We all have to appreciate, there must have been many study and research hours invested in this event. You have developed a substantial (experience-based) knowledge pool on these engines.

The good old "sprag" clutch is a marvellous piece of engineering. For the most part they are trouble free. I have never had to replace one on all the motorcycles that I have owned. Glad to see that you resolved all the sync errors. We used to have carburettors years ago. Now everything is fuel injected and you just about need a science degree to understand the blasted ECU's. Ugh!

Most engines that I work on ,without active valve timing, only use the cam sensor during starting. I have noticed that some will start after extended cranking when you let off the starter, and then run fine until you shut them down.

This is a good lesson that all anomalies to expected operation should be investigated. Good troubleshooting.

I think you should put the new parts in the airplane; not an engine on a bench.... .. a spare engine of unknown condition; glade you finally put the parts in the airplane. Did you notice that the battery voltage with 200k errors was 11.7 and ran better at 12.3, but no errors at 13.2v

Not sure about the AEM ECU's but most ECU's on the automotive side and also on John Deere products will eventually start with just the cam or crank sensor reading correctly. You just have to spin the engine over longer for the ECU to figure out the correct timing

Bryan, i did not hear or catch the jist of the clutch issues..........Am I correct to assume this was a installation caused problem? I mean it begs why the engine ran with the wires crossed so that did not help but why wouldn't this have been noticed with the detailed engine logs from AEM device readouts..............I really like that setup. I don't currently have a method for seeing such detailed logs from my RX1 installation. But then it just runs and runs over 5 yrs. with no problems with the engine. Great video's. Thanks for the updates regardless. Great diagnostics Too!

The clutch issue was caused by the continuous long cranking to get it to start. The starting system isn't really designed to spin the gearbox and the propellor weight, so my theory is that the hard starting caused the starter clutch to fail. The hard starting was caused by the crank sensor polarity being wired backwards. It was discovered in the engine data logs, but we had to be looking for it. It isn't really something you would normally check I suppose. Of course we will be now.

@@BowenAero Thankx for the response. My conclusion than would be the hard starting which lead to the clutch failure was precipitated by the repeatedly unnecessary long starts as opposed to instant starts with the wiring in a correct state. I do remember the other Bryan mentioning this in his writings during discovery engine testing. It's always the lil glitches that rear it's ugly lil head! So really the Apex is still a reliable platform in spite of the glitches that pop up! Good! Many happy flying hours to you and for me to enjoy watching! Blue Skies!!!

As others have said thanks for the transparency. I don't see how your hard starting would be linked to that. The flywheel is keyed to the crank so they have to be in agreement. I would think more likely a bad Hal sensor, maybe one that work intermittently? Or with it slipping was it not turning it over fast enough?

Brian really needs to add some monitoring to the ECU and show some warning if the system is seeing crank sensor errors. The idea that you flew this around for hundreds of hours without knowing that your crank/cam was having a timing issue is pretty humbling. I wonder what other errors are logged but not showing up on the screen.
