    Exactly the video I needed. I've just bought an 1894 Singer in a dreadful state and am going to renovate it myself. The decals are very bad , so I thought it was worth my time to repaint them myself but wasn't exactly sure what to use. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction and giving me the confidence to go forward with the renovation of my own machine.

    Since posting this video, I've tested two dozen more paints and found Design master 14KT Gold spray paint (#230) is a closer color match and has more shine to it than the Decocolor pen.

    And is that before or after adding shellac? Shellac can be amber color, but it can also be sold clear. Do you think the difference is noticeable? Great vid thanks for sharing

    @@victoriango9443 thank you for commenting! I use clear shellac, which doesn't change the color. But shellac, as well as any clear coat, will dull the luster of any metallic paint. It has to do with a metal flakes used in such paints being lifted so they no longer lay flat providing a metallic reflectivity. Model builders has lamented this for years and have yet to find a solution. An enamel metallic wouldn't require clear coating for protection, but none that I've tried is the right color. For small touch-ups, the slight mismatch in luster isn't noticeable without close-up glasses. If you like antique sewing machines, I'm just finishing up an 1869 Grover & Baker that is destined to be the pride of our collection. The video should be up and a week or two. I hope you enjoy it.

    Danger I used this shellac and methylated sprits which is great but one of the ""brushes used a glue to hold the bristles in the metal ferrule"" after a about 10min the glue leached out and made the shellac opaque / milky, and as you say after a bit of time and meths I cleaned it off. Now I test the day before and leave brushes soaking to see if they are safe. I only paint of shellac if the transfers / decorative gold transfers are exposed. Most of my machines are just made to work and use. What you do is fantastic. I liked your tips, many thanks.

    I have found the safest degreaser to be warm water with dish soap in it. Dip a cloth into it and rub on the surface. Start in the rear right corner, which is the most hidden, and see how much pressure and rubbing is safe to use. I used to use 409 cleaner/degreaser, but found it was a little too aggressive and could, in some cases, attack the artwork. I sometimes use it in tough areas coated with dried oil that don't come up with soapy water. Once the machine is clean, I recommend going over it with a towel dampened with clear water to remove any soap residue. I hope this helps/ Good luck with your restoration!

  • @wayneschmidt490

    @wayneschmidt490

    I've clear coated it with shellac with good success but found that it has to be applied in a single light stroke. Shellac does soften the pen ink a little and repeated brushings will tend to smear it. I've stopped using shellac because it's so difficult to use and get a good finish. French polishing isn't as easy as it looks. Instead, I've switched to using Design Master Clear Finish Gloss #168 spray. It's available from Amazon. Small areas can be done by spraying a little into a disposable cup and brushing it on. This clear coat is easy to use, dries quickly (though a two-day cure is best before hard handling) can be recoated almost anytime, resists runs and so far hasn't attacked any decals of paints I've used. I've also stopped using the paint pen. After testing many real paints, I found Design Master Premium Metals 14KT Gold spray to be more durable and a closer color match than the pen. It isn't an enamel, so it still needs to be clear coated but the results are much better than the pen. Thanks for commenting! I'm just finishing up my most recent restoration: an 1872 Franklin Agenoria. I hope you'll check it out. It should be uploaded within the next few days.

    @@wayneschmidt490 Thank you so much for this video! Just inherited a 201-2 and am doing a complete rewire. I used sewing machine oil to clean the machine and the next day most of the machine was quite cloudy. The Shellac seems to have been completely crackled and crazed and I was able to scratch it off with my thumbnail. I have about half of the shellac off, and the japaning and decals are in pretty good shape. I really wanted something more durable than shellac as a final finish and you are the first restorer admitting to using a contemporary clear coat. I'm also considering an oil based polyurethane as Alex Askeroff uses this to "seal" severely crazed/chipped machines to prevent further rusting. My Bradbury also the same type of machine as yours has soft rubber pads under the back hinges ? I do wonder if this was a problem. In the past my machine must have been dropped since the top decorative parts on the presser boot and needle bar have snapped off. The locking mechanism was very poor and would release if you lifted the machine (I never trust the case handles I always wrap a strap around the full machine) I will be making steel flat shapes and masonry nails with JB weld or epoxy (I am in the UK) they will be under the bed out of sight.

    That happened with our Crown sewing machine! It was on a high shelf and my wife tried getting it down rather than asking her manly husband for help. :-) It was too heavy and she dropped it and the base broke in half. The JB weld and steel plates on the underside fixed the machine perfectly. The trick to filling and hiding all traces of the crack once it's back together is to use a sanding primer and filler then wet sand with a sanding block. I'm sorry to read about your machine breaking, but at least it can be fixed. Good luck!

    @@someoneorsomething7591 What's happened is that over years of use, the protective layer of shellac has worn away, exposing the original artwork, which then also starts to wear away. The top layers of color go first, exposing the underlaying layer of silver paint, which was used to give the color layers some shine. Originally, all the artwork was applied using a lithographed transfer technique, which is like a decal except that only the paint is transferred. There is no clear plastic base layer that holds everything together. I've developed an inkjet printing technique that works for all-gold decals kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIR_z82Rh9e3nbw.html and am working on a technique for colored decals, but am not far enough along in perfecting the latter to publish a video about it. If you want to preserve what you have, a light coat of gloss clear spray paint will work well. It's important to make sure any oil or wax has been cleaned off before spraying. I've gotten very good results with Design Master Clear Finish Gloss #168, which you can get from Amazon.
