While primitive, this era of gaming is golden for me. Modern AAA games are *seriously* lacking.

That's why I think it's so awesome that we're currently getting a lot of remakes from this generation. Games like Glover, the Gex trilogy, Turok 3, Tomb Raider trilogy just to name a few. I wish that this game would be remade as well. Games from this generation need to be remade more than any other because they were limited by the hardware with horrible draw distance, fog, and stuff like that

7:55 - The monster tree can be defeated on your first run of the jungle level. All you need is the stun club. You have to swing the club and hit each of the tree's "hands" which it will pull away from you and hold back for a few seconds. Once both are being held back, its body (the tree trunk) is open for attack, either with individual stun club strikes or repeated strikes by spinning the club around in a circle. This window where it's open for attacks is short though, because it will quickly slam its "hands" together in front of it, hurting Spike and pushing him back. The tree has a lot of health so defeating it and releasing the monkey inside will take several cycles - that's why there's a cookie jar nearby to replenish your health.

the crawl mechanic with the music dampening was a clever way to indicate that you've become quieter, especially from my perspective since I wasn't a well-read kid nor did I have English as my mother language (so if it was explained somewhere like in a manual, I would've missed it), the music dampening instantly made me realize the crawl's use. Also, I want to share a comment I posted in Emcee's ape escape video: this game doesn't only bring nostalgia to the game but also reminds me of the nature, toys, fun, and such that was part of the activity I had with my friends and family. When it rains, I smell the "Primordial Ooze" from the early 2000s. When I got a new toy as a kid, it was basically a "new gadget!". Hot days with high energy were like "Molten lava". If you didn't notice, everything in quotes is music tracks from the game. This game was pretty much how it feels like to be a kid without a smartphone but with toys and outdoor activities. I remember controlling my friend's RC car, using hula hoops, shooting with a slingshot, going swimming with all my clothes on, catching bugs with a net, and taking an expandable wooden cloth hanger and imagining it being the magic/power punch.

That comment's spot on. And you're right about the crawl. It shows rather than tells. You don't see stuff like that in games too often, even at the time.

The real final boss is pretty good. It’s basically the boss using its version of your gadgets. And the fight has you use all of them against him using all of the skills you learn in one final test of a battle

This is a favorite game of mine from the PS1 era. There is a point I couldn't beat a later level when I was a kid because it was just so difficult to get certain Apes, but I always come back to it. BTW, you beat that tree by smacking both his hands with the stun club after he hits the ground, then hit the tree repeatedly until it blows up

There's so many little touches and secrets in this game. Comments like yours showcase that. I feel bad I didn't cover it all, but I also don't want to DEEP dive on games. Just medium dive lol. I did wish I covered the real final boss battle though. I'd like to revisit my older videos in the future.

This game is THE game for me, I must have 100%-ed it at least 4 times as a child. I yearn for a remake or a new game. Also the US voice acting for Specter is so strange after hearing the superior UK voice. He just doesn't sound as malicious The Specterland theme will live rent free in my head forever

I always found it so cool to see what all the different monkeys were doing in each level. Also the music is some of my favorite, up there with Donkey Kong Country and Spyro on my nostalgia scale

There is something I wanted to touch on about the games that bothered me, its not the gameplay but rather the stories. What do I mean by that? Well I think it was a mistake for the Ape Escape games to follow continuity. When I was little I only played the first game and didn't know that there were sequels to it. So I when discovered there was an Ape Escape 2 I thought it took place in a completely different universe where Spike doesn't exist since Jimmy took his place as the new protagonist, same thing with Ape Escape 3 since it follows a new cast of characters. Only to found out that they took place in the universe and that Jimmy is actually Spike's cousin. Ok...why should we care? The reason why I felt like this was an issue is because Ape Escape is not meant to tell a narative story, since your playing as a different protagonist in each game it would've been more fitting to just have each game take place in there own universes. Cause it just felt stupid for each game to be connected when there was no need for them to be.
