Anton Karas - Der Dritte Mann (The Third Man) Harry Lime Theme (HQ Audio)

Музыка

The original version in the movie was Anton Karas playing solo but this version with additional instruments was released as a single and was the biggest hit on the 1950 Cash Box 100 staying number 1 for 11 weeks. While the original is more haunting and perfect for the movie, this version which I have over-dubbed onto an old video performance has wider appeal while still showcasing Anton Karas' zither genius in both composition and performance.

This spine chilling music captivated me as a ~12 year old but only because the book was read to me in a Grammar school English lessons by a delightful and cultivated English teacher. I don't recall first hearing but the film did from first view and 50+ years later has never left me. Anton Karas devises the perfect score for the best film ever made and no coincidence it was Carol Reed, Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles that made an indelible impression on me which remains today - Ponto, Weintraub, et al gave such superb performances, all from the canon of German Impressionist film making. Geniuses at work and what corridors in my mind they directed me to......still walking through door after door.

Thousand thanks for such a nice comment. At least I am not the only one who feels that way. I am born in Vienna and lived there to my middle 20's! Thanks again. The bridge you see there in the movie is not there anymore (Reichsbruecke) I believe it collapsed on a Summer Sunday early morning with only 1 car on it. A few hours later, there would have been many more casualties (thousends) because everyone wanted to go to the 'Gaensehaufl' a bad at the old Danube or just to the old Danube swimming.

The original critics in 1949)50. To them " USING A PRIMITIV FOLK INSTRUMENT ONLY USED BY FARMERS AND SIMPLE MINDED COUNTRY FOLK DOES NOT BELONG INTO AN ENTERTAINMENT MOVIE"" Back in those days that statement was readable in a lot of magazines and newspaper articles world wide. Indeed, it had been the first time in movie history that a major movie tune had been carried by a Folk Art Instrument just used for traditional local songs. So the ZITTER in here was greundbraking. But the movie did also CULTURE HISTORY in FASHION. The duffle coat TREVOR HOWERD sported as the leading Military Police Officer became a STANDARD ITEM since then. Personaly I have loved those coats very much.

@@rogerlynch5279 Who cares about primitive folk instruments? The tune is still haunting no matter what it is played with.

Beautiful song! The mystique of the melody line will forever warm my heart and hopefully yours as well! 😊😊

I agree beautiful music, but I also liked seeing a little bit what the War did, do a beautiful city! Hopefully we never have War again. Actually we saw only a little bit of destruction. I remember going up a circular staircase where partly half of the staircase was blown away (the inner part of staircase) through a bomb of whatever! No railing just on one side the wall, where you could put your hand there while climbing at 3 or 4 floor, don't remember anymore, how many floors! Some of the stairs had a big gap so you really had to be close to the wall, eerie!

Ce thème trouble et entêtant est un coup de génie. Indissociable de la Vienne d’après guerre que ce film évoque si bien Bravo Karras.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written. I read that the Pope requested he come to the Vatican and play this for him, and he did.
