    If any movie could visually describe "war is hell", Antz is one of them. The ants thought they were protecting their colony, but it was all a suicide mission for Mandible's benefit. Likewise, the termites thought they'd get a good snack, but they ended up being massacred as well. Nobody wins.

  • @electricbayonet2

    @electricbayonet2

    Actually, it's worse. The termites were stated as neighbors that didn't have any issue with them, nor had they done anything to the ant colony. Out of nowhere, they had the majority of their neighbor's military moving to destroy them, and they responded in turn. Considering that the objective was 'Overwhelm their defenses and kill their queen,' they absolutely failed. The termites had no reason to be aggressive in the first place (which, btw, brilliant choice of 'termites' as the enemies to goad audience expectations). The grunts were lied to, and the termites just went to ground after the ant expeditionary force was killed.

    I’ve always compared this scene to what happened in Iraq - basically someone high up in the White House (the General Mandible if you like) told George W Bush (in this case the Queen) that the Iraq govt although brutes (like the termites here) were hoarding WMDs and chemical weapons and so George W Bush (again the queen in Antz terminology) signed off on an invasion of the country. The solider Ants aka the American army went in all guns blazing realising there were no WMDs and then had to justify their presence there so killed their queen aka Saddam Hussein (again as much of a brute as he was) but inevitably killed innocent Iraqis as Wikileaks exposed and this turned ordinary Iraqis who otherwise didn’t care about the US or were neutral to attack back in the form of ISIS and other militants in the country in which Iraqis had joined. And look how many innocent Iraqis died as well as Americans deployed under the guise of toppling a government (colony in Antz terms) armed with WMDs and paying with their life

    That's one of the two reasons why I find this movie more interesting. The second reason? The bugs aren't all the same size. Like the Ants are depicted as one of the smallest insects, just like in real life. And with each species of insect we see, they seem much larger and threatening, such as the viscous Termites, to the Loving Bee couple, and that one brief moment Bala sees the Mantis. As short as that scene was, that scared the shit out of me as a kid.

    I remember as a kid trying to process this movie thinking “this…this movie seems ahead of it’s time” and as an adult I feel I was totally right. Someone babysitting me asked me if I wanted to watch “A Bug’s Life” cuz she collected Disney movies and I deadass pulled out the “Antz” vhs tape from my little backpack 😅 In a way I feel like it prepared me for a lot of things in life I didn’t know I’d need at the time. The scene of Z talking to Barbatos’s decapitated head struck me hard but later in life my aunt told me to stay strong at someone’s wedding being the black sheep that I was and a couple months later was decapitated by the cartel in front of her husband. When I think of her, I think about her telling me encouraging words, not what happened to her.

    I bet there were loads of the military ants, listening to Z speaking beneath of the general's speech. Hearing him, totally knowing that he wasn't number 4 of their platoon, knowing that he was some random drone. Standing among the soldiers But they welcomed him. They did not go "General, there's an imposter in our midst we definitely are missing one of our real guys." They let him to come with them because they were such lovely people. Barbatus constantly affirming Z's thoughts and words, never once denying him in a vicious or mean sort of a way. Just correcting him gently, being so polite and kind It makes all their deaths just that much worse, these were good people who did not really hate or want to fight for fighting's sake. They did not deserve to die in the mandibles and the acids spurts of the termites. Z saw how they died horrible deaths in the name of the colony, their beliefs leading them to a miserable end in a foreign land. Far from home, it goes to show that no soldier ever starts off as a real fighter They were all just misled good people. Who welcomed a stranger, who were kind to one who was not one of their own.
