    If dude welded a piece of stock to the back of the piece you're working you can control it much better! I know it's a big piece of stock but those little calipers he's using are a waste of space!

    Sadly you are mistaken. There is a reason no one in the industry welds handles to their material. You limit the control you have of the work piece when you can only work it from 2 sides. Watch as he breaks down the 6” material. As he’s working it flat he occasionally flips the bar on edge to supply corrective blow. With a welded handle that would be impossible.
