You actually think the piano moving back and forth would create panning and reverb effects like that?? If it did it would be very minimal - the reason is of course that the PIANO HAS BEEN AMPLIFIED. So all the effects you hear are most certainly electronically induced. 😬

  • @UdumbaraMusic

@@AllSven Stand at the side of a road. Listen to a car pass you. You'll notice a panning effect. It's a remotely controlled Yamaha Clavinova, so yes, it is amplified... From the piano itself. So if you were in the audience you'd notice it, and they likely have mics set up to capture this audio considering the fact the hall has a huge impact on the sound, so you would likely not have a digital recording because it would be, well, a waste of a good acoustics. Not that far fetched or implausible.

I was at this gig. TBH it was a bit underwhelming at the time. But it did age well... There was a first piece before this video started with a remote orchestra. A bunch of classical (I assume) musicians who played when the big screen in front of them told them to. I don't remember seeing Aphex at the show at any point. Although in this video he is there at the end. Weird. My memory was that it was strange he wasn't at this significant event. Maybe there's something in that... The hanging piano was actually really epic. The sound of it swinging sounded awesome in the acoustics of the Barbican. You can hear it in the recording a little but it was the best part of the show in person. It made the sound of the piano warp as it swung, pretty epic. The third song (the light against the swinging balls) looked great in the theatre. It was more about the light everywhere than the music. Trippy. But fuck did it go on for a long time. I found it funny how it went on forever but I'm sure it felt like "pretentious wank" for a lot of the crowd after about 10 minutes. Overall, the crowd were largely confused. A majority seemed like they went to the Barbican for every concert and just didn't get what was happening. All said, it could have had a higher music to art ratio. Even at the time I loved crazy music. Even if it took 100 listens before it ceases to be painful and you "get" the vibe. This gig wasn't really that. It was more art than music. I think I get what Richard D James was trying to do, but it felt - and still feels - like it was an experiment to play with the stereotypical audience of that place. And hell it probably did its job. But for me it was cool as a thing. But could have done with more music. At least as much art and show, but more music. Given everyone I spoke to at the time, I think even if there was a 30 second aphex drop beat at the end of the show, it would have been perfect. But there wasn't. If you hadn't heard Aphex before that gig, you'd have no idea what it was about. Maybe that was the point. If it was, I'm not sure what your point is. But either way, I'm glad I was there.

I've read all the comments. People give so many interpretations on the swinging piano. Richard is known for invoking so many interpretations, opinions and meanings to people listening to his music. For me, the swinging piano feels like something you would see in a music video or a concert. Some concerts have these types of mechanisms like the swinging piano playing "aisatsana". Some concerts have suspended and elevated platforms, like Rihanna's Super Bowl Halftime Show. That's kind of like the same thing with the swinging piano as it's in a suspended platform.

I did the lasers for this performance, so glad I was involved- shame the camera shutter speed made the lasers pulse, in reality they were constantly on, although it did add another whole layer of FX to the the footage which I think was used to great effect in the edit. 2 x 10w x Arctos Lasers rigged in the upper circle with I think 20 hot beams down onto the balls , nice bit of kit back in the day...I loved working at the Barbican such a amazing building.
