Korean toners are not for the purpose of cleansing any residual makeup, debris or sunscreen. They are not used like western toners. They are the first step AFTER cleansing, usually to provide hydration, rather than moisturization. This toner, in particular, is supposed to help address skin barrier irritation/ issues. It's meant to calm and soothe the skin as the first step after cleansing is complete. The Korean skincare routines often have double cleanses, before the toner step. In a traditional Korean skincare routine, skin actives in the form of serum(s) would follow the toner/ hydration step; then moisturizers, sunscreens.

Hey 👋 a lot of Korean toners are definitely used a double cleanse that’s why they are so keen on using toner pads more than we do and then toners that are specifically for other benefits. When using a toner after a double cleanse for hydration or else they say it’s “used as a first essence toner”. It is common for brands to specify what steps the toner is intended to be used. For instance this Anua toner does have papaya extract (enzyme exfoliation )as really mild exfoliation it is not just soothing and hydrating. It can be used as a second step cleanse, as a “mask pack” and as a first essence. Since it’s so mild people don’t think of it as exfoliating but in most Korean videos I watched they mentioned how it was an “all in one” toner capable of mild exfoliation. I feel like it’s a misconception that they’re not used for cleansing but it was and still is said by a lot of skincare influencers to explain what korean toners can do to people that are not used to them since western toners were rarely soothing and or hydrating. Korean toners still tend to have a form of surfactants (to cleanse) but it’s really light. Toners are a Big category with a lot of subcategories because they use them for lots of things. That’s why you don’t see that many cleansing water or micellar water there (not talking about the brands that are actively trying to market to the west) That’s why when reviewing toners Korean skinfluencers will talk about their cleansing power, exfoliating power and soothing and or hydrating power. Some toners are only made for hydrating and soothing and can be used as mask pack and first essence (layered or not). Some toners are exfoliating and cleansing therefore used as double cleanse, mask pack on needed area (like the T zone) or first essence depending on how mild they are etc.. Toner pads have more « cleansing power » usually however some are dedicated to soothing and are milder. It’s 5 am right now so it’s a bit hard for me to explain sorry, but for reference you can watch “Director Pi top of top toners of 2023”, “ director pi toner pads top of top 2023” or the year before she explains the purpose of toners and toner pads the philosophy and differences behind it. She’s speaking in Korean but there are subtitles. You’ll see how toners are divided and could be used in a lot of ways. I could link them but don’t want to appear a spam or something. Oh and before I go the biggest example of how cleansing is different there vs to ours is that the Cosrx propolis synergy toner is said to have good cleansing power because of its surfactants. I tested it that way and I approve haha.

@@Crlmd This information is inaccurate. Korean toners are NOT used for any 'second cleanse.' Korean toners are NOT used like western toners. Any 'mild exfoliation' has nothing to do with any cleanse. There are lotions with exfoliants that are also not meant to cleanse anything. The pads some use with Korean toners have Nothing to do with cleansing. They are simply used for easier application of more watery toners. They are also used as make-shift sheet masks to keep the toner next to the skin for more concentrated treatment. They are NOT in pad form for 'cleansing.' The information you are sharing is incorrect. Korean toners are NOT used for any 'second cleanse.' They are used after the skin is completely cleansed and have nothing to do with cleansing. The Cosrx propolis synergy toner is NOT used for cleansing. It is a hydrating toner with actives. Exfoliating does NOT equate to 'cleansing.' Please don't spread misinformation. @@sebrinadickerson3341 please watch the video I reference before being adamant about my points being all inaccurate. It’s really not my goal to misinform anyone. You’re saying « it is NOT used as this » without any reference or proof. The point with some lotions having exfoliants it’s true but doesn’t disprove that enzyme exfoliation in a toner can be put in to have some cleansing proprieties. It’s all about formulation in skincare as we know. Also I talked about « surfactants » mostly for cleansing ability. In the morning it is not unusual for someone to only wipe their face with a toner pad as cleansing step (mostly drier skin people, or could be combination and or sensitive). I also think you didn’t understand the part with toner pads. I may have explain it wrong. I’m talking about another category of products. The ones with multiple cotton pads filled in with toners. On the box of these you usually see different ingredient lists from the original toner. For example the heartleaf toner by Abib and the heartleaf toner pads by the same brand have different ingredients. This toner pads have more surfactants to have more cleansing power than the original toner who’s more fitting to hydrate and soothe. It’s basically two different products. This example is from one of the video I cited before. Please just try to open your view. Just because we disagree doesn’t mean I’m spreading misinformation. You’re talking about their culture like you know it all better while I point to you actual content from professional natives..

My skin usually really likes green tea and centella so I tend to use toners with those ingredients. But this one was so so soothing and hydrating that after one bottle it became my new favorite toner. I was avoiding getting it because of the hype and was certain it will be nothing special, but turns out me and my skin really like it. Maybe it is my slightly oily, breakout prone mature skin that makes it work so well for me? I love Skin 1004 products but the toners... not really my jam, I was also disappointed with soon jung and prefer Cosrx Pure Fit Cica Toner over it. But yeah even if thy are pushy with marketing this product at least seems to be working for me super well. For me this feel it works better with patting it on to my skin but that could also be a personal preference - I tend to like that method with more watery toners more.

I'm using this right now, and I do like it - I layer it 2-3 times and definitely notice the hydrating/plumping effects immediately. In terms of heartleaf though, I feel like for a soothing ingredient, I just prefer cica? At least I've seen more benefits from using the Skin1004 centella ampoule than from the couple of heartleaf products I've tried. That could be just a difference in concentration though (ampoule vs. toner and cream). I do think it's a good option for a safe calming and hydrating toner for all skin types, but like you said, maybe not very exciting. I could see this being one to fall back on if your skin is in an especially irritated state.

I've been really impressed by how *immediately* hydrating and plumping it is and I'd definitely mark it as being one of the very best I've used ( but then I've tried and been very unimpressed by some essences/toners that many people rave about) . For me,compared to the likes of the CosRX peptide and the Neogen, this definitely has a viscosity (it has a 'slip' texture) and *they* are definitely more water-like . The difference is subtle but noticeable...maybe you got a duff batch ☺️ Anyway, might have a look at what else they do in their line .

However, I did only pay 11 quid(UK £) for it(Stylevana flash sale plus discount code) and on UK Amazon it's normal price is around 23£ ,which I think is nudging toward expensive for a toner,so I doubt I'd have even tried it at full price.

You should review numbuzin No. 1 Pure-full Calming Herb Toner! I haven't been able to try it yet, but it has such an intriguing formula: It's 93% soothing/calming extracts, but that 93% is composed of 39.2% centella extract, 28.1% heartleaf extract, and 25.7% licorice extract. Isn't that so unique? I've tried the Anua Heartleaf Toner, but my favorite way so far to get a concentrated hit of soothing is the Skin 1004 Centella Ampoule. I'm really interested in trying this Numbuzin toner, though, and seeing how it compares! Edit: Also, I pronounce Anua the same way you settled on.
