The renowned mambabatok (Kalinga tattooist) of her generation, Apo Whang-Od kept the thousand-year-old tradition of batok (traditional Kalinga tattoo) alive for decades, starting as early as 16 years old when she became a tattoo artist.
Batok uses black ink that comes from the soot scraped from a clay pot mixed with water, and carefully applied to the skin using a thorn from a calamansi or pomelo tree.
