TOOLS...
All tools below are what I prefer to use in my own work. Feel free to use these to jumpstart ideas for you own Celtic art toolkit!
DRAWING PENCILS: A good range in lead weights gives you flexibility. For example, if you find a normal pencil draws too darkly and is a pain to erase, try a 2H or 4H, which will draw a lighter, more "silver" line, as opposed to something softer like a 2B or 4B, etc. Using "artist" quality pencils typically means less lead breakage and less "catching" on the paper. amzn.to/3c8mcC7
ERASERS: I prefer to erase with a white vinyl eraser. It is SO much better than a pink pearl type eraser (just burn that pink eraser, it's garbage! LOL). The white vinyl type is gentle on your paper and erases more cleanly. amzn.to/3c9embj
INK OUTLINING: Consider using a pigmented black ink for fine art as they are considered archival in quality. I love the Staedtler brand for my outlining. I tend to use all the different tip thicknesses - think for main outlines, and then down to the fine for details. amzn.to/3c3W3El
COLOR OUTLINING: Choose finer quality color pens so they are less likely to bleed or fade. Staedtler is again my go-to choice for these. amzn.to/3c9CgTV
COLORED PENCILS: I'm a snob and really love Faber-Castell (although a few shades I have are Derwent). amzn.to/2SVXXj1
That said, for bang-for-buck I have to hand it to Prismacolor. It is still a decent colored pencil and the price can't be beat. amzn.to/2YCy8YF

    Subscribed! After watching David Nicholls tutorials, I’ve been drawing Celtic knots for about 3yrs now. But mostly just to doodle when I’m in a waiting rm or just want to have some quiet meditative time. A Mandala-type circle with rings of Celtic knots, or just a boring old square, is all I do! Happy to come across your channel because now I really want to expand my ability to draw them with more creativity. Thanks for the tutorials! Can’t wait to dive right in!

    I loved your tutorial. I've been doodling knots for years but I am watching everyone of your videos looking for "knowlege nuggets" and drawing along. My bulldog , Dozer, had mixed feelings about your tutorial. He liked the first part just fine but, the over / under part had him speaking his mind, as bulldogs do. Not sure what he was saying exactly. Every time you would say over, bark, under, bark, over, bark. . .i was laughing so hard my line look like they were drawn by a drunk trying to maintain a verticle stool position. So thanks for the knowledge and the giggles you unknowingly gifted me. You made my day.

    Yes illustrator. And then I take those into keynote (Mac version of PowerPoint) and make the animations. Then I put it all together in iMovie, and do the voiceover and add the intro and ending

    I am extremely confused. I was always told a real celtic knot was one line all the way through, not two interwoven with each other, although many interwoven lines are very beautiful. How do I do an intricate pattern that is just one line you can follow all the way through? Is there a special trick that makes sure you don't have two or more different interweaving lines?

    Is it possible to work a Celtic knot and then cut it out with an X-acto knife?

  • @AonCelticArt

    @AonCelticArt

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Mindy, yes you definitely can. How you approach it would depend on your use. So for example, if you wanted to cut the knot out to make a stencil, then you could approach it two ways. The easiest way to envision it would be to think of or make the outlines heavier. So in method one, you’d use the knife to cut on the inside of the outlines. So you’d be removing the centres… in the stencil example, if you stencilled method one, you’d be stencilling color into all the inner fill areas. The outlines would essentially be “gaps” between the fill areas and that would show the design. In method two, you remove or cut away the OUTLINES. So in this way the color you would be stencilled would only show up where the outlines are. The thing you maybe have to tweak if you were to make a stencil is to make sure some of the inner parts have enough connections to each other so it all holds together. Like if you’re making a stencil of a donut, if the inner hole isn’t connected to the outside part then when you cut it out you’d lose all the inner stuff and would be just left with a big empty circle! The best way to see this better would be to Google some stencils and see what they did to them. And if you wanted to cut it out with a knife to make something else… let me know your idea and I’ll try to help. The stencilling info is just me spitballing. Hahaha
