Excellent .. thank you... I've been into photography around 10yrs.. started on a Canon Rebel always used manual... graduated to an a7II 4yrs ago.. man the settings were sooooo complex... I now have the a7III... been practicing and have recently had an epiphany mastering the ISO... game changer for me... but there's so much to learn... so the S... A... P... buttons were alien.. however now I have gained more confidence looking at these options are my next challenge in my evolution....

I've been shooting manual for a long time and thought it was the best way to shoot but lately i've been looking for a way to have better control and this video really shows me that having complete control all the time can also be a downfall, so allowing the very expensive camera to do some of the work is not a bad thing, NOT AT ALL. So thank you for this video, very helpful.

James, I really liked this video and got a lot out of it. I did, however, think that there were 2 things that you could have at least mentioned in the landscape portion. Those would be that when using a tripod turn Steady Shot off and when using such a slow shutter speed to use a wired or wireless remote or a 2 second timer to reduce camera shake. I realize that these points are not part of the main story (Aperture Priority), but could have been mentioned in a second or 2. But, other than that, great info!

First I want to say, Thank You! Your video was very informative and easy to fallow. I only have one question about your f4 & f2.8 suggestions for your portraits. I know that getting good Bokeh outdoors is one good reason for shooting wide open with portraits, but was there any other reason? In the past, I have had a Love / Hate relationship with shallow depth of field. My Nikon D850's autofocus is "hit or mis" with shallow depth of field in studio. Outdoors, no problem. Sometimes my modeling Lights aren't bright enough for my Autofocus. For portraits in the studio, I have had to mark the floor for my subjects and have them sit for careful focusing and keep my studio ambient lights bright while my ISO is low in order to keep my cameras autofocus working consistently. So I end up shooting f5.6 - f11

Hey Mikey. Thanks so much, man! Great question, and sure Aperture Priority works just fine with a manual lens. That G85 is an awesome camera, especially for video! You will love it!

I noticed during the portrait portion, as you moved the camera around from light to dark areas your shuttle speed stayed constant at 1/125. The challenge for me in Aperture priority has been the constantly changing shutter speed. Is there some specific setting that locks the shutter speed in? I set my iso min ss and all yet my ss is all over the map usually too low to freeze slight movements or compensate for shake common in portrait/wedding/event work. Thanks for the vid.🙏🏾💪🏾

I would love to get your Cheat Sheets for Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority. I first learned about you and watched several of your videos yesterday. You have simplified the process in your description, but would love to have the Cheat Sheets to refer to in the field. Thanks!

Thank you for this video. I’m learning quite a lot. Just one question when I put my camera in AV mode what about the switch on my lens? Do I keep it on manual or auto focus? Thanks

Can I ask - if I’m doing a KZread video - I set to aperture priority - I want my f to be 1/1.6 but then don’t I need to shutter speed to stay at 2x the fps rather than moving around?

See I was already using manual but had never used aperture priority or shutter priority and I found I was missing shots sometimes especially in faster moving subjects or fleeting moments so I wanted to learn more about it...

Picket up photography after 4 years,.. Building a house and 2 kids you know... Today I borrowed a 2.8 27 70 lens and. Shot the two kids in M mode. It was a disaster, but a real eye opener. There where just too much variables to control with two dynamic kids. Your video explained EXACTLY what I was looking for. Excited to try again tomorrow and grow slowly towards M mode. Thank you.

Hey, recently I have been trying to film my band performing in fairly low light. My a7 iv work great on auto but the aperture is always auto set to 1.4. It looks great but most of the shot is out of focus. I would like to keep the quality but have the whole band in focus. Do you have any advise? thanks

Hello. I’ve been doing a lot of photography over the years. And since I don’t do it frequently I forget a lot of the settings. And now w those new camera like my Sony A7rlll so complicated. If you don’t practice a lot. I also do a lot in manual but now moving more to street photography. I’m trying to figure out best setting. I will try your technique of a priority. F4 speed to 125. Since hand held and auto iso. Will see. Any other tip for street p..? Thanks John

Great tips James thank you, When I am in APriority, my ISO indoors routinely goes to 25600. I dont want noisy pics. They are also over exposed. What am I doing wrong? I can play with exposure comp. but why must I? I thought these cameras were "smart."

Great video, well explained just one thing to bear in mind when setting a minimum shutter speed on your camera Generally speaking, using the standard rule of thumb is to make the minimum shutter speed equal to the maximum focal length of your lense when hand-holding your camera. For example, if you are shooting with a 200mm lens then you want to keep your minimum shutter speed at 1/200 sec or above to avoid any blur occurring from camera shake. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYiIqatviqjZirA.html

I've got a point shoot Nikon , P100.. basic. I like A mode, staring out hand held street landscape (trees buildings, sidewalks etc) and some street "moments" photography. however the bright sky in California seems to blowout (above the horizon). Sky too light, shadows too dark. do I need to move up to an DSLR to correct this?
