This is how Bluebird PdD should be done. At high speed and with the second side and 2x number of six at the end of the men's variation. Fabulous.

Never been danced better-wonderful. Sibley is a marvelous dancer has speed, attack and yet a wonderful lyrical quality similar to Fonteyn. Deserved far more recognition for her qualities. Gradually getting around to all your uploads!!!

sedekiman r yes Sibley deserved more recognition - i think Fonteyn for a long time and unfortunately over-shadowed many of the ballerinas at the RB - she had Juliet over Lynn Seymour on whom the role on 'R and J' was choreographed by MacMillan - the box office talking sadly Sibley was doing Auroras by the time i started ballet-going as a kid - so it was great to see her here as Princess Florine and the different dance qualities she brings here.

Yes you are right Fonteyn did over shadow the younger dancers. Note the body on Sibley-no dancing stick here!

sedekiman r absolutely - Sibley has a beautiful full body, as in fact Margot did - the image of the stick figure (of today) can get in the way of the performance for a viewer, like with Galina Mezentseva.

although dancers today are so tech perfect, i love the speed of this performance, she is wonderful such lovley arms and they both look like they are enjoying it as it should be portrayed and looks far more natrural.

Ahhhh!!!!! Blissful musical conversation between a bird and a sassy princess who clearly feeds him from the palm of her hand. It's BRIT Perfect with the right tempii. Gorgeous. Also Alfreda Thoroghgood was terrific!!! Remember her Nick?

hey Danny! love it too - so right in approach, as you say i was lucky to see Alfreda Thoroghgood as Odette/Odile - unexpected perfection, particularly the white act - one of the most satisfying performances of this role i've ever seen - it reminded me of Margot but stood alone and was not a copy such a pity there seems to be nothing of her on film :(

Just gorgeous! From the moment of their entrance I had chills up my spine. I wish I could pinpoint what exactly it is that makes 20th century dancers so much more exciting to me than dancers of today (and why!!). There are, of course, many good dancers these days, but somehow I don't love them as I love the dancers of the past. They always say that technique is so much better today, but is it really? Somehow it seems flatter to me and less spiritual, almost. In any case, a wonderful upload from a wonderful channel. Thank you!

+Neo Meemoo from a totally different point of view, Vasiliev and Maximova when interviewed once said that what was missing today was the focus on understanding the meaning of a ballet and finding ways to express it - rather than just higher extensions, greater jumps and so on. i think this is part of it, don't you?

You put it so well. I have been feeling the same. More magic for me back then. As a child (I'm 80) I was taken to see Sadler's Wells company perform in Los Angeles. I studied ballet from 3 and a half to 21....and taught it. Happy memories.

Despite being from another generation, after watching Sibley and Shaw dance this variation it makes all the other versions of today seem slow and dowdy in comparison. Is there a particular reason why the variations tend to be aeons slower than this one?

+Eddy Liu apart from everything else i think it's the fact that Sibley lives Princess Florine or creates her character through the phrasing of the chore - rather than just execute the steps. her performance is modulated in the phrasing and very musical - i hear things in the music through watching her move.

+John Hall Thanks for that! There is so much more emotion and musicality to Sibley's dancing. She is one of my favourite dancers! I like her more than Fonteyn which is a bit rare because Fonteyn usually gets all the plaudits. Have you seen her brief clip with Dowell in Thais? It's sublime. There is also one where they were rehearsing The Dream with Ashton. They don't make dancers like her anymore. It's all technique technique now

+Eddy Liu i totally agree with your assessment of Antoinette Sibley - and found her supremely satisfying on stage - her Auroras held you spell-bound by her wonderful musicality which is what for me it's all about - technique is to serve musical expression not an end in itself. i lobe the 'Thais' footage and uploaded it as 'Frederick Ashton Rehearses Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell in ‘Meditation from Thaïs’ (1971)' cheers!

While having to agree with the comments of the staging and rigidity of the shoes I thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse of the Pas de Deux and Yes Princess Florine is not a bird -She is being taught to fly as someone mentions -It annoys me when in a lot of productions they are just called the "Bluebirds" totally incorrect!!!

hi yes, Florine was a princess - and the blue bird a prince before being transformed by Mazilla: "After a wealthy king loses his dear wife, he meets and falls in love with a woman, who is also recently widowed and they marry. The king has a daughter named Florine and the queen also has a daughter named Truitonne. While Florine is beautiful and kind-hearted, Truitonne is spoiled, selfish and ugly and it is not too long before she and her mother become jealous of Florine's beauty. One day, the king decides the time has come to arrange his daughters' marriages and soon, Prince Charming visits the kingdom. The queen is determined for him to marry Truitonne, so she dresses her daughter in all her finery for the reception and bribes Florine's ladies-in-waiting to steal all her dresses and jewels. But her plan backfires for when the Prince claps eyes on Florine, he falls in love with her at once and pays attention only to her. The queen and Truitonne are so furious that they badger the king until he agrees to lock Florine up for the length of the visit and they attempt to blacken her character to the Prince. The queen sends Prince Charming many gifts, but when he hears they are from Truitonne, he rejects them. The queen angrily tells him that Florine will be locked in a tower until he leaves. Prince Charming is outraged and begs to speak with Florine for a moment. The devious queen agrees, but secretly arranges for Truitonne to meet the Prince instead. In the darkness of their meeting place, Prince Charming mistakes Truitonne for Florine and unwittingly asks for the princess's hand in marriage. Truitonne conspires with her fairy godmother, Mazilla, but Mazilla tells her it will be difficult to deceive the Prince. At the wedding ceremony, Truitonne produces the Prince's ring and pleads her case. When Prince Charming realises he has been tricked, he refuses to marry her and nothing that Truitonne or Mazilla do can persuade him. At last, Mazilla threatens to curse him for breaking his promise and when Prince Charming will still not agree, Mazilla transforms him into a blue bird." cheers
