Antique chair RESTORATION - ANTIQUE Bobbin Chair
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I will be restoring a Genuine Antique Bobbin chair from the 19th Century. I'll be trying some new restoration techniques that I've never done before and showing you some mistakes i made along the way. This restoration challenged my patience a number of times but i love the final results and I hope you do too.

Hi David, here is a tip for you regarding horsehair: make yourself a couple of hand carding tools like the ones used for wool. Make them the shape - but a bit larger- than your webbing stretcher and fix the nails so it looks like two hair brushes. It won't be the last time you have to reuse old horsehair, and next time it will take you a lot shorter time to loosen the stuffing after washing it. Oh, and one more thing; in order to keep a happy marriage, if you keep washing 150 year old horse hair in the washing machine you might want to clean out the little sive at the bottom of the machine once in a while (at least, we have that solution on the washing machines here in Norway) so that your wife does'nt go totally librarian on you, as Sir Terry Pratchett would have said! :) Brilliant result as always by the way! xxx to you both and Daisy from Mette in Kongsberg, Norway:)

Hi Mette. You know what, after I separated the horsehair by hand I stood there and thought I should have made something to make that easier! Thanks so much for the tip on carding tools, I’ll have a look and make some 😀👍 I’ll double check the washing machine filter too before Emma dies 🤣🤣🤣❤️

Once more you prove your worth as a skilful craftsman with true artistic flair. Much as I respect your idea of keeping the horsehair, I would NOT have allowed it in my washing machine. Respect to you wife for allowing that. Every time that I see gorgeous, happy, lively Daisy, my face breaks into a big smile. Wish she was mine.

Hi Pamela. My wife wasn’t ecstatic with me using the washer but she’s a love and agreed. Thanks so much for your lovely comments about Daisy, she’s a little gem 😀😀
Outstanding job. Love how the caning turned out --- no one would ever know it had been repaired!
If you're going to repair and renovate old furniture BIG TIP nails and screws that have been in the wood a long time form a bond. To remove them EASY place an electric soldering iron on the head it expands them and breaks the bond. When they cool its really easy to pull nails or unscrew screws NICE VID

You’ve done an amazing job and it’s now a beautiful chair. Bonus points for your patience and skill on the reeding and also for dealing with that terrible horsehair! You pulled out all the stops on this transformation, and it shows. I had to grit my teeth watching you re-weave the rattan caning; it looked like trying to remedy ancient embroidery with new stitches. Again, your attention to detail made the day. (I made all most of my own clothes for almost 30 years, so I know about detail and dexterity.) The fabric choice is perfect for the style of the chair and footstool - it's just lovely. And thank you, of course, for our "Dose of Daisy." She's a charmer with her floppy, curly ears. I'm glad that you're seeing increased interest in your channel after the dueling projects with Jay. You'll hit 20,000 in no time. Thanks for the visit to your shop. Cheers from Oklahoma!!!

Beautiful chair. Your fabric choice is exquisite. ♥️ I went down a rabbit hole with the initials of JF and I think I have a lead for you (or not). Anyway, I found the name JF Johnson who designed furniture for the London manufacturer, Heal & Sons. There is a chair in the Victoria and Albert Museum with a similar cane back - exposed tacks around it (It’s not a bobbin chair). I could be way off but since my background is in research this was fun.

That cane woven repairs was so worth the time and sanity to do. My grandpa didn’t manage to teach me how to do that in his time. He did manage to teach me the basics in upholstery and if I were you I wouldn’t worry about tack holes. Some chairs I’ve seen are nearly sieves. The other handy skill my grandpa taught me was French polishing. I have done a burr walnut veneered small table and when finished it looked as if there was a sheet of glass on it. I was so happy with it. It looked beautiful Keep up with your hard work as I find your channel probably the best on here.

I love hearing about the things your Grandpa taught you. Grandads are the best!!! I’ve tried “proper” French polishing on another piece and I was rubbish at it but I know with practice I’d get better. Although my grandad was a true inspiration to me he never actually taught me any specific skills, I’ve never had any formal training in what I do, I just have a go at pretty much anything and try to get better as I go. Thanks for your kind comments about my work. 😀❤️

Thanks Julie 😀
This was the first video of yours that I watched before. I loved it so much I had to watch it again. That weaving and upholstery looks fantastic! Great job :-). Oh, and I hope you kept that tapestry from foot stool and framed it.
