The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

I participated in that one. The fight in the Cornfield was probably the greatest moment in my 30+ years of reenacting. My unit portrayed the Texas Brigade for that scenario. I'm pretty sure we all died that morning.

Many people when thinking about America's bloodiest battels/wars, they immediately say WW2! Or, Vietnam! Little do they know about the American Civil war, and the men who sacrificed their lives for us on the battlefield of Antietam.

recently the re-enacted Rebel Yell at these events is getting closer and closer to how it was in reality, I think - less the blood thirst / fear / hate / desperation of the original - but still impressive, thanks

I was in reenacting for 15+ years, this brought chills watching this, thoroughly enjoyed this, it is hard to comprehend in this day and age the thousands of brave men "North and South" that fought and especially for those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms of our great country. I am afraid we view our countries history the same as many view a football game, it is easy to set back and critize the quarterback, and coach, on Monday morning after the ballgame

(Battle Of Sharpsburg/Antietam.) "Battle oh horrid battle. What sights I have seen now see around me. I am Wounded! And am afraid shall be again as shells fly past me every few seconds carrying away limbs from trees and scattering limbs around. Am in severe pain. Furies how the shells fly. I do sincerely hope shall not be wounded again. We drove them first till they got sheltered then we had a bad place. Oh I cannot write." Sgt. Jonathan Stowe, 15th Massachusetts Infantry, 2nd Corps. Diary entry, Sept. 17, 1862, CWTI Collection, USAMHI ***(Stained with his blood)*** He later died of his wound._______ "I had just got myself pretty comfortable when a bomb burst over me and completely deafened me. I felt a blow on my right shoulder and my jacket was covered with white stuff. I felt mechanically whether I still had my arm and thank God it was still whole. At the same time I felt something damp on my face; I wiped it off. It was bloody. **Now I first saw that the man next to me, Kessler, lacked the upper part of his head, and almost all his brains had gone into the face of the man next to him, Merkel, so that he could scarcely see.** Since any moment the same could happen to anyone, no one thought much about it." -Christopher Niederer, 20th New York Infantry Regiment, 6th Corps. Civil War Misc. Collection, USAMHI Lest we forget.
