    Anvil opened for AC/DC in 2009 (Magnetic Hill, Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada). Steve was ecstatic to perform for an estimated 90,000 people. He said something like "This is my fuckin' dream come true!" That was the "one & only" time I'd heard of Anvil. Their setlist was gung-ho, but unremarkable.

    I've tried to go through Anvil's catalog and outside of some tracks from the first 3 albums and 1992's Worth the Weight, they're very much meat n' potatoes heavy metal. Respect for dishing out their 20th album though. Takes a lot of heart and dedication to keep pounding that Anvil 😂.

    Funny how you say the drummer Robb missed a transition. I saw Anvil live in 2018 at a bar in my hometown, and they dedicated part of the show to him doing a long drum solo. He absolutely killed it. I wonder what happened here?

  • @thrallsofmetal

    @thrallsofmetal

    23 күн бұрын

    Necrotic Nick- I'm willing to say I think this might have been hurried. The songs didn't feel fully fleshed out at times and there's also the possibility they might have tried to do one takes in the studio to save time and money. Robb might not have got the performance he 100% wanted just due to constraints. I think that's a possibility.

    My issue with these guys is they think they deserved the success of Metallica just because they were there. In their documentary, they blamed everything around them, but never once suggested that they just weren’t as good. “There’s nothing here you haven’t heard played better”. That’s their whole career, and it’s exactly why they didn’t take off. The extremely juvenile subject matter and generic writing didn’t do them any favors either. They just weren’t nearly as good as any of the bands they complained about getting big instead of them.

  • @Gregbaltzer

    @Gregbaltzer

    24 күн бұрын

    The problem is they peaked really early. They should have kept it a 2 guitar band, and the type of metal they played was out of vogue by 1986. By 1986 the popular metal styles were split between the thrash and the glam camps. A lot of the traditional heavy metal acts just weren't what metal fans wanted anymore. Anvil just didn't keep up. It was the same with Venom, by 1986 all the bands they influenced had now progressed past them. Anvil should have recruited a better vocalist, and lyric writer

  • @thrallsofmetal

    @thrallsofmetal

    23 күн бұрын

    Necrotic Nick- As much as I like these guys as people I'd have to agree with them not pointing an inward finger when it came down to why they're not as successful as other bands. Sure, they have their moments but overall it's very basic and, I hate to say it, but the only reason it's memorable is because when it's not generic it's just flat out bad. Even more meat and potatoes bands figure out ways to craft a good hook but when it comes down to that this band hits the mark about as often as a stormtrooper.

    I respect the hell out of this band, and I think they have their audience of people who really don't ask for much from their Rock & Roll. It's the same people who love Chris Holmes and Paul Diano's solo stuff. They just want straight forward, fun, having a beer in the back yard while BBQing R&R/Heavy Metal. I think Anvil embody the true spirit of R&R. Having said all that they are not for me. Great musicians but terrible lyrics, and Lips was never a singer. Still if I had a choice of having a beer with Anvil's crowd, or having a beer with Falling in Reverses crowd, I'd pick Anvil's crowd, and I'd probably have fun listening to them loud after a few beers

    Necrotic Nick- As people, I think these guys are pretty solid dudes and their love of metal is infectious but man was this a chore to get through. I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of their fans especially with the Chris Holmes comparison (sadly, I'd put his solo work on this level as well) and while I love a lot of meat & potatoes acts there's generally something that makes the songs pop. Music like this thrives on big hooks and memorable riffs and this album is lacking in that... or at least good ones because some of these songs are bad enough to be memorable in their own way. I would 100% take Anvil's crowd over Falling in Reverse's. It's not even a close race there.

    I could go on all day about Anvil and how they were never destined to become the next Led Zeppelin as they seemed to have hoped, but the new album saves my breath. As soon as I heard the first single "Feed Your Fantasy," I knew the whole album was gonna be a steaming, nut-filled pile of shit. BTW the main riff from "Truth is Dying" seems to be stolen from "Man on the Silver Mountain" by Rainbow. Yeah pretty much every good riff has probably been done before, but at least try to make it more subtle. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed blatant riff stealing.

    I liked the first three Anvil albums; especially Metal on Metal as well as 2011's Juggernaut of Justice. Everything else Anvil has done has been painfully mediocre and generic. Most of their albums are an absolute struggle to get through and this one is no exception. It was even more bland than 2022's Impact Is Imminent (Exodus already has that title), and almost as bad as 2020's Legal as Last. The music on this album is bland and generic and the lyrics are laughably bad. I haven't heard too many bad albums this year, this year has been a kickass year for metal; but this Anvil album, Static-X, Bruce Dickinson, Kerry King, and Six Feet Under albums are an exception to that.

    Anvil has always been like herpes to me... they suck and never go away. The documentary, however, was amazing, and frankly gave the world a window into guys that you really want to root for. Myself included. I really do love these guys' tenacity, their never die attitude/"metal forever," and their actual respect for the art of heavy metal... but they stink. They have created this niche for themselves, kinda like metal's loveable losers. Every time I hear a review of anything, it's sounds a lot like you guys. You want to like them, but they stink. I think they made a misstep after the documentary. They should have steered into a Spinal Tap kinda of thing focusing more on them, their "metal forever" personalities, and their "never die attitude." They should have made the band more about that. Not that it would have worked (I don't know), but in the modern day of the Internet, social media, and KZread, they may have been able to forge a real strong stretch at the end of their career as this oddly influential old-school metal band that becomes successful because of who they are, rather than their music... but again, if they were able to forge a focus on themselves, then the music would likely be morphed into a kind of "Spinal Tap" thing, becoming more appreciated for how sub-par it is while simultaneously being truly believed in by the band. But, I understand why they wouldn't do this... they have too much respect for the genre of metal to reconstruct themselves this way and turn it into a "joke." However, that may have worked for them because we all understand this isn't a joke to them, no matter what. If Anvil is the greatest at anything, they are the greatest at being true to the metal. So, in conclusion, my thoughts are just what "they could have done" to create a more lucrative career and, if they did it correctly, they would not be seen as a joke, but rather a unique band with this unique journey that, despite their sub-par music, is more metal than any metal band that ever existed. Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk. lol

    Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I gotta give it to them. There's no quit in them... even though there should but I've gotta say, after watching the doc I still kinda root for them. I just wish it wasn't so difficult to do so. While they've had some pretty decent albums in the past I have to agree with you: overall they're just not good. Passion doesn't always translate into talent sadly. They seem like such nice dudes too which makes it harder to shit on their albums but since they don't seem to want to do the Spinal Tap thing this is kinda what we're left with. I feel like this is a long joke at this point and they're the only ones not in on it. I admire them in a way and I do wish them success but I also don't want to mince words here. This album is terrible... but it's Anvil and I'm sure the diehards will love it.

If they were the last band on the planet, and the only way I could listen to new music, I would rather not listen to music. The lyrics are on par with Whitesnake and Winger. The single, "Feed Your Fantasy", has some of the worst lyrics I've heard on a Metal album. Just really, really BAD. They were supposed to be the new wave of British Heavy Metal in Canada???
