    I've been boiling with the lid on without issue. I simply removed the knob from the top of the lid so that there is a vent for the steam, like you would do if using a distilling condenser (like those that Anvil sells), just without the condenser. Definitely get a better boil on 120v this way than with the lid off.

    Good stuff, Brian. As you mentioned grain crush, this is something that I shrugged off in the past, but now know better. One thing I’ve tried recently is to increase grain crush from 0.9 mm-ish to 1.2 mm-ish and remove the grain bag (used a biab almost religiously). I found that I could recirculate much better and the wort was reasonably clear even with 0.8 KG of oats in the grist (making Verdant IPA). The efficiency was on par with previous brews. I like to sparge so the water level isn’t so close to the top and the water/grain ratio is lower. I like to use the Brewinabag brand grain bag to make clean up easier, but it’s a pretty fine mesh at 200 micron (most of my issue). Do yourselves a favor and use a 400 micron mesh size. These are now sold on Anvil’s website, I see. The included cooling coil works, but not so well. I prefer to use a counter flow chiller. This impacts the final boil volume measurement, so don’t forget to accommodate for that. I’ve tried to whirlpool in this, but frankly, the kettle is so narrow I don’t see a benefit. Letting the wort rest for 15-20 after chilling will allow the trub to settle, then draining with the dip tube up will minimize this into your fermenter. Accommodate for this loss in your brew software. Have a great brew day!

I'm shooting on an M6 natively in 4k. The second cam is a M50 mk1 with a ef-m adapter right running a sigma 17-55 which is a really nice lens. Not in wide shot so much like that. What is the height of the system when sparing? I'd like to build an elevated platform for an HLT above the grain basket for this step. I'd probably heat a full volume of water in the Anvil. Then pump it up to a cooler to retain sparge temperature. My other thought was just to use a kettle with an induction heater for sparge water. For a novice which would you suggest?

    This is AWESOME! Thank you. Question (voice of Dwight Shrute): When using 120v, when putting the chiller in the boil to sanitize it drops the temp to 203 every time. Do I need to compensate for the drop in temperature and add more time to the boil while it comes back to 212? Second question is the extension cord FAQ, is that only for 240v users or 120v as well?

  • @ShortCircuitedBrewers

    @ShortCircuitedBrewers

    2 жыл бұрын

    You don't necessarily need to add more time when you put the chiller in. Assuming you put it in the last 10 to 15 minutes of the boil you're not really going to experience much change. As for the extension cord yes it works across both voltages 👍🍻

  • @JohnSchink

    I saw in youTuber Homebeerbrewery video that one way to preheat your immersion chiller is to rest it on the top of your kettle in the steam of your boil. It could help reduce the drop in temp. I haven’t tried this with my Foundry, but perhaps next time I will. 🤓 🍻

    I did my first brew using 120 and the boil was very weak, barely a roll. It didn't burn off nearly enough liquid and I ended up with too much wort and a very low gravity. Maybe I am missing something with the pumps, but this will be my first time using a recirc pump. Do you leave it connected to the kettle during the whole process? how do you remove it without spilling a bunch of wort or is that unavoidable. Seems that if I try to close the ball valve on the kettle, it gets stuck because of the vacuum created.

    Thanks for this video. I brewed a 3 gallon batch in my Anvil 10.5 with the small batch insert. However, my chiller was 90% above my wort, making cooling a challenge. Any tips?

    I am interested in crafting small batches (adjusting malts, hops and yeast) before I brew a 5 gal batch. how well dose the small batch ring work. I would like to hear how well it works in the next Anvil Foundry FAQ Part 2, please and thank you:)

    @@henrybowell1026 The small batch ring worked well. I will let you know how that batch turns out. I went with a 3 gallon batch as a test to confirm I can brew without assistance. It was a successful test. I don't feel comfortable about pulling out the malt pipe alone for a full 5 gallon batch. I need my husband or a friend around for that. I'm sure my technique will improve, but its more fun with a friend anyway.

    Anvil recommends using Bar Keepers Friend. It is inexpensive and leaves your machine bright and shiny without finger prints, but I’m always concerned if my rinsing will get all the product off. Just be cautious there.

    That strainer is not recommend for the foundry. If you want to contain the hops you should use a bag or hanging hop basket. 👍🍻

    I’ve seen David Heath include rice hulls with his hops. He typically uses this in a hop sack - either boiling or dry hopping.

    Can you explain cavitation again and why it's bad?

  • @ShortCircuitedBrewers

    Cavitation basically is when the impeller housing gets air in it and it prevents the pump from pumping. Which of course is not good. 👍🍻
