The Idea: "Any Machine, Any Time" refers to the fact that it is always the person behind the gear that make it do what it do. In this episode I take the Roland MV-8800 for a spin!
Sampling Notes: All drums/percussion were sampled into the MV-8800 in mono. Drums are from The Almighty E-A-Ski Drum Kits: e-a-ski.com/store/drum-kits/
Bass line and guitar bits were played and sampled into the MV-8800 in mono as well.
Sound straight out of the MV-8800 stereo outs into my Mackie MS 1202 into my Elektron Analog Heat MKII and lastly into my audio interface and recorded into Reaper.
Post Notes: Some basic EQ and limiting to bring it up in volume. "Dope Beat Dan" audio tag recorded in post.
Thoughts about the MV-8800: Without a doubt the best "production studio" Roland has put out to date. It's a fantastic sounding machine with all the tactile controls you would want at your fingertips. Sampling and editing really becomes second nature once you know your way around the machine. Some of the key features are a mixer section, built in effects, a virtual analog synth and even a “mastering” section. Will Roland ever come out with a true successor that supersedes this monster in sound and capabilities?
