TOOLS...
All tools below are what I prefer to use in my own work. Feel free to use these to jumpstart ideas for you own Celtic art toolkit!
DRAWING PENCILS: A good range in lead weights gives you flexibility. For example, if you find a normal pencil draws too darkly and is a pain to erase, try a 2H or 4H, which will draw a lighter, more "silver" line, as opposed to something softer like a 2B or 4B, etc. Using "artist" quality pencils typically means less lead breakage and less "catching" on the paper. amzn.to/3c8mcC7
ERASERS: I prefer to erase with a white vinyl eraser. It is SO much better than a pink pearl type eraser (just burn that pink eraser, it's garbage! LOL). The white vinyl type is gentle on your paper and erases more cleanly. amzn.to/3c9embj
INK OUTLINING: Consider using a pigmented black ink for fine art as they are considered archival in quality. I love the Staedtler brand for my outlining. I tend to use all the different tip thicknesses - think for main outlines, and then down to the fine for details. amzn.to/3c3W3El
COLOR OUTLINING: Choose finer quality color pens so they are less likely to bleed or fade. Staedtler is again my go-to choice for these. amzn.to/3c9CgTV
COLORED PENCILS: I'm a snob and really love Faber-Castell (although a few shades I have are Derwent). amzn.to/2SVXXj1
That said, for bang-for-buck I have to hand it to Prismacolor. It is still a decent colored pencil and the price can't be beat. amzn.to/2YCy8YF

I've been drawing Celtic knots for 20 years now; I learned through your tutorials on your web site. I'm loving these videos--sometimes seeing it being done makes it even clearer! I do sometimes use a compass for my circles, but I'm getting good at freehanding them (I drew a bunch of marbles last year) so I may well give that part up soon. Looking forward to more, especially people and animals as I keep getting stuck on them no matter how many times I read through the tutorials.

That’s so wonderful to hear Janna! Definitely some animal tutorials in my list, but I have a “treat” announcement that should be ready in the new 2 weeks to share with everyone in the meantime. Stay tuned!

Thanks for the instruction! I really needed to start more simply. Some things were just going over my head. The more I practiced--the worse I got!

Hahaha. It must be like a “two steps forward…”. My problem is I go down the rabbit hole so deep that I go in circles. lol

@@AonCelticArt That's my problem, too! I read into things too much and make it harder than it really is. Of course! That stubborn Irish/Celt blood is running through the veins! Anyway, I'll get there. I use the designs I have learned for leather carving. Some of my pieces are starting to look good. Takes time and practice, practice, practice!

It does but I find once it “clicks” things fall into place quicker than you think. I used to teach a weekend workshop and a week long workshop, and by the end of two days already students had a good leap of progress. And for the week long one the college I taught it would do a mini gallery show for all the courses run and it was crazy to see from day 1 to day 5 to see the change. So it’s totally a practice thing. Fortunately it’s also addictive. So once you pop up for air from the rabbit hole you’ve probably made a ton of knots. Hahaha

Hi there, thank you SO much for the tutorial! Was really perfect for me. Is there some way I could show you my first attempts? I think you would enjoy seeing the results of your teaching. They're just done on A4 copy paper but I used good inks. There are 2 ....so far 😊

Cari, what do you recommend for a good compass or compass set? I like to draw both freehand and with tools, but my compass set is small and kinda kiddie for my big, fat hands.

I have an old Staedtler one, and also one of those drafting circle template sheets where it has many circles all on the plastic sheet. I don’t use tools like that anymore (computer land usually now) but when I used to freehand everything that’s what I used. :) Lemme see if I can find some link examples…

One of the things that was handy about these ones was the top/bottom/left/right ticks around each circle. I found that super handy for noting where I wanted the tails to wind up to etc. Just easier for alignment so it was handy. :)

@@AonCelticArt In my research I found most people agree the Staedtler is the best all-around compass there is. I'll get one. Thanks!
