You can still buy parts for these lanterns today! They are popular among the Amish and more conservative Mennonites, and stores such as Lehman’s sell them both in-store and online! Although the Dietz company itself closed in 1992, they set the tone for lantern design that is still being followed today, and you can find their lanterns in working condition just about anywhere if you know what to look for!

That beautiful piece! I love lanterns. That’s a great piece for you to have and use from your father. I want to get a bunch of them and hang them around my outside patio. Are you going to repaint it to protect the metal, or just leave it as is and keep it inside? Enjoy it, I’m sure it will make you smile every time you look at it.

Hi Lyndsay, I love the lantern! You did a great job cleaning it, but I'd be worried about adding to corrosion if I used the soda/vinegar mix on rusted metal. My choice would be WD-40, it removes the rust without doing additional damage. If you wish to protect it against further corrosion, you might want to wipe it with oil.

Pull up on the wire tab on top of the lantern, then rotate the glass downward to remove 😁
