AOKZOE A1 Pro -- Huge Screen, Massive Power

Ойындар

The new AOKZOE A1 Pro is the first handheld to release with the Ryzen 7 7840U APU, and it packs a winning combo of screen, power, battery, and controls. In this video we'll take a deep dive and see if it's worth the surprisingly-reasonable $799 pre-order price. Oh, and yeah they fixed the d-pad.

    Motion blur testing is a highly important factor when looking at display quality. Adding a quick UFO ghosting test would be greatly appreciated in these reviews, as fast-paced side scrollers can be a blurry, unplayable mess on screens with low pixel response rates.

    Hands down the most detailed and extensive review of the A1 Pro yet - I haven't seen any other reviewers do a deep dive into the dpad (since it was a pain point for the original A1) and overall ergonomics of the device. I'm personally getting the A1 Pro over the Ally - more and faster ram, bigger 8" screen (though the tradeoff is its less bright and 60hz only which is still fine for my use case), much bigger 65wh battery, minimal software bugs as of now (I can't believe this is a plus for Aokzoe...) and decent ergonomics now that the dpad has been fixed. Just praying I don't get a lemon lol.

    Best review on the Aokzoe A1 Pro. I appreciate the attention to max performance. This combined with other sources make me feel comfortable about my purchase. I'm willing to take the risk knowing I may upgrade anyway in 2 years with how fast the market is moving. But from the steam deck to this, it's now worth it to play 1080p to 1200p 30-45fps AAA. I don't expect 1080p 60 medium to high. That's about 1 1/2 to 2 years away.

    I think you really hit the nail on the head with after sales support comments. I think this device would be a better fit for me than the ROG Ally, but it's supposed to be something fun to play games on. If something goes wrong, I don't want to have to stress about getting warranty coverage or support from a company that may or may not do a good job. After all the hubbub over Asus and how they treat customers, I'm guessing they'll be on their best behavior for the immediate future. Without this support consideration, I would have cancelled my Ally preorder and gone with this in a heartbeat. Instead, I'll take the slightly less ideal device with the peace of mind.

    Don't buy it. Stuck with a 60hz display is a disadvantage and a downgrade. You're not gonna get the most out of games with a 60hz. 60hz will come with cheap panel most likely. Literally the SLOWEST response time. Then you're gonna have input lag too. You'll be at a disadvantage if you like shooters. 120hz is a better deal honestly. Plus if you buy this device who knows what kind of guarantee you'll have with that company. ASUS Isn't perfect, but this is being backed by a Kickstarter. At least you could return the ASUS to Best Buy if you don't like it.

    Great review, I think though for handhelds we really shouldn't expect to push 60 in a stable way especially with it only just becoming the standard for normal household console systems. For these devices I think if you're able to clock 30fps and stay there consistently without drops you're pretty much winning. Hopefully competition continues to push these devices though it'll be sweet once we can hit 60fps stable for like 2+hrs of game time at like mid settings.

    Solid handheld for those that want a larger screen. The 65w battery is a major boon as well, giving it much better battery performance than its competitors. Only bummer is that the Lpddr5x is only running at 6400mhz instead of 7500mhz, as an Aokzoe Rep said it was capable of running at 7500mhz (since its the X version of the memory), but there were bugs at that speed.. Edit- Allegedly this might be fixed/updated in future to be able to run at the full 7500mhz, patching up one of the only weaknesses of the Aokzoe A1pro.

    While not being in the market for another high end handheld as I'm happy with my GPD Win 4 and its physical keyboard and mouse sensor thingy, it's a shame that one of the few devices with round D-Pads couldn't have a great one like on Mega Drive controllers (depending on the revision). Was never and will never be a fan of cross style D-Pads. Every time I go back to play on my Mega Drive, the D-Pad (the cross is actually quite pronounced there even though it's round) but also the buttons feel so nice. Also shows how bigger buttons are more comfortable than smaller ones and one of my gripes with the Win 4 besides the location of the D-Pad is, that the buttons are so small that my fingers start hurting after a while, depending on the games I played. The 8bitdo M.30 D-Pad is quite good even if it can't reach the MD pad's. Also the materials / plastics used for the MD controllers are superior (the M.30 sounds a bit hollow).

    Awesome review!!! I cancelled my preorder of the Rog Ally. I have been looking for a handheld that supports USB 4 or thunderbolt 3 because I have a Core X eGPU with 3070, so I really hope that I can use the Rog Ally as my workstation replacement. I need to connect to 3x 5120x1440 monitors so both Steam Deck and Rog Ally ( even with the XG Mobile, it has only two video out ) won’t work for me. I know that you don't like the bottom USB 4.0 port design but the fact that the Steam Deck and Rog Ally both don't use USB 4.0 or thunderbolt forced me not choosing them as my workstation replacement at all. As a game console, both are good but as powerful as it is, it's pretty useless if we can leverage the power of the hardware by limiting the port choice. But this looks perfect. To me, it would be nice if some developers can optimize steam os on this but when I buy this, I’d like to have it 60% for work and 40% for fun, so the hardware specs and windows are quite aligned with what I need. I already contributed and hope that they can deliver in June.

    Amazing video as always! A few quick questions, Russ. 1. When you show the chart of PC games with the battery life per game, are you playing each game that entire time? Or for some (Steamworld Dig 2 for example), do you play a little bit here and there and then leave it idle the rest of the time? 2. What’s the usb dongle? I initially thought it had to be for a keyboard, but then I thought I have seen you use bluetooth keyboards before, which of course would not require a dongle. 3. What was going on in the last few seconds of the video? That looked like absolutely awful D2 gameplay with multiple hitches and even a few long pauses. Was it all server related or did you notice that every time you played that game?

  • @RetroGameCorps

    @RetroGameCorps

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi, here are the answers: 1. For most games I played them straight through, but for others like SteamWorld Dig 2 and Paper Mario I only played them for an hour until I could get a fair assessment of the overall battery draw and then did a computation to figure out the expected battery life for the remaining time. At those low power TDPs it's pretty predictable. For the high-end stuff I play all the way through so I can observe anything funky happening with the power profile as the battery drains. 2. That USB dongle was for a mouse, so I could easily navigate through the emulator menus as I switch between games. If I had more time I would set up an emulation frontend like RetroBat or integrate the games into SteamOS, but I do a lot of testing so it's easier to just zip in and out of the menus. I could definitely have used BT but it's always a pain to pair/unpair all the time :) 3. During that gameplay section yeah I was having connection issues, which is somewhat common here in Hawaii especially at certain times of the day, when everyone on-island is using the Internet. The game generally runs well, especially when I'm not playing at peak hours!
