A close look at an Eldridge Two Spool sewing machine by the National Sewing Machine Company. Please note, I misspelled the name Eldridge. It's supposed to be Eldredge.

    Hi, Joyce! Thank you for writing! As good an idea as the two spool sounds, after sewing with it several times my wife says it's hard to get the tension adjusted to make a good stitch. Dragging enough thread out to go around the lower spool, easily 5 times as much in a machine with a bobbin, makes it tricky to get working consistently. For myself, I think this Davis vertical feed is a much better machine: kzread.info/dash/bejne/epaWltqYkZyodKg.html Thanks again for commenting!

    Thank you for posting. I have my grandmother's machine and looked all over the internet to see if I could identify the model. Turns out, I have a "Maisie Mae," TOO! The plate under the foot lists a number of patents pending with dates from 1911-1913. When you pulled out the box of attachments, I yelled to my husband, "Now I know what that box is!" It wasn't with the machine but in a separate box of my mom's stuff. What you can't capture is the smell of the machine, which once I opened it, took me right back to my grandmother. THANKS for the lesson and the trip down memory lane.

    Did you know that a Singer Industrial Class 7 bobbin exactly fits my National Two Spool machine with can style #3? The spindle of the bobbin is so much slimmer than a small thread spool that i can wind 1 large spool of thread on it. Sews perfectly for a very long way between bobbin changes😊

    I got a set of 3 bobbins like you suggested today, wound one with thread and it worked perfectly on the machine! Thank you again! Besides holding more thread than one of the small wood spools, it felt like the machine ran a little smoother with the metal bobbin. This makes sense because being metal, its surfaces are smoother.

    This is a really neat machine. I wonder why the two-spool design didn't catch on with other manufacturers. I'd love to not have to worry about my bobbin running out multiple times over the course of a project.

    Hi again! The two-spool concept failed because it could only hold one size of spool whereas there were many different spool types in use. While I haven't seen any tension problems with ours, I've read that maintaining good tension was a problem.

    I'm very sorry, but no. These are one of the hardest-to-find sewing machine accessories. About your only hope is to keep searching the Internet for one, but the odds of finding one for sale is effectively zero. About the only way to get one is to find another two-spool for sale and purchase the entire machine. Even that might not work because there were a couple of different cans made to fit slightly different machines and the one you get might not fit yours. I'm sorry I can't help.

    I got two, 3-inch long by 1/4-inch diameter springs from a hardware store and connected their ends together to form a loop. They worked great as a belt to drive the machine. They were a little tight, which made the motor labor, so I stretched one out to make it half an inch longer and that solved the problem. For winding their bobbin, I slip the spring belt off the machine pulley and onto the bobbin winder pulley. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions. Thanks for commenting!

    Hi, Tara! Thanks for writing! I would think yours is earlier. I believe these machines first came out in 1913 and ended in 1930, so ours would be at the very end of the production. Let me do a little more research and I'll let you know if we can narrow down a date for yours. Do you know it's serial number? I checked out your channel and I have to ask: "What does OREEP stand for?"

    The following article provides some information on dating 2 spools as being early, middle or late by the shape of the canister and other details: 2spools.blogspot.com Because Eldredge machines were made by the National Sewing Machine Company, for which there are no serial number records, dating 2 spools accurately is impossible. But we can make an educated guess. We were told ours dates to 1929 and has the serial number H56,769. The pattern of other 2 spool serial numbers suggest they are sequential starting from 0. If that's the case, and we assume since they were made from 1913 to 1930 (17 years) and that production rates were fairly constant over those years (which is almost certainly wrong but we're just working up an estimate) and finally that the highest serial number is around 60,000, then: H00000-H03500 = 1913 H03501-H07000 = 1914 H07001-H10500 = 1915 H10501-H14000 = 1916 ...and so on, adding one year for every additional 3500 increase in the serial number. This is extremely approximate, but at least it's a start. I hope this helps.

    I'd be happy to help! First up, is your Eldridge a two-spool? If so, the following video will show how to thread it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/X5aMk6uKfqu8f8Y.html There's also an Eldridge which isn't a two-spool. Instead, it's a conventional vibrating-shuttle machine, which means the shuttle moves in an arc. Which do you have?

    @@HaylieUrias It sounds like you have a machine intended to be used on a foot-powered treadle, which is very common in vintage machines. Your mentioning that your spool is long a skinny means the machine is a vibrating shuttle machine rather than a two spool. If you slide out the metal plates in front of and behind the needle then turn the main wheel, you should see the end of a metal arm swinging back and forth in an arc under the bed of the machine. You can see what this looks like 5:30 minutes into the video I sent you. Is this what yours looks like? Also, please look at the side of the upper arm of the machine. Does it have the word "Eldridge" on it in cursive? Again, you can see what I mean in the second half of the video I sent. If so, then we have the same machine! It's an Improved Eldredge IEB.

    Here's a little history about the company that made your machine: The Eldridge Sewing machine Company was formed in 1869 in Chicago. In 1890 it merged with the June Sewing Machine Company to become the National Sewing Machine Company, one of the great sewing machine power houses from 1890 up the WWII. National continued selling machines with the Eldridge name because it was a well established and respected trademark. National ended in 1953 because it couldn't compete against cheap Japanese imports.

    Thank you the break button it said it’s supposed to stop the needle from going up and down I couldn’t find it? But now I can’t figure out how to get the machine to make the thread go through! You should make a tutorial for old machines

  • @wayneschmidt490

    @wayneschmidt490

    I have over 60 machines in our antique and vintage sewing machine collection, everything from 1861 to 1968. In all of them I've never come across break that stops the needle from going up and down. Friction automatically stops sewing machines whenever the user stops pedaling or cranking or in electrics, releases the foot petal. Could you be thinking of something that disengages the sewing part of the machine from the main wheel so that a bobbin, or in the case of the 2-spool, a spool, can be wound without driving the rest of the machine? If so, the answer is to look at the end of the main wheel. There is a knurled, steel disk in the center of it. Twisting that so the top moves towards you releases the machine from the drive. The pully should now to free to rotate without driving the rest of the machine. But, internal drag usually makes the machine move a little if the pulley rotates. For electric 2-spools, the drive spring that links the motor to the pulley needs to be removed and placed around the bobbin winder pulley to drive it. If your machine is set up on a treadle for foot powered use, the bobbin winder should be able to be rotated into position to be driven by the leather belt that drives machines mounted on treadle bases. Sorry to throw another question at you, but I don't understand what you meant when you said you couldn't figure out how to get the thread to go through. Did you mean how to get the thread to go through the needle? It threads from right to left. Sewing machines vary too much to put together a comprehensive video for all of them. Usually I include usage guides with my videos of individual machines, such as the following: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6alvNuphrrLcrg.htmlI forgot to do so with the Eldridge. If you search KZread for National Two Spool Sewing Machines, you should be able to find someone who's made a video about how to get yours working. Here's one: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZmDj6SAZtvVf7g.html Also, searching Google for Eldridge Two Spool Sewing Machine Manuals will turn up sources for complete manuals. Many times these are free. Good luck!

    These are rare enough that there is no consistent price for them. We got ours in a nice cabinet for $180 many years ago. But, I've seen them advertised for several times that amount. They often sell for much less. A treadle in a good cabinet might fetch $300 today. The machine head alone might only bring $200 or less.

    The bobbin set up is so seemingly smart! Are there no other machines with a spool sized bobbin setup? If not there should be.todays machines are so sadly lacking in character color and materials

  • @wayneschmidt490

    @wayneschmidt490

    As I've used the machine more, I've discovered that as the bottom spool runs out, the machine's tension has to be constantly adjusted. In a normal spool, the change in drag from thread coming off the bobbin doesn't change much as thread nis used up. But when an entire spool of thread is used, it does. I think this is why the concept never caught on. I agree with you that modern machines don't have the styling of antiques.
