probably a Machete. This gladius looks good but it's only 420 stainless. I get a little nervous that a blade of that low quality might fracture. Machetes are made for abuse. A good one will chop and even be able to stab. There are lots of options on shape and steel, but all are made to last!
